On the Hockey Night show on FSNY Broduer just said something interesting. He said he wishes his defensemen would have just let Nicki come in on him. "he's a defenseman, I could have stopped him" LOL Yeah, OK.
He's also whining just a touch about Williams breathing near him. Seriously, said he was coming in on him all night long. No....really....he wasn't. At least not to an illegal extent. Skating towards the goalie is allowed, Marty. Even if he's wearing #30 on the back and a wrench on the front. ;)
Awwww...Fish thinks Peter is condescending and our players have had "wise cracks" to make. Hell if I've heard them.
I've been super impressed with the way the players on both these teams repsect each other. It's awesome.

Not much to add here, what a game! Have a bit of a funny story though. With 20 clicks left a few people around us were leaving. One guy was yelling at them..."where are you going? the game isn't over!! " they ignored him and continued to leave. Well, after Staal scored they came back of course, and the heckler yelled at them some more... "go back home..we don't want you here..!! the game is over, remember?? " LOL it really cracked me up.
When Staal scored I was jumping up and down, screaming like an idiot. What a friggin stud he is. We REALLY have something special with him here.

GUYS. We just went from splitting at home, to heading to NJ with a 2-0 lead, in the driver's seat!!!! This is a team of destiny! How can it not be?
3 seconds left -- wow. what a memorable game. WHAT a memorable game.

I'd hate to ever miss a goal but I'd give anything to have heard that building from the parking lot when Staal scored.
Well, I disgustedly led the exodus of the unfaithful out the West Exit at 19:40. My 10 y.o. son made a pit stop at the PortaPotti, so we hadn't gotten very far. I continued to listen to the play-by-play via my Walkman FM, and gleefully announced Staal's goal to the incredulous fleeing throng. The din from the RBC actually took several seconds to ramp up, validating that assertion.
The entrances all remained locked & unmanned. However, we all hustled back in via the Smoking Deck, against the flow of dozens of nicotine junkies headed out for a puff during the third intermission.
Next time, we'll stay planted in our pricey Playoff seats. As the late Tug McGraw taught the '73 Mets and '80 Phillies: Ya Gotta Believe!

Nick - our Canes didn't get out played for 2 periods. The got outplayed in the 1st and steadily, STEADILY, took control of the game. 9 shots over the 2nd, 3rd, and OT periods.
What a memory!
first period, legs in concrete...2nd period they started to get their skates moving and your right, midway in the 2nd, the tide started to shift.....honestly, with the way they were skating in the 1st I didnt think they would be able to break through the NJ defense, unless they got their skates moving...thankfully, they proved me wrong, and came out and outworked the devils late in that game...
wow...probably the loudest stadium I had been in was to see Tino Martinez hit a grand slam in the world series...last night topped it...
O..M.. G!!! What an awesome game. When they scored with 20 seconds left, I felt like a balloon with the air gone.. and the Jersey fan behind me was celebrating!! Much to his dismay, 17 seconds later, my shiny pom-pom was waving in his face. I was thinking about all the people that left and didn't see the goal, and depending on the rules of the arena, missed the OT too... (see the explanation above)
I am so proud of our guys for all their grit and determination. I love them so much. :spin: I think all of us in the arena willed that puck in for Mr. Staal...
and Brodeur can kiss my ass!!  :D

Tell me about it. I'm sold.
What an AMAZING event. One of the most-memorable moments of my life, certainly pertaining to live sporting events. You simply can't say enough about this team ... every last one of them.
As for the early departing fans: some were leaving while Gomez's goal was under review, and I was screaming at the people around 336 to get back in their seats, that the goal was under review. Even then, how do you leave with 20 seconds left??
I don't know that that can ever be topped.
Well ... I can think of one thing ......

As I told a friend going into Game 1, we need to rattle Brodeur and he'll implode like Cujo did that one year when he went after the ref.
Just keep going in front of the net, get the D to key on that. Take them off their games.
Brodeur does slash.. he tries to hit everything that comes anywhere near his crease.. and behind it as well. Every time out last night, he was working the refs. I guess he wanted them to get him a pacifier and bottle.

Brodeur's really annoying the hell out of me. Respect his play to no end, but I've never heard a guy with such experience and credentials hide behind excuses.
We got bounces? How about off Commodore's stick, off Gomez's stick, off one post, off the OTHER post, and in the net?
PUH-Leeze!
In the meantime Cam's been quiet as a church mouse — and humble when he does talk — and stopping everything (really, everything ... neither of the goals he' allowed in this series were stoppable w/o luck, IMO).
They got lucky," Brodeur said.
"It's a tough loss to take when you're in the game and you deserve the game to a certain extent," Brodeur said.

