I have a problem maybe you can help me with. I installed a new 40 Gig Drive theg other day. I have been living on about 400 MB for over a year now. I ran the Drive Copy Software to copy the old drive to the new, and then used the new drive only on the master setting. When I rebooted, it said no operating system found. After putting both drives back in and making the new one the slave drive I ran the E(new) Drive. I noticed that a lot of the files were not copied. Is there a program to copy an entire drive including the OS (Windows XP). Any help would be sweet! :)

If I understand your problem correctly, than "Ghost" would be your best bet.. I'll try to get guyute on a lil later to give further info if needed.

PM Adrenaline...he knows every single thing about computers. He builds them from scratch...He has helped me out and I am sure he will know what to do...so PM him. Trust me!!

....

Uhh... yeah.

*ahem*

Anyway, MG--Shell is right, an imaging utility like Ghost would be your best bet for getting the whole thing copied over to your new drive.

Actually... I have talked with Adrenaline and he does know a lot about computer hardware. Spelling, maybe not so much, but I know a LOT of computer engineers around my workplace that can't spell. ;)

Just because they are in high school doesn't mean they are stupid. At 16, I was installing hardware for myself and my parents' friends, and my fiance (while still in high school) was also perfectly capable of showing someone how to copy their hard drive. (yeah, we are a bunch of geeks...)

I didn't think I said anything bad (and I certainly didn't call anyone stupid), but ok.

You do not know Scott (Adrenaline) and I do...and I know he is the man when it comes to computers!

But yeah Ghost sounds like the ticket here.

if you didn't use ghost, it probably wouldn't have copied the exact drive, but just copied the data over.

in which case you're new drive is not sys'd to allow booting.

use a pc of the same OS (or use your old drive if you still feel like booting from it), and create a start disk.

make sure sys.com is on there.

boot new drive with floppy, type: sys C:
should boot up now.

But yes, Ghost is the way to go. lemme know if you need a hand with anything. I've been doing this junk for probably almost as long as some of our members have been alive. lol
no offense meant to you touchy types, just a fact. ;)

I don't think anyone cares that you have a home network stormshaman. And guess what...I have a home network too! And guess who set it up?! ME! All by myself! Now let me ask you something....do you even care? No I didn't think so. Wanna say thank you to my friend Kenny and Kat for sticking up for me....and shaman...do you have any degrees in computer science? Because i have my CCNA (Cisco Networking) and I'm A+ Certified. But since you know it all.....I'll just leave it at that..because you got that home network!

Now! To the person that needed help in the first place! First of all if you still have that old 400MB drive in there...it would be in your best interest to get rid of it unless you wanna use it as a backup drive...because thats what I did with my old 1.19GB drive. But if you are going to run an OS, it's best to put the OS on the bigger drive and set the biggest drive (with the OS) as the master and the smaller drive (for backup) as the slave. The reason you want the bigger drive as the master is because the bigger the hard drive is...the more swap file memory you are going to have for your operating system; hence...tons faster performance. And if I read it right...you're never gonna be able to fit XP on a 400MB drive because it require a minimum of 1.2 - 1.5GB of space. But that's still not enough because you need even more room for swap file storage which will be filled up quickly...that is.....if you only have something like a 2GB drive. But anyways...back on the subject. Your best bet would be to install XP to your 40GB drive then take your old HD and copy the files to your new drive that you want saved. You do not wanna copy an OS to another drive with software because you can corrupt your registry as well as other files...and as you have experienced...encounter data loss. Just start over from scratch with your clean 40GB drive and copy everything over that you want. NOT your OS....remember that...just stuff like pictures or music or documents. Then if you wanna give yourself an extra 400MB space for backing up little things...hook it up to your 40GB drive as the slave. But make sure to set your 40GB drive to Master with slave otherwise it will think it's a single drive and it won't find your 400MB drive. I hope I solved your problem. NOW BEAT THAT SHAMAN!!!!!!! :D

Objection! Statement assumes object not in evidence!

In any case--why get rid of a perfectly good drive just because it's 400MB? Guyute's solution was far more practical and much simpler.

Guys, do NOT make this into a pissing contest.

I can lay out 20 certs. I can take a deskfull of parts (laptop or pc, doesn't matter) and put together a working unit (laptop or pc) in an hour. what's the point? if you want to provide help, do so, and that's that. if people want to get into a room and solve various pc issues, let me know and I'll furnish some stripped down laptops and bring a stopwatch for you.

But this is NOT the place.

so quit it.

one and only warning.

and Kenny... "I rest my case.... " is not a worthwhile post, nor does it mean jack to me.
don't waste my time or the sites bandwidth with "I told you so" posts, mmkay?

TIA.

Don't mean to be rude here... just getting the rules straight. So saying yeah whatever to someone's offer of help is okay, but saying I told you so is cause for a public smackdown? Just askin.

Just wanted to add, for MG--- feel free to PM me, or whomever you want, for continued support on your problem.

I'd say start a new thread, but you're likely to see where it would lead. I don't have the patience to dole out Timeouts.

But I'm here if you need my assistance.

Kenny's "post" illicited my response, which I thought to be totally fair. And then I was thoughtfully given "Permission" by the author to do what I wanted with it (I believe I did).
As to the previous posts, that had been 'worked out' already so-to-say, and the pissing contest post was directed at everyone here.

hope that clears things up.

piss-poor excuse for some helpful posts in any case. dude didn't ask who was the best tech, he asked a simple question.
