So was RBC. :D If they can do it, so can we. I saw a team out there today I hadn't seen in quite some time. Welcome back, boys.

The only thing better than making them pay in your house, is making them pay in theirs.

GO CANES!

NOW who's getting too cocky about a sweep, lmao.

That karma...it'll come back in bite you in the ass in the MOST inopportune times.

Better watch out for that.

BTW, not sure what Canes fans ever thought they'd sweep this series. I guess that must have been you Montreal fans thinking you'd get swept.

It'll be interesting to see if Whitney will make his brief appearance in Montreal. If he didn't show back up on the PPs after 2nd, not sure we can expect him on Wed.

Also - I knew we didn't get CAdams back, but I guess I didn't think it was as long as it was.

Anyone here any news about CAdams? I didn't have time read each and every article in the N/O.

SoCalcaniac

I hadn't even looked at that E- thanks; I just finished reading all of the paper, not a word on CAds, we need him out there big time. And if we can only get 5 minutes of Ray, and it's all PP time, I'll take it.

Something about Whitney in the lineup adds that boost. I like the adjustments Lavi made with adding Ladd into the mix and dressing only 6 D-men. My guess is he'll adjust again and the question or big elephant in the room is who starts in goal tommorow night? :eek2:

Here's a few things that need to happen for the Canes to have any chance in game 3:

Eric Staal needs to quit his whining. And knock it off with all these stupid penalties. Looks like he's losing his composure more and more as each game goes on, and it's doing nothing but hurt his game, and the team.

Mark Recchi either needs to step up his game, or get off the ice. He looks awful out there.

Get Babchuk in the game! If we're not going to play the game down low, and settle for perimeter shots, at least put someone in there with a heavy shot. And as for his defense, can it be any worse than what we've seen from the blueline the last 2 games? (Commodore and Wallin are exempt from that comment. I was very pleased with both of their play)

Stop the dump and chase! Montreal has shown to be a faster team in this series, and all we're doing is wasting time on the PP when we try this. It never worked when Mo was here, and it's not going to work now. Carry it into the zone, and then set up.

Lastly, Lavi needs to use every minute of practice working on outlet passes. These guys couldn't get a pass out of the zone most of the game if their life depended on it.

To tell you the truth Staal got four assists last night and had seven shots on goal he was close to winning us that game. But I think Staal needs to stay out of the penalty box.

Yeah, but 3 of the 4 assists were the "secondary assists". So, he just passed the puck to someone else that passed to the goal scorer. Not that big of a deal. Had he had 3 primary assists, it would have been a different story.

And the assists he got were from the point. Not that hard to pass the puck down low to someone, and let them make the tough pass to the goalscorer.

Sorry Kidder - I call BS on this post (in the nicest way possible). His primary assist was even strength and the other 3 were on PPs. For a PP that has been dismal for 2 games - I'd say the 2nd assist is FAR more than "no big deal".

I know we lost and I know it puts in a freakin huge hole, but reflecting back on the game - gosh, I'm happy I was there to see it.

The Habs using 5 dmen is pretty damn impressive, and all those PKs w/o CAdams and 1 fewer Dman than normal was damn impressive too. Our last 3 penalties (in the 1st OT) all had a PKer in the box. If we just could have scored on our sole PP in the 1OT.

I understand what you're saying, but on the flip side, how many times was he unable to control the puck while on the point, and it came out of the zone? I just didn't see where having him running the point was an effective use of his skills. All season, he has been on the high wing on the PP, and now all of a sudden, we decide to run him on the point. I just have to question that move. And I'll also put it like this... had Glen Wesley (or anyone else) been in Staal's spot on the PP, would he have also had 3 assists? Probably so. There was nothing special about the passes he made to get his 3 secondary assists.

I agree and why is this so?

Throughout the season we were the team that was blazing past defensemen(not just Erik Cole). We were the team that would bust out with odd man rushes. We were the team that would rush back to prevent odd man rushes by the opponents.

This is not a slam on the Canes effort last night. Those guys laid it all on the line and have nothing to be ashamed of. We just look sluggish and a step behind Montreal in open ice...any thoughts?

Oookay.

If it doesn't matter who is on the point, how come our PP was 0-for-whatever over the last 2 games prior to this one? I'm sorry that logic doesn't fly.

