COLUMBUS, Ohio (CP) - The 2007 NHL draft will be hosted by the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena, the team and league announced Tuesday.

The draft will be held Sat., June 23, 2007.
''The Blue Jackets are extremely proud and honoured to be selected to host the 2007 (draft),'' Jackets president and general manager Doug MacLean said in a release. ''To have the draft held here is a testament to the tremendous support of our fans, who have proven without a shadow of a doubt that Columbus is becoming one of the premier hockey cities in the world.''

The Columbus Blue Jackets entered the NHL in 2000.

The city has hosted a number of hockey events since then, including women's Olympic tuneup games in 2005 and Team USA's training camp for the World Cup of Hockey in 2004.

''The (draft) is one of the most important events on our calendar, as it marks the culmination of one season and casts all eyes toward the bright future that awaits,'' said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. ''We are extremely pleased the Blue Jackets have created the opportunity to share all the excitement with their fans.''

The 2006 draft will be held in Vancouver.

Ok, I'm like a real big Draft nerd- hub and I have committed to going to the Draft until we've hit them all- and I can't contain my excitement over this announcement! Columbus is an awesome hockey city, having experienced it for Team USA's weeklong World Cup of Hockey training camp 2 years ago, I have vowed to return when we play the Blue Jackets or 'sooner'.

The Arena District is by far one of the best areas in all the hockey cities we've visited on roadies, and Columbus really does stuff first class, so congrats to them. It may seem like a long way off, but if you want a fun hockey vacation, I highly recommend Columbus, and with all the wheeling and dealing that goes on during draft weekend, it's a blast to just people watch and 'wonder' what a GM is up to and what those two GM's are talking about I'll never forget seeing JR on the streets of Nashville -smiling broadly and both thumbs up when we waved at him and Mo that day we drafted Staal or Keenan on his cellphone outside a restaurant looking very animated the night before the draft..... lol...

They'll have their hands full in CLB, duplicating the Canes efforts in 2004 ;) !
