We're up 1-0 and I'm like this:

:nanner:

Fortunately, our captain and other vets are like this: http://forums.soccerfansnetwork.com/images/smilies/yawn.gif And they're reminding themselves and the youngsters that it's only 1 game--don't get too high. I'd imagine this 2nd game to be a tougher battle.

Whoo, Devils could come out playing with a vengance in this one. Let's hope the team can continue strong defensive play...and get some more of those funky bounces.

The key, imo, is to just keep playing like they have been...keep it simple, continue their "attack"...wear 'em down & rattle Marty some more.

Just don't hurt my Little Bitty.

If the Canes play with the intensity they did today we should be good. I expect the Devils to come out and play a lot harder than they did today so the score will come down but in the end we've still got the edge.

Now we're on the win streak, five and counting, and in the back of their minds they'll be thinking just lost by 6 goals and were shutout by a rookie while our netminder was run out of the building. :D

CANESFREAKinDET

I totally expect to see the Devils come out bruising and totally cruising, ready to take vengeance for their oh-so-recent slamming, but you know what?

I TOTALLY expect the Canes to take their confidence from Saturday and put it to good use! Another home game, another oppotunity to be (another) game up on the Devs, I think the Canes are gonna be working extra hard to try and make this series even tougher for them to swallow. Part of me thinks that Monday is going to be a REALLY close game, as the Devs might try to shut the Canes down more, BUT I also think partly that the Devs are still going to perhaps take the Canes for granted, thinking still that this could be a series they could pull out easy.

Our boys should prove them wrong, I got some good vibes from Game 1--Keep it UP Canes!! You guys rock! Don't give 'em an inch! :D

(edited to say, I finally hit the 1000 post milestone, with you guys!! Here's to thousands more! hehehe! :smoke: ...Some MORE good karma for Game 2, see?)

Lets hope for another win. I am heading up to NJ for game 3 and would love to have a 2-0 series lead!!

I think the boys will come out playing very hard, as they know that NJ will. This looks like the Canes team that had the two 9 game win streaks and I think this is the 4th 5 game win streak of the season.

Hey MG... since you work in the arena I wondered, can you tell me what they consider to be "vulgarity"? We got yelled at by some ushers but they couldn't tell us what we said that was questionable or give us a list of what we shouldn't say. The only thing we could come up with was chiming in on a Ref You Suck chant. Does "suck" count as vulgarity?

I know that sometimes hubby and I can be really loud, but I promise, we only swear when we are losing! And we sure weren't losing last night, so I am just confused...

WOO. I expect to see some Rick Flair, the Leprechaun, Dumb and Dumber, and some crazy ass wild Canes fans wanting their team to win. I want to leave the arena with my ears shaking from the goal horn.

Brindy and JWill -- shut down the Elias line.

Commodore -- introduce yourself to Gionta. Be real friendly like.

Cam -- if you thought Montreal was tough, this is going to be the next level. You've always stepped it up in crunch time throughout your career. This is it. Show the world, baby. This might not yet be a Pivotal Global Event but if you make the big saves at the right time you will become legend.

Staal -- take over. Be Eric the Red. Be a beast. These Devils defensemen are too slow for you.

Weight and Recchi -- nobody said this was going to be easy. You gave up a lot to get here. Now kick some ass, don't bother with the names. It's the Devils we're talking about.

Stillman -- bring the BODY game. When you do, the entire team looks like they've been shot out of a cannon.

Can't improve on it, only sustain it. Bring the noise, bring the pain, bring the energy, bring the effort, and bring us a 2-0 series lead, boys!

Hey MG... since you work in the arena I wondered, can you tell me what they consider to be "vulgarity"?

I think the Supreme Court's ruling on pornography boiled down to "uhhh... uhh... you know it when you see it". Figure if the highest court in the land can't make a decision, then there is no way an hourly employee at a sports venue will be able to make accurate and consistent decisions.

Is there any doubt the Devils are going to play 100% better on Monday than they did on yesterday? During the 15 game winning streak they were playing well and not taking dumb penalties. They just gave up around the end of the 2nd and started trying to knock someone out. The Devils may not win, but they will make it a lot closer than game 1, I have Marty's word (seriously I do). I am thinking that Cam Ward will have another good game but will allow a goal or two and Marty will do the same. Somewhere around 3-2 in OT in favor of a team with red on their uniforms.

I wish I had watched more of the Rangers/Devs series because then I could ponder whether or not Jersey f**ked up that bad yesterday or if we really were that good. I seems to me people are pretty much chalking yesterday up to us catching the Devils at the right time, since all streaks must come to an end. That's very true, but damn, we scored 5 PP goals and our D was stifling. I wouldn't be surprised at a 4-1 Canes win, to be honest.