I'm not saying that Staal was perfect on the point, and my preference is probably that he be elsewhere, but it's hard to argue with success. I don't recall seeing a SH goal against us last night, so with 3 PP goals - it seems an odd argument to make this morning.

We do look sluggish. I think Staal after losing Cole is afraid of what might happen if he took it to the goal. I also think that the defense last night was pathetic, but a body on someone and don't let them walk in on goal. I just don't see where we went wrong now that we are in the playoffs.

In a previous life (I wasn't quite as smart as I am now)....I used to be a Red Wings fan.

In fact, my 1st experience with the Stanley Cup Playoffs was in 1987. I was in the crowd for the regular season home finale when Rob Ramage scored with less than a second on the clock for St. Louis to take the regular season division title away.

In the subsequent playoffs, the Wings faced the Toronto Maple Leafs. The results of that series:

Apr 21, 87 Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2, at Detroit
Apr 23, 87 Toronto Maple Leafs 7-2, at Detroit
Apr 25, 87 Detroit Red Wings 4-2, at Toronto
Apr 27, 87 Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2, in OT at Toronto
Apr 29, 87 Detroit Red Wings 3-0, at Detroit
May 1, 87 Detroit Red Wings 4-2, at Toronto
May 3, 87 Detroit Red Wings 3-0, at Detroit

In this series, I learned that NOTHING IS OVER until one team wins 4 games.

For those that believe in probability (& if I am reading this right) the Canadiens have only a 39% chance of winning Game 3.

http://www.whowins.com/tables/up20.html

If these aren't enough reasons to still believe, I was at Game 1 and have tickets for Game 5. I live in Charlotte, so weeknight games are a bit of challenge while also having a family and job.

I know I missed the first 3 goals and there's blame to go around on that. But what I saw of the game (last few minutes of the 1st thru the "5th") - I wouldn't use sluggish or pathetic to describe what I saw. I saw some guys busting their asses out there - all of them. Mistakes led to the 3 Habs goals, but I just can't use either of those words to describe what I watched.

E- I call BS on the post too  and agree with you....

Is Mike Bossy now posting on LGC? How are we now ragging on Staal who played a pretty gritty game last night IMO, and all of his assists were results from hard work? misguided blame being placed there eh? He's played the point at various parts during the reg season, if you've not noticed - so there's no shocker in that he was playing it last night. He's taken crap penalties, and I can deal with that, since his team mates have done it as well- it happens you move on. and whining is the domain of Sidney Crosby, Staal may get frustrated, and he has yapped, but whining is a stretch.

I also find it intriguing that we've had 2 or 3 posts questioning the strategy of Laviolette. The dude who started all of this and helped get us in the playoffs. Oh. Ok.

I guess we're all here to dissect and figure out what happened in any given game at any given time - I'm just not sure why these items specifically have been a topic of conversation.

Ok, between the test I bombed today since I chose the game last night over studying and the kid with the Canadien shirt I saw walking down the hall (I really could've done without that  ), I thought about some things to help us keep the faith for game 3....here's what I came up with:
1. From the N&O:
In 2002, the Detroit Red Wings dropped the first two games of their first-round series against the Vancouver Canucks and not only beat the Canucks but the Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup finals. That's the kind of history the Canes would like to repeat.

2. We need a comeback and who else is better for it than us? We came from behind last night...and remember at the beginning of the season where nothing could stop us? We were called the 'Comeback 'Canes' for a reason. If anyone can come from behind, it's us. If we stick to our game and give it our all, the Canadiens won't be able to keep up.

3. It's 2 games. It sucks...but somebody had to win them. If we had been the ones to take both, sure we'd feel confident, but we'd also have that nagging voice in the back of our heads saying that it can change just like that. We've had winning streak after winning streak this season...who's to say we can't string 2 together in a row to tie the series and bring it back home? We can do this!

4. We're heading to a building that we haven't lost in this entire season... it doesn't guarantee a win, but the situation could be worse. We need a comeback and we're heading to the building where one of our biggest ever occured...yeah it was a different team and a totally different situation, but who knows. That was just a comeback in a playoff game, maybe this time the building can help us out with a comeback in a playoff series. Think Miracle in Molson 2k6. Anything is possible!
I like Brindy's quote in the N&O:
"They got 2 in here, so why can't we get two in there? You never know what can happen."

