Finally, the 'Canes take command, and lead the series 3-2. There was a time when I thought how cool it would be for the guys to finish a series at home, but you know what? I just want 'em to win-- and I don't care where. Just win.

I just have three words for them:

Get 'er done!

Puck drops at 7:00PM

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

As a Devils fan I know that you just want to win game 6 and don't want to play in an elimination game, even if it is at home (see Devils in '01)

Any word on OLN broadcasting this game? With several series closing out, they don't have any NHL playoff games scheduled for May 2. I don't know if there is a contractual issue that will keep OLN from showing the game. Just wondering, since I have OLN in my hotel room.

btw, did you Dish folks start getting OLN yet, or is that deal not kicking in for a while?

JMO, but if OLN has the choice between the Canes/Habs and Sabres/Flyers, it's going to be the latter. Kind of hope so myself. I'd like to finish this one out and then let them take notice.

*sarcasm* OR, we could have one of those invisible electric fences installed that outlines the crease. Cross the line, and get zapped. Everybody will stay where they're supposed to then, right Marty?*end sarcasm*

Anyhow, I hope the 'Canes can close out this series tomorrow. My nerves probably couldn't handle a Game 7, and besides, I want to hang out at RDU again! That was fun!

This incident had an important impact on the series between the Canadiens and the Hurricanes. It's annoying to see Williams also hit Andrei Markov in the face during the last game without being punished.

I agree about that....but it was away from the play and they aren't going to see it all.

How about Staal getting elbowed in the face last night and no call. It happens. What a whiney butt he is.

Hope we get a chance! :D

Except, he didn't get Markov in the face. It was the top of his helmet. Not defending it, the refs have been blind all the way around. Cullen also got elbowed in the face during a stoppage by Kovalev in game 1 with no call. There has been plenty missed on BOTH sides. And frankly, the Habs fans and media are just really starting to sound pathetic about it.

We were just burning game 4 to DVD and watched Brindy's goal. The puck popped out from under Huet as Wallin got there. He had very little to do with it. I guess his mere presence looming in front of Huet was enough to keep him from covering the puck.

Goals have been scored on us like that all year long! How many times have we seen Gerber at the bottom of a scrum in the crease with the puck not quite covered and before you know it the red light is on? Tons.

It's hockey. Stop complaining.

I find it a pity the referees don't deal severely with such violations more often, since they can cost the game.

 As if he has any room to talk about calls...is this seriously the same guy who dived the last time we played him and cost us the game?

Talent-wise, Brodeur obviously is one of the best goalies in hockey.

Having said that, off the ice I just can't stand him. This blog is a perfect example of that. His arrogance is just unmatched. I'm sure if (when!) we get to play the Devils, he'll have to fed-ex the refs full dossiers on everyone on our first three lines ahead of time because trying to "brief" the refs before the game on everyone he is planning on whining about would take us through the entire first period.

And here I thought the God of Whine was Bacchus. ;)

Ooooooo. Me too. I made the mistake of checking out their boards. My "friendly" competitive spirit suddenly turned PO'd! Granted, of course the majority of Habs fans are not represented by that board - but when they started claiming our Captain didn't match theirs I saw RED. Ok, I'm seeing red again right now typing this.

I mean, there are a lot of things you can complain about, especially being down a game and not feeling good about losing three straight, but knocking a player that the league, media and NHL fan consensus has collectively remarked in awe of his poise, grace, dedication, honor and leadership...

Well, now that's just pure biased, shortsighted and ill-informed sour grapes.

Honestly. Just because it's Marty I have to laugh. He just opened himself right up when he implied Rod would deliberately take a run directly at him. You say crap like that and my respectful kid gloves come falling off.

Beyond this, I won't say anything and I will be good, but you gotta wish that his pre-game "phone calls" would still be of some effect.

Meh. Private lives. Leave them be private, lest we invite people to bring signs asking Brind'Amour why he and his wife divorced, etc. I'm sure Martin made some bad decisions there, but that's his private life and I won't go there.

However, should the outcome result as we would like, well, let's just say (as my location does) that I'll be doing something at the RBC center this weekend other than shopping at the Eye!! :D

Interesting article.