Unbelievable.
Jersey came out stronger, but we made our mistakes. Coverage was not good for Langenbrunner's goal, and we took some undisciplined penalties at inopportune times. On Jersey's go-ahead goal, our forwards were all trapped way, way too deep. But it still didn't seem real -- we had dominated the last 40 minutes of play, only to lose like this? To dominate all of game 1 and two-thirds of game 2, only to go to Jersey tied 1-1?
But what can you say. The boys got it done. Staal manned up and this time it was Jersey nowhere to be found around the net. The Secret Weapon with another playoff OT winner.
What an insane game.

Why does a man of Brodeur's stature shed so many alligator tears?
Brodeur knows the Devils' saddle rests squarely on his back and if the puck gets by him....hard times in the swamps of NJ. That's a load of pressure right there.

CL- yeah, I noticed it awhile ago- and never had the guts to mention it - "obviously" ;)
Ok, I'm just now checking in after reading all y'all's (is that right native NCers? :D ) posts and having had to be in a 7am meeting with a bunch of other department heads- so anyway:
WOOOOOOOO ! for all the people who left with 20 secs to go- shame on you! And if you didn't see the news last night (ch17) , Staal even mentioned it- "well, it was tough, we were a bit down after Gomez scored, but this team believes- even when I saw people leaving, we just decided we would make something happen......" (ouch)
Anyway, what else is there to say, except how can you not be proud of this team? And all the folks who are leery of that "DESTINY" tag- Chuck K just guaranteed the Canes would win the series- 'because this is a team of Destiny" LOL.
That building went through more emotions than I have ever seen- and as mentioned in several posts it seemed like we were down and out- but then the people who stayed seemed intent on willing this team to 'something' and what to say about Eric 'our Prize' Staal. I know I have harped on him being our "prize" for the horror of a year we had in 02-03, but it's true. There is something golden about him- and I'll continue to honk that til it becomes untrue. :D I know y'all heard him down there screaming "up front, Willy, Up Front" cause I heard it in my seat too. Meanwhile I had fingers over both hands peeking just hoping and then he scored! My never-to-be-rattled-husband jumped up in the air, and then picked me up almost over his head- while the entire section screamed, gasped, laughed and roar- LOL. I am sure, (and I heard that guy on the aftermath too- lol) that it did sound like an explosion when he scored that goal. I Tivo'd OLN's broadcast, we watched the tying Staal goal and Nicky's goal, will watch the whole thing later- and the sound on the broadcast, was thunderous. I my ears are still ringing, my voice is cracking and I am still just dying. The topic in my department meeting for the first 20 mintues a was all about the Canes- all but one person in the meeting were there- and the person who wasn't there was bumming and wanted a full on play by play by all the people in it. And what can we say about the SECRET WEAPON? There are no words. I looked at hub after the pass from Rod and I said "Nicky's du-----------------" before the words came out he scored and once again my hub decided he was Hercules and up I went......
Elation is on one way to describe the feelings. Especially after witnessing the dejection in Cam's face- and before that- seeing little Kam getting pushed off her usual spot by some overzealous girls and thinking the mojo was LOST.
Ran into Mona and B13 after all the hoopla on the way out- and Mona's story about the Devils fan behind her was priceless. We all agreed we couldn't take another OT though!
I know the Invoice debacle is still a sore spot for some/most- and I'm glad to hear that folks wanna take a leap and go ahead and do it. I totally don't regret us drinking the kool aid and just paying up. I have to be there to be witness to more DESTINY.

What an amazing game. Got to freaking love that chant of "GOAL, GOAL, GOAL". I have never been a part of anything like that in my almost 30 years of life. What determination, character, and heart by this team to score with 3 seconds left to tie it up after just going down 20 seconds ago.
As people were leaving when the Devils took that lead and everyone was leaving, Cory was sitting there screaming at people "you don't leave, the game's not over, where are you going". I found out later that a few of my friends had left early too. It just goes to show you NEVER leave a game early.
As much credit as everyone deserves, a big thank you to Aaron Ward as well for that amazing defensive play on the 3-1. A Ward possiby might have won the game for us with that Defensive play.
Can't wait for Wednesday.