If the fight that the 'Canes showed in the game last night is any indication of how they'll play in game 3, we shouldn't worry. Play for everything you've got, boys. Tighten up on the D and don't hesitate to shoot the puck. Now let's storm into Canada and raise hell...there's nothing I'd love more than to hear a repeat of the crowd back when we beat 'em 8-2....booing for the Habs and cheering for the 'Canes! GO CANES!

Have to agree. A ritual I (try to) have before every game is when CAds first gets on the ice, I have to proclaim, "He's a career minor leaguer." Usually that is good for a goal ;]

Edit: unfortunately for the last game I said "he's less a wolf and more a rat terrier. but he'll take your leg right off, one little bite at a time."

At the end of game 3 in any series between teams A and B, there are only 4 possible outcomes:

1. Team A 3, Team B 0.
2. Team A 2, Team B 1.
3. Team A 1, Team B 2.
4. Team A 0, Team B 3.

We're shooting for #3 there. There are 3 ways to get to #3:

1. Win, Lose, Lose.
2. Lose, Win, Lose.
3. Lose, Lose, Win.

All 3 end up with the same exact series standings.

I don't care how we get it done, if it's 1-0, 2-1, 10-1, it's the same. Just gotta get it done.

But more to specifics, I look to Recchi to have a good game. Not just because he's getting lambasted on the boards here, but because he's played for Montreal before and will hopefully feed off the energy of this game.

I wondered if anyone would catch that.

Greg Stefan was the starter, who got pulled for a guy named............................................. ........Glen Hanlon.

Stefan being with the Canes was EXACTLY the reason I put this story out there.

My favorite Stefan story (reported in the Detroit Free Press, but not personally verified) was the time he was injured and unable to play because he got injured picking up his child.......who is probably in college, or older by now.

Souray might dress: Takes one for team against Hurricanes

The Gazette

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

The Canadiens didn't practise yesterday, and didn't make defenceman Sheldon Souray available to the media, so there's no way of truly knowing whether he'll face the Hurricanes tonight at the Bell Centre.

Souray blocked a shot in a delicate area in the first period of Monday's game, and the team is saying he suffered a contusion. General manager and coach Bob Gainey said Souray might have returned, but management decided to be prudent. That makes it sound as though he could be in uniform.

"He's day to day," Gainey said. "He was better today. We'll see how he is tomorrow."

If Souray doesn't play, he'll be replaced by Mark Streit or Todd Simpson.

Drop the puck: Saku Koivu was tossed from the faceoff circle, and replaced by Garth Murray, late in the third period of Monday's game after goalie Cristobal Huet froze the puck. The Canadiens lost the faceoff and Cory Stillman scored the tying goal with 90 seconds left in regulation time.

Although Montreal won the game in double-overtime, that did little to quell Koivu's mood. Koivu, lined up against Doug Weight, said the linesmen must be more consistent on faceoffs during the playoffs.

"Our guys especially seemed to be kicked out," Koivu said. "There's got to be more consistency. Weight was too quick on his stick. I'm surprised, with (slightly more than) one minute left, that you'd get kicked out after the first move. It shouldn't be that way, unless you're consistently cheating."

Go figure: The Canadiens averaged 2.96 goals during the regular season but, through two playoff games, are averaging six goals vs. Carolina. Of course, it won't continue. But in the new NHL, the days of low-scoring and tight-checking playoff hockey appear over. Officials are even calling penalties in overtime! What a novel concept.

"It's what everyone wanted," Koivu said. "There's lots of things you agree with, but lots you disagree with."

Koivu doesn't like the number of two-man disadvantages teams are facing. Montreal took two penalties within 13 seconds late in the second period of Monday's game, leading to two Hurricanes' goals to start the third.

"Any game can change," Koivu said. "You can be up 3-0 but, with a couple of calls, the other team's right back in it. It's a good thing the game has opened up. The clutching and grabbing had gone too far. But they're also making penalty calls too quick and easy."

I'd like to see Babchuck. He really impressed me in the middle of the season, just coming over from a new team and taking the place of our high minute d-men. He is big and has a big shot. No offense to Wesley but he is neither. Before anybody jumps me on Wesley let me say I think the world of him as a player and respect all he does for the Canes. I just think some fresh blood on the back line might help. 12 goals in two games supports that idea.