I guess the guy quoted has a thing for Atlanta and went to those 2 away games for the Habs. I mean surely he hasn't confused Raleigh and Atlanta right?

NHL PLAYOFFS
Canadiens’ bandwagon blows a tire
MIKE BOONE

Apocalypse soon?

The smell of the Cup is fading fast, but if you listen carefully, you might hear the med-evac choppers circling the Bell Centre. And the legendary Forum ghosts are being shoved aside so the ghost of Jim Morrison can crank up his own dirge-like take on the Na-Na-Na-Na-Goodbye song.
This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend
The end of our elaborate plans
The end of everything that stands
The end

Then – setting the mood for Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam War masterpiece – the Doors’ beautiful, doomed singer goes on and on about a Roman wilderness of pain where all the children are insane. He rides the snake to the lake, and there’s also patricide and oedipal horrors almost as gruesome and brutal as the Canadiens’ power play.

That loud, mortar shell-like thud you heard late Sunday was the sound of Montreal hockey fans falling off the Stanley Cup Express. The team faces elimination at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 6 tonight.

And blue skies notwithstanding, there isn’t a whole lot of sunny optimism about the team’s chances of staying alive. The prevailing mood was summed up neatly by a cynical fan:
“What’s the Russian word,” he asked, “for ‘Fore!’?”
And does Expedia have a Czech or Slovak home page?

Because unless Robert Duvall suits up and a Ride of the Valkyries effects a shift in momentum this fine evening, a good proportion of the Canadiens’ roster will be making flight reservations – and not for Round 2 in Ottawa.

Of course, if the team wins tonight, we’ll all be waving carrots under the horse’s nose in the hope that the bandwagon will slow down enough for us to clamber back aboard. That’s the essence of being a hockey fan in Montreal: rigid adherence to principles that are readily adjustable to changing circumstances.

After the Canadiens won the first two games of the series in Carolina, I talked to Dave McGimpsey, a Montreal writer who has attended sports events all over North America. He takes a dim view of the Bell Centre’s beloved Olé, Olé chant.

“It’s a tad dainty for my taste – one step above ABBA tunes, really,” McGimpsey said. “I know we can’t go back to the un-PC ‘ooh, ahh, Habs on the warpath’ cheer, but this is really leading to the soundtrack of My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

McGimpsey also thinks the storied history of the Canadiens, combined with the supposed sophistication of the team’s fans, makes for an apprehensive atmosphere he finds admirably lacking in non-hockey markets like Atlanta.

“Fans of a franchise for a long time tend to be pretty hard on the team and glum unless they’re winning,” McGimpsey said.

Montrealers are not as caustic as Philadelphians, who, one wag suggested, fill the time when their sports teams are on the road by “going out to the airport to boo bad landings.”

But if the Canadiens fall behind early tonight – well, it’s going to take more than animated scoreboard prompts to pump up fan enthusiasm. That’s the flip side of that snazzy pre-game segment in which photos and videos of Stanley Cup heroes are projected on to the ice: the image of Jean Béliveau does not enhance one’s appreciation of Mike Ribeiro.

“Maybe that’s why I found the atmosphere in Atlanta more joyous,” McGimpsey said. “You don’t have that intense feeling of ‘oh, we better not lose, we better not choke.’

“Maybe they have a more naive appreciation of the fun aspect of going to a game. Whereas we have the illusion of sophistication, where going to a hockey game in Montreal is like going to the opera.”

Which is fun until the fat lady – or Jim Morrison – sings.

BTW - I guess FSN ditched Katy Temple? Didn't see her on the last home broadcast.

This game is ours to win. I listened to MTL radio yesterday.........holy cow, they're ready to slit their wrists up there. Calling out all the players, especially Ribero, not happy with Kovalev, and on and on.

Hurricanes aim for fourth straight win

Canadian Press

5/2/2006 11:43:40 AM

MONTREAL (CP) - Montreal Canadiens goaltender Cristobal Huet has taken all kinds of abuse in his team's playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes.