Good morning.
I'm downing airborne and prepping for another day of seeing old friends before (reluctanting) preparing to leave tomorrow morning. Notes from last night:
- Tailgate was great, good to see everyone again. Ya'll make me feel like I never left.
- My ticket hook up got me in Suite 212 right behind the goal zone. I was up there with (what seemed like) a bunch of either Jr. Ticket reps or something b/c when Staal hit the puck in they knocked over a samll child they were all jumping up and down together.
- Great seeing you Mona!!
- Ice Saber, I understand now why little IS is such a fav of Cam's- she's cute as could be!! Great to finally meet you.
- Most of you know how I feel about leaving early. It's like missing the puck drop- it's something I never do. I retold my story after last night of the game in December 2003 vs. the Pens that was Lavi's first game with us. A couple were leaving with about 40 second left and I said "why are you leaving- games not over". They stayed and Brindy got the goal to tie it up and O'Neill got the game winner in OT. Wallin once again proved WHY you should never leave a Canes game early, especially when it's that close- you can't underestimate our guys.
- This security guy near section 115 (not one of the trolls but a really nice one with the buzz cut and one of those red jackets) was very impressed when Kat told him of my journey here Friday night, getting in 2 hours before the game on Saturday and how I am (according to some) the loudest girl in the NHL. He asked for my name and email address so he could tell management about me. I don't know- maybe I'll get some free tickets that next time I come, but my tickets this time were great for both games!!
- I was clearly screaming "Brodeur you're a baby" from the Suite, which got some looks but overall there weren't as many stiffs up there as I'd thought.
- This game now jumps to the top of my best games ever attended. It knocked off the game vs. Detroit in November 2002.
Wrap up:
Plane ticket $293
Game tickets $95
Stock up on tshirts and pins at the eye $59
Watching the most awesome team in the NHL whoop some NJ butt with the best fans & tailgaters (and my best friend)- priceless.

The folks in front of me and behind me left at that time. I wound up having an extra ticket and took none other than my mom (who lived in New Jersey for the first 31 years of her life, mind you, and was screaming, "Go back to hell!" louder than most ).
When Jersey scored with 20 seconds to go, Mom grabbed my arm...not just grabbed, but did that squeeze that only mothers do, the kind that sends pain shooting throughout your body, the one used to yank you back when you were little and tried to jump in front of traffic (perhaps she thought I was going to jump over the ledge...). I was distraught...after listening to Mom say, "I don't want overtime, let's win it in regulation!" throughout the entire game, I suddenly thought that she got half of her wish. When the "miracle goal" with 3 seconds left went in, we jumped up, screamed our heads off, hugged, and when I asked her, "Do you want overtime now?" she responded with an enthusiastic, "<expletive> yes!"
Moms are great ;) She had never been to a playoff game before, so I have a feeling we'll be talking about this one for a long time to come.

I so have to get to a practice one of these days... been literally years! Luckily my new job is right by the Rec Zone so for next year, will be a lot easier.
Anyhow, my thoughts... I was so bummed when NJ scored, but we didn't leave. I just looked down at my hands and hoped against hope they would call it back. Then, continued to just look down, waiting for the game to end... then... HOOONNNNKKK!!!! and I kept going OMG, OMG, OMFG (luckily it was loud so the people around me couldn't hear me swear!)!!!
I just can't believe we came back. I still can't believe it. This team is incredible, and man, they are sure making my debt-load increase of rounds 3 and 4 easier to bear!

Maybe PuckinA can comment on this, but my son pointed out the bevy of humanity that was standing in the corner of the rink at the visitors entrance during OT. Poor Clemmenson had to leave his perch and was standing up among a throng of guys in black NJD warmups (equipment/trainers guys presumably) and then a number of suits. They were all blocking his view I think.
I guess this game was on TSN as well? Did I see Glenn Healy in that corner before the game? Or are my eyes that bad?

As much credit as everyone deserves, a big thank you to Aaron Ward as well for that amazing defensive play on the 3-1. A Ward possiby might have won the game for us with that Defensive play.
no friggin doubt. when we watched some bits of the game after getting home last night, I got another good look at that and said that was probably THE definsive play of the year. absolutely beautiful.

Our friends took off at the 20 second goal. I grabbed my hubby's arm and said let's just wait. It's only 20 seconds, they'll pull Cam and anything can happen. Boy, was I right. It was great. I love the playoffs.
Fortunately, since we have 3rd level seats, our friends hadn't made it out the door before Staal's goal. They showed up about 30 seconds later

One of the things that got lost when Erik went down and we had our struggles might be that Wallin had a long stretch of being out with an inury as well, and only in the past several weeks has he really been back to 100%. He is just a rock back there, notwithstanding the "Secret Weapon" stuff.
Kaberle has played absolutely awesome in this series so far. Aaron Ward and Commodore have been beasts, Hedican skating all over the ice... you don't have to mention Wesley because there's a reason Bad Things don't happen when he is on the ice, so solid.
"Strong from the net out." Cam, the D-corps, the defensive forwards, all a committed effort.
So awesome to be in the building once again, another great chapter in the Hurricanes story. I've made every playoff game since I moved to Durham back in 2000, except for the England trip for the last home game of the ECF and all of the SCF. And it looks like I'll be missing the "if necessary" game 5 on Sunday, as I'll be "back home again, in Indiana" for one of my younger brothers' university graduations (and yeah, Old Man Caveman's 60th birthday and a bit of a Caveman family reunion).
I love the highlights, the fans were just going nuts, all the flags, all the screaming. Love the pic of Kevyn yelling into the glass, Wallin's leap... what a game.
And I've been on the fence for so long about who to put on the "new" home red Reebok jersey. Wallin was a finalist for the "old" home white, but that finally went to Gelinas. I was leaning towards Daniels, but I think Wallin is securely in the lead again for jersey stitching this summer.
I love nicknames. I loved the Eliminator, but we've got a Secret Weapon, a Silent Assassin, and a Wizard; a Wrecking Ball; and of course the Warchief. I dunno yet about "the Warden" for Wardo, I saw a couple of signs for that in the RBCC.