Any predictions on when Stillman will twirl and fall to the ice this game? Strangely he did it in the last two games, what gives?

Cam Ward all the way.

I said this to a friend last night....

I have begun to realize why we lost the first two, and I believe it more and more. To win in 4 straight wouldn't do this club justice. It would seem to easy, it would be too ordinary. It wouldn't be the story I still believe we have coming to us. To be down again, to be counted out by anyone who doesn't know us - to have this Southern small market hockey club that everyone ignored go against the storied Habs down 2-0 - to lose in double overtime, to have to win it on the road...

HNIC called the comeback in the last game the Rally in Raleigh. That's fitting for the whole series.

We just gotta believe!!

My head is about to explode with all the anticipation of tonights game.

These guys in hab town are trying to take the CUP WHICH BELONGS TO US. Like the commercial says, THIS IS OUR STXNLEY CUP. AND THE HABS ARE STANDING IN THE WAY OF IT. It's time to KNOCK EM DOWN. WE NEED PERFECT GAMES FROM EVERY ONE OF OUR GUYS. No stupid penalties, and keep your heads up. I believe for certain our destiny is not to lose to Alexandria Kotex-lev. I still remember the bananas thrown at weekes. I remember our anthem being booed. I remember that swagger in their walks and in their faces in OUR arena that they did not deserve. This is not the habs' year.

It's the Ole Ole Ole song. They do it at most of their games. There's a punk band called Bouncing Souls who do a punk version that many of the arenas in the NHL play between plays.

In 2001 the Habs fans that came to the RBC Center would start singing it when the Habs would go up. We retaliated in our section by doing it when the Canes were up...and with the way we sing, it wasn't pretty. :)

I understand why we don't send a 2nd man in hard into the offensive zone on a PK, but why on earth did Matt Cullen have NO ONE behind him when we're on the PP?

I'm with you SHC, I'm cheering for Cam.

I imagine the the Joe-fans (are there any) will talk about the penalty he drew, but that was a bad call imo and Joe was damn lucky. SloJo can take a seat on the bench anytime now.

but why on earth did Matt Cullen have NO ONE behind him when we're on the PP?

Excellent question. I guess because that would involve skating and not just standing there watching someone else try to make something pretty happen all by himself?

Sad to see someone actually give the effort to skate the puck in deep just to have NO ONE to pass to, and NO ONE else to even draw a defender.

They have to win this - they have to. No other options.

I walked the dog with my Tao and listend to the Habs broadcast. They agreed with me ;) that Wallin was struggling tonight. I thought Nic had some great moments last night, but the first 2 periods (that I watched) he's looked shaky.

I don't know if I can watch or not - Rod scored just as I walked in the door from the walk, so I guess I'm allowed.

And Don Cherry just said MON should worry about Carolina because of the goaltending we are getting, the feeling that comes back after a win like this...Koivu being hurt....

I had the winning goal "spoiled" because there were TWO tv sets that were just a smidge ahead of mine because of the DVR. I heard TWO sets of YEEEESSSSSS (one from the Mr and one from the kids each in different rooms behind closed doors) about 10 seconds before my TV showed the goal. Normally that gets someone in major doodoo but tonight I was THRILLED.

But really, the PP finally looked like it was doing something - I actually said outloud (as I stood poised by the tv as I had for Roddy's goal): "that's it - now it'll happen". And it did.

Gotta say, I was SO diggin' seeing Staal Roddy and Willie out there together for the beginning of the OT - talk about setting the tone with the big guns.

Most of the funny part was quoting a song "Tables and Chairs" by Andrew Bird, so I can't take credit for that. But I will add this:

The last time we had a game 4 in Montreal, down 2 games to 1, there was a Miracle and Secret Weapon involved.

Tonight, Cam made so many huge saves it's hard to label this game anything but his. But the Charge of the Rod Brigade is something I'll remember forever. That was WILL, sheer WILL, to tie the game up.

MONTREAL (CP) - Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu was taken to hospital Wednesday after being cut near the left eye with a high stick during a playoff game with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Carolina forward Justin Williams appeared to be trying to lift Koivu's stick when he hit him in the face with his own at 4:52 of the second period.