He's had his crease crashed, sticks jammed between his legs, his sightlines consistently blocked by Carolina forwards and even Hurricanes shooting the puck either at him or past him after whistles.

But rather than get rankled by the tactics, Huet is flattered.

"I think they're trying to bother me and that must mean we scare them in some way," Huet said Monday. "I think they're trying little things like that to get us out of our game. When they try to push things to the limit, I think we have to take that as a compliment."

The Canadiens host the Hurricanes at home Tuesday trailing the best-of-seven series 3-2 and needing a win to extend their season.

Though the Hurricanes have been a constant, unpenalized presence in Huet's crease over the past three games - all Carolina victories - things began changing in Montreal's 2-1 loss in Game 5 on Sunday.

Hurricanes forwards Matt Cullen and Rod Brind'Amour were each called for goalie interference penalties in the third period, though the Canadiens failed to capitalize on the subsequent power plays.

"The referees did a good job in the last game, so that's encouraging for the next game," Huet said. "If they have to do that to score on me, that's a great challenge for me, too. But if they want to do something stupid, they'll be in the box."

At the other end of the ice, rookie Cam Ward has stopped 80 of 84 shots in the three Carolina wins, but he has had a far easier time doing his job than Huet as the Montreal forwards have been unable to establish any presence in front of his net.

"Ward's playing well for them, but I would say he's seeing a lot more pucks," Canadiens defenceman Francis Bouillon said. "We need to go run some interference if we want to score some goals. We're having trouble getting big goals, so we need to bother him."

Canadiens head coach Bob Gainey concedes that Ward has played well, but he also feels his club has not made his life all that difficult.

"It's less about specific things with him as it is us trying to create more opportunities," Gainey said. "To whatever degree we've tested him, we haven't tested him enough."

Gainey said there won't be any major personnel changes for Tuesday's game, and he was clear that captain Saku Koivu will not be ready to make a return from the left eye injury he suffered in Game 3.

"Saku's situation appears to be improving day by day," Gainey said. "Each day there's a little less blood in his eye and his vision's improving. I spoke with him today and he says he's not in pain, but the discomfort and irritation is still there."

On Sunday, Gainey began the game with Radek Bonk filling Koivu's usual spot between Chris Higgins and Michael Ryder. But Steve Begin - playing for the first time since spraining his left knee April 8 - had a lot of shifts centring that line.

Begin is a faster skater than Bonk and plays a style that seems more compatible with Higgins and Ryder, but the fact remains that he's not Koivu.

"He's been our heart and soul and we know he's always with us," Begin said. "Everybody needs to bring more. It's not one guy who's going to replace him."

With Koivu missing the scoring burden has fallen on the line of Mike Ribeiro between Alex Kovalev and Jan Bulis. Though Kovalev - who had over 23 minutes of ice time Sunday as Gainey double-shifted him - has produced with four goals and three assists in five games, his linemates have combined for only one goal and three assists.

They will have to do more if Montreal is going to force a seventh game with a win Tuesday.

"If I can score in this game, I think what I did in the first five games will be forgotten," said Ribeiro, who has two assists in the series. "That's how I'm looking at it."

I looked at the still pictures I took - it was usually Habs players screening Huet and running into him (while chasing a Canes player around the back of the net_. Not to mention - Huet has a funny habit of coming OUT of the crease - tot he right or left to give Canes players LOVE taps.
...and Wardo had plenty of company in the crease...big borther Ward and Commie just kept clearing them out!

I may regret this (again),

But from where I sit - Huet is right on. The Canes HAVE been trying to rattle him - and they've been successful - the scoreboard seems to indicate.

We've had 2 interference calls the last 2 games (accuracy of the calls aside - we've knocked into him a number of times), and Recchi and I'm forgetting who (Adams?) most definitely shot the puck into the net twice in the last game after the whistle. I think we all recall how Rod stood up for Gerber when that happened twice with the Lightning. They weren't big shots from the point or anything, but definetely after the whistle (they happened right in front of me).

I hope that Cam can handle whatever is thrown (literally and figuratively) at him tonight. The clinching game is the hardest to win. Despite their relative ease with which the Sens disposed of the Lightning - you could tell the massive relief they felt after Game 5 and how difficult it really is.

