Hasek investigated for stick attack

Canadian Press

5/20/2003

TORONTO (CP) - Czech police are investigating former NHL goaltender Dominik Hasek over a stick attack during an in-line hockey game that left another player in a neurosurgical ward with a broken nose and a bruised neck.

"I have never seen such an unbelievable, short-circuited behaviour in my 15-year career," Tomas Wuertherle, the game's referee told the CTK news agency.

The attack allegedly happened on Sunday in Pardubice, according to Czech press reports.

Hasek was playing as a skater for Bonfire Stirda when he and an opposing player, Martin Sila, collided. No penalty was called.

Wuertherle alleged Hasek knocked the player down with a crosscheck to the back, sat on him and hit him in the neck several times with his stick.

The referee said Hasek threatened other players who tried to pull him away.

In a written statement to CTK, Hasek blamed the altercation on what he described as Sila's intentional crosscheck to his kidneys when neither player had the puck.

"In any case, I regret that his alleged injuries happened in the following scrum. If that is the case, I hope he heals soon," Hasek wrote.

A police spokesperson said officials were investigating the incident.

Bizarre. :eek2:

:eek2: Bizarre indeed...has Hasek ever been involved in goalie altercations? If the article's any indication, he's definitely got the attitude to have been in one or two...

I know he and Patrick Roy got into it. At least I think it was Roy.

Very strange. But I like this term "short-circuited behavior".

This is the same guy who was caught SPEEDING getting to game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals so I would expect nothing less than senseless savage beatings from him next. Don't be surprised if he begins robbing banks beginning next Tuesday and stealing cats from old ladies after that.

Shame on you Hasek!

:)

Isn't there something a little sad about a former A-list goalie relegated to playing in-line hockey. . . . . and having a hissy fit to boot!

It'd be like seeing Tiger Woods throwing a temper tantrum at a putt-putt course. :)

Hasek handed one year suspension
Associated Press

PRAGUE (AP) - Former NHL goaltender Dominik Hasek has been suspended from the Czech inline hockey league for a year after a bruising check during a game, the league's president said Wednesday.

The ruling follows a May 18 incident in Hasek's home town of Pardubice, 100 kilometres east of Prague. Hasek, who was playing as a skater for Bonfire Strida, collided with Martin Sila of SK Pardubice.

Sila spent three days in a hospital's neurosurgical ward and suffered a concussion and a broken nose.

``We ruled that what Dominik Hasek did was an unsportsmanlike conduct,'' said Ladislav Kopec, the president of the Czech Inline Hockey Association. He refused to elaborate on what the association discovered about the incident, nor what specifically he had done to warrant the charge.

The association also ordered Hasek to pay a fine of 2,000 koruna ($100 Cdn) - the highest possible fine in inline hockey here.

Hasek rejected the accusations last week, the CTK news agency reported.

``I am still convinced that everything just came out of the game, that I was fouled by him first. He denies this, but I don't agree that I did anything brutal,'' Hasek said.

The police are also investigating the case for any possible criminal charges against Hasek, CTK reported.

Hasek, 38, won six Vezina Trophies, two Hart Trophies and an Olympic gold medal with the Czech Republic at the 1998 Nagano Games.

He retired last year after winning the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings and now lives in Pardubice.

Former NHL star Hasek accused of injuring player at inline hockey match

PRAGUE (AP) - Police have accused former NHL star Dominik Hasek of hurting a player during an inline hockey match last month, an official said Friday.

Police informed Hasek he was suspected of having committed a criminal offence, said police spokeswoman Ilona Kratochvilova in Hasek's home town of Pardubice, 100 kilometres east of Prague. A prosecutor will decide whether Hasek will be formally charged with causing bodily harm, an offence punishable by up to two years in prison, Kratochvilova added.

Police started to investigate Hasek after a May 18 incident in Pardubice, where Hasek, skating for Bonfire Strida, collided with Martin Sila of SK Pardubice.

According to media reports, Hasek then knocked Sila down with a crosscheck to the back, sat on him, and hit him in the neck several times with his stick.

Sila spent three days in hospital following the match.

Kratochvilova said police have based their decision to accuse Hasek on eyewitness accounts and a medical report from the hospital, but refused to specify what injuries Sila had suffered.

Officials at the Czech Association of Inline Hockey refused Friday to comment. Earlier this month, however, they suspended Hasek from the league for a year for "unsportsmanlike conduct" during the May 18 match.

Hasek, 38, retired last year after winning the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings, and returned to live in Pardubice.

He won a gold medal with the Czech Republic at the 1998 Nagano Games, earned six Vezina Trophies as the NHL's best goalie and two Hart Trophies as the league's Most Valuable Player.

Man, if that article is accurate that would make Hasek a pretty rough character. I mean, he DID win the Cup and retire right after that...why would he go screw it up doing something dumb like that? (given that the article is reporting the truth about what happened)