Koivu, who wears a visor, immediately grabbed his face and reached for a referee to help him to the bench. He was bleeding from a gash near his left eye and appeared to be squinting.

There are gonna be some pissed Habs fans and pissed Habs. The Canes better be ready for it on Thursday. While I see how the refs either missed or err'd on our side on the call - any set of fans/teammates are gonna be peeved about it.

Totally agree Ice. This is Rod's team, and you can almost feel just how intense he is cause it nearly leaps into the stands or in tonights case, right through the TV.

Forecast is rain on Sunday...... and why does the game start at 7:30 on Sunday? and ahh.... thundersticks. :eek2:

I posted in the practice report yesterday that Staal went out for practice didn't participate in the other stuff and just shot pucks for about 25 minutes; McCarthy would feed the puck,or Staal would line up pucks and just start shooting, then McCarthy would provide the 'screen' Staal spent the first 25 shots shooting high, while McCarthy would say higher and on and on it went. Good for him for sticking to it. The extra work paid off.

Alright---my delayed reactions since I had to watch that goal over and over and celebrate:
I LOVE ERIC STAAL! Loving the smile..and I swear, he looked like he jumped 10 feet in the air. And just for the record, none of the boys are allowed to make fun of his celebration on that one, he deserved it! :D
CAM WARD IS MY HERO!
AND BRIND'AMOUR'S GOAL WAS AMAZING! Yet another awesome effort by the cap.
WOOO! Now we got ourselves a series...and another game back at the RBC! And that Eric/Erik interview was sooo nice to see! Made me smile to see both of them so happy!

As for Koivu--wow, you gotta feel for him. Never thought that it'd trun out to be that serious. All I heard about it was that Tripp saw him walking around in sweats when he was down there in the 2nd...never would've thought he'd have to go to the hospital.

SoCal - for all the hours you spend at practice, for the many more you have spent writing these wonderfully detailed, insightful, funny practice reports - if one email of mien helped at all...I'm thankful.

Rod decides to win it. You're right Ice. It's like he looks at the ice, the time, and decides it shan't be this way. If he was on the ice in that 3rd, he was going to score. To me, it's even fitting it wasn't the GW goal. That would be too splashy for him. Nope, he just tied it up, gave us our breath back and then let the guys do what they do - quietly heading back to the lockerroom.

And Eric - your face makes me cry when you score like that. It's so pure, so perfect..it's like all our smiles combined into one. :D

Finally, Cam. Holy smokes Batman. If anyone ever deserved anything, you did tonight. This kid - the poise, the grace...that team owed you that win. Consider it yours, kid.

Little IS picked a real beaut when she picked her hero...Here we all were picking out one player or another all season, and little IS had her eyes steadfast on the one we'd need in the end. That baby girl has vision and insight, I'll tell ya that much.

Thanks Canes. This win meant the WORLD.

Just a few things...1st I had to wake up my neighbor when Staalsy's goal went in...quite a few loud woo-hoos

2) WE definitely have ourselves a series now!!!!!
3)I sure hope Koivu is alright....but cannot play for a few weeks

4) Totally off topic : Josh McRoberts is staying at Duke

I mentioned the Koivu eye situation earlier in the thread when I was in here instead of watching. For those that were able to watch the whole thing - did John/Tripp actually discuss him not returning and that he'd gone to the hospital? Just curious.

.

E- they mentioned it, and like someone else said, Tripp mentioned seeing Koivu in his sweats, but I don't think they were informed he eventually went to the hospital.

LOL on Recchi mugging Staal- I slow mo'd it on Tivo so I could make my point to hub, that if he's gonna play on a line with Staaly, he has to move that fast, when he's out there....

I LOVE ERIC STAAL! Loving the smile..and I swear, he looked like he jumped 10 feet in the air. And just for the record, none of the boys are allowed to make fun of his celebration on that one, he deserved it!

Kiki- LOL- I don't think Staal will care if they make fun- after all Espo told him not to worry about his mates & to celebrate 'every damn goal cause it feels great to score kid'

TC- You hit the nail dead on- I'm with ya girl, Joe needs to show me something every game, not just a game after he sat out as a healthy scratch ;)