That was the most amazing thing I have ever experienced take place at a hockey game. I drove from Charlotte with four friends for the game and was with my family there as well and I could not believe the range of emotions in the last 25 seconds of the game. I didn't even want to look up at the ice after the Devils scored late, but I did and then saw the empty net on the center ice faceoff, Brindamour lose the draw, and then chaos. Great pass by Williams, and a relatively timely goal by Staal. Amazing to see the people running back in, people high fiving and hugging strangers, etc. I was in shock.
And just in case you want to see the game again and didn't DVR it, it is on in HD right now on INHD1 here in Charlotte. 5 minutes left in the first period right now.

LMAO!! When I first looked at this picture, I didn't notice the stanchion, and see the guy in the black baseball hat? I was staring at the guy, thinking, "How did Ron Francis get on the ice so fast? And why would he be wearing his jersey???"

Upon a closer look, it appears to be Jesse Boulerice's warm-up jersey from Ron Francis Night.

Absolutely! Not to dwell on the past (although I do believe it to be the turning point), I said to my co-workers that after last series' game 2 OT loss vs. Montreal that I went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in a split second. So, so, SO glad that I was able to say the exact opposite to all the folks who crowded my cube at work this morning!

Come on Canes!!! Let's get this over with!!!
What is it Batesb says "Score a freakin' goal already!!!"
Hopefully it works if I post it :p
The key, per SHC, is to be specific with your request. She is player-specific (as in "You! Cullen! Score a freakin' goal already!!!"), whereas I am just team-specific ("Canes! Score a freakin' goal already!!!"). Otherwise, the hockey gods, while complying with your request, may become confused and bestow their blessings on the opposition. ;)

Speaking of destiny, one of the prettiest goals of the season, tape to tape to tape to net was scored by 18 at 18:18 of the second period to tie it up. Thought I had heard it announced that way at the game, just confirmed…
18:18 Power Play - Mark Recchi (2), Tip-In - Assists: Ray Whitney and Doug Weight

Mike giving a little soccer-style defense. Note the orderly, single-file line of white-red-white-red-white men-- that amuses me:

Someone (too much catching up to do) mentioned that the OLN guys only knew 2 Canes. Maybe, but not very well. During a play-by-play part, they called them RoB Brind'amour and Michael Staal. I had to replay it a few times, because I thought I heard that wrong.
Also, I loved the way (even with OLN announcer rather and Tripp) Whitney did his routine.

I just found this in a post on wral.com, thought it was kinda funny.
"Tick-tick-ticking, ticking clock,
Counting down, Carolina tick-toc.
Brodeur focused, set for the bout
Brodeur say, "Me shut 'em out".
At 6:20 he may be right,
Devils put the puck in flight.
Lang'brunner say, "first goal is mine",
Tick-tick-ticking, ticking time.
Brodeur fall, he hit the decky,
18:18, here come Recci,
Puck deflects, puck is in,
Canes have tied, but have no win
Sand is running, seconds ticking,
Here comes Gomez cherry picking,
Gomez shifting, use his sticky
Boy these Jersey devils are tricky!
20 seconds still remaining,
Hopes are dashed, crowd is leaving,
Williams weaving, Staal he spies,
3 seconds left, Canes have tied!
Overtime, Canes fans roar,
Marty Brodeur back for more,
Marty grumpy... huffy-puffy,
This time Marty show his stuffy:
"Me no get beat by no rookie,
This time Marty close the booky."
Brind'Amour, big and bruising,
Open ice, sees Wallin cruising,
Takes the pass from Rod the beast,
Marty ready at the crease,
Wallin deaking, Wallin rushing,
Marty's legs they turn to mushy,
Wallin pushes, crash the net,
Did his skate the puck deflect?
Goal contested, in review,
Up to T'ronto, Raleigh boos.
Ref now says it's understood
time defeated, goal is good!"
24 hours... just can't get here quick enough. I wish it was tonight. ugh!
