RALEIGH, N.C. – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has reassigned left wing Damian Surma and left wing Tomas Kurka to Lowell of the American Hockey League.
Surma (5’ 10’’, 200 lbs.) made his NHL debut on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators, notching his first NHL goal. He was selected by Carolina in the sixth round, 174th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. The Lincoln Park, Mich., native is in his first full professional season after making his professional debut with Lowell at the conclusion of the 2001-02 campaign, playing in one regular-season game and four playoff games. Surma, 22, has 20 points (9g, 11a) in 64 games with Lowell this season. In four seasons with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Surma tallied 225 points (105g, 120a) and 306 penalty minutes in 241 games.
Kurka scored his second goal of the season for Carolina on Tuesday night and has three points (2g, 1a) in eight games with the Hurricanes. He scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game, Feb. 26 at Phoenix. Kurka (5’ 11”, 190 lbs.) was selected by Carolina in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. In 58 games with Lowell this season, Kurka, 21, has 16 goals and 11 assists (27 points) and ranks tied for fifth on the team in scoring. A native of Most, Czech Republic, Kurka turned professional last season and had 13 goals and 15 assists (28 points) in 71 regular-season games with Lowell. He played two seasons with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League prior to turning professional and totaled 108 points (51 goals, 57 assists) in 111 regular-season games.
The Hurricanes travel to Montreal to take on the Canadiens on Saturday night (7 p.m., Fox Sports Net). Carolina’s next home game is against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, March 25 at 7 p.m. at the RBC Center. Tickets for that game and all Hurricanes games are available via the team’s official website, CarolinaHurricanes.com, the Dodge Box Office at RBC Center or by calling 919-834-4000

Does this mean that some of the walking wounded are ready to return or does lowell not have enough bodies for their next game and he sent them down to compete for Lowell ans will bring them back before the Montrwal game?

They certainly have time - they could meet the team in Montreal on Saturday morning/afternoon.
Guess it depends on who is walking and who is still wounded come Saturday.

As much as he has flown, i wouldn't be surprised if he trades his miles in for a free plane ticket home in the off-season.

Well, I read somewhere Hlavac would be out for two weeks due to his broken fingers. Two weeks or so have now elapsed, so maybe he's coming back.
DeFauw's elbow might have healed enough to allow him to take the ice as well.

Yeah, would they reassign him if he was injured? Or could they? Hereema went on IR but never was reassigned. Somebody must know the protocol about that....