The shooting the puck late I'm totally with you on - saw that on TIvo last night and was surprised there wasn't a fight...Recchi's was way after the period horn! Didn't see that in the arena.

Wasn't saying it wasn't happening (cause I saw it happening, too) - just that I saw it happening with his own players as well and that I thought it was kinda going both ways and being blown a little out of proportion by the Montreal media. :) The Habs players were trying to get at Wardo, but the defence was really looking out for him...again - just from what I saw in the first 2 periods on Tivo last night and the game real time. :)

Yes, based on their comments and the score of the last 3 games - Cam will have all sorts of targets on him this evening. I think he'll face a different kind of game this evening - and I think it proves that the Canes being in Huet's face at every opportunity, punishable or not, has worked. That said - Huet's lost these 3 rather low scoring games by 1 goal. His confidence probably isn't that shaken.

Hang tough Cam!

I hope the refs are prepared to call things the way they have in regard to Huet the last 2 games - that would help thwart things a bit.

I'm getting so sick of Habs sportswriters and their whining. Just once I'd like one to write that the better team is winning this series! Is Huet hurt, what's the fuss? You would think this is a kid's league or something. Maybe we should drop our sticks, back out of the crease, just stand there and let the Habs win? Maybe that would make them happy?

I sure hope that we continue to "abuse" Huet every which way tonight.

Well the Recchi after the whistle/horn thing was due to it being really loud in our building- I mean I didn't realize the Hedican penalty happened because I couldn't hear myself think!

Yes, they're gonna try and disturb Cam, I totally expect it- and I also expect that we'll see our guys locking down to take care of any potential disturbances.

GO CANES.

I agree - I hope we can continue the winning ways which include getting in Huet's face/crease/whatever (I could use a little cushion to protect the nerves but I'll take a W any which way).

IMO, the fact that the Canes changed their game plan and execution (and goalie) after game 2 certainly has been the difference.

I'm not sure what else Huet is going to say - "yeah - they scare me to death". He may twist it to say it's a compliment, but obviously it's a compliment to the Canes game plan in game 3-5 as well.

Gainey and Carbonneau are no dummies - I expect their team to be fully prepared. But I'll have to agree with Cristobal's quote on this one:

The referees did a good job in the last game, so that's encouraging for the next game," Huet said. "If they have to do that to score on me, that's a great challenge for me, too. But if they want to do something stupid, they'll be in the box."

That works both ways.:D

What a bunch of freaking whiny babies. I hope we pound Huet like a drum (reference to our goal scoring) and make him wish he had never chosen hockey as a profession. And I hope Cam stands on his head to keep them out...completely

I think about Justin getting rammed into the goal post and the numerous hooks and trips that the refs see and choose to turn a blind eye to...

Welcome back Mona!!

I think the difference in Montreal and us is we're just playing hockey. Yes, Les Habi-whiners, it IS hockey to crash the crease, to screen the goalie, etc, etc. And easily most of the time we've ended up on top of Huet we were pushed into him by THEIR players. Not every time, but certainly most. Cullen's goalie-interference....yeah, OK, if the goalie running into you OUTSIDE the crease is interference, then I guess he did it. The goal that was waved off, Brindy wouldn't have been on top of him without 3 Habs players pushing him there. Like I said about the Calgary game last night, how long before teams learn if you push a player with a scoring chance onto your goalie or, you run your goalie yourself you'll get the goal waved off.

Tonight, the Habs aren't just playing hockey. They're TARGETTING Ward. I sure hope he comes out of this series without a serious injury.

My nausea has set in as well.

I am definitely not one to get nervous at all, or even vaguely emotional before a game, but right now I am absolutely pumped up. It kind of has to do with the fact that this will be a welcome diversion from basically two straight days of studying for finals, but obviously the implications of the game have me excited.

Hope my suitemates don't mind some yelling tonight when they're studying, because most likely I will be quite enthusiastic...

Just some jostling and jawwing, up in each others' face kind of thing. No big deal. But I'm surprised it doesn't get beyond that.