I don't care if it's 3-2 in OT or 12-0 after the first. You never, ever skate into the next game cocky or you are just asking to be skated into the ground. I hope it's a good game. I hope it's an exciting game. OF COURSE I hope we win (duh!) but I also know these guys are professionals and will come into the next game like their lives depend on it. Tony Soprano....I thought that was Uncle Fester from the Addam's family.

Richard would tie his arms around his head like a clown tying balloons at a birthday party then drag him at 200 mph behind the 43 - while snorting up a Goody's.

Buck LeMieux

If New Jersey is not allowed to turn it into a Greco Roman wrestling match at the red line then I like our chances.

To reply to someone saying Elias will likely get untracked...every time he got the puck there was a Cane directly in his path - every time - doing the job legally and correctly and not clutching him. You do that enough times and your chances are pretty good. It's all in the execution but the plan is a good one - good job Coach Lav.

I think the definition of vulgarity depends on the usher. I have seen some people get away with droppping s and f bombs although they should not. I have seen people get asked to calm down for yelling "crap" at the officials. Never seen anyone get called down for the word "suck". Hope that helps.

Well for me, I see a few interesting things occuring.

1) We are finally returning to pre-olympic form. Each game since Round 1 Game 1 we have gotten better.

2) The Devils are way overdue for a confidence rattling run. Sure Marty B is the best goalie with skates - But how can he feel? In 5 games this year hes been sent to the showers early by us 2 times? To top that off one of his very best perfomances ever was in 2002 against us and yet... they lost.

3) Our guys are getting on their toes and skating downhill more and more each game now. Our defensemen are putting the chin to the ice more and helping out, and our forwards are getting back. Our defense is also getting better and better. Is it just me or does NJ seem totally inept at handling our Speed with Ray back in?

4) Cam was not tested in game 1 until halfway thru the third period. I look for the Devils to try to "run" him a few times early in the game. I also expect the officals to be super sensitive to us when we are near Marty B's net. Don't be suprised if we see some baseless calls on us. (See Marty B/Fish Imitation)

5) I am still terrified the officiating will return to pre-playoff form. If so advantage Devils

Those are good. A few of my favorites that don't really make good chants but are fun to yell (although they are slighlty more vulgar):

Hey ref get off your knees! You're blowing the game. Or Hey ref does your wife know you're out here screwing us?

Madison Square Garden, Joe Louis Arena in Detroit and the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia are usually mentioned as some of the toughest arenas to play in around the NHL. But the Devils have always considered the RBC Center a challenge.

"For some reason we don't have a great history of playing well here," Jay Pandolfo said. "I think we have to find a way to play real simple road hockey."

Scott Gomez said Carolina fans are underrated.

"It's a hard building to play in," he said. "Hockey fans don't get to hear about it or see it. The Hurricanes play well at home. They really feed off the crowd."

Expect a war out there tonight everyone. The first ten minutes of the game will tell you a lot about our Canes. If they continue to push the puck through NJ defense like they did Saturday, then it will be another long day for NJ. Expect a lot of hard hits and some emotion from the boys on both sides.

I am hoping that Jersey will be very emotional and that this will help them right back in the box. All their discipline went right out the window so I am hoping we can score early and the same thing will happen. Brodeur will probably be wearing "illegal" pads to keep that puck out tonight.

Expect a war out there tonight everyone.

I disagree about war breaking out - if New Jersey has any sense at all. And if it does then we will have the advantage.New Jersey has learned some respect for our power play I do believe after we went 5 for 8 on Saturday. Over-aggressiveness is gonna get you in the box and that means the power play is switched on.

I hope they do play Colin White. They can bring anybody they want to the party - he's groin injured and cannot skate and if he comes in wrestling that means power play as well.

Tee it up.

As far as White, he has skated in practices but from what I've heard/read is another game time decision. I'd love for another game like the first one but I expect the Devils will come out with a different work ethic tonight, I still think the Canes take 'em.

Let's go CANES.

Small note from the New York Post ... thought it was fun:

'Canes D Mike Commodore, a former Devil, remembered his NHL debut with New Jersey. "I had a bit of a goatee. Lou [Lamoriello] called me in his office and said 'You're going to be in the lineup, under one condition. You have to get a haircut and a shave.' First thing I did was find a barber. They run a tight ship. You can't make any complaints about it. It works. I don't know if it's necessary, but whatever he does, it works."

Hi everyone, I just registered so I could talk some hockey with you guys.

Well, the Canes whipped us pretty solidly, historically actually, in game 1. I just don't think the Devs were anticipating or prepared to play at that level in game 1 having breezed through the first round. I expected this series to be tough as your team is much, much better than the rags. Also, it seems our two teams are developing a little bit of a rivalry in the playoffs. I think the Devils will play better tonight so I think this game will close. I don't think White will play if he is not 100% because with a groin injury, re-aggrevating it will cause him to miss even more time. The faceoffs and the passing of the Canes on the pp made the Devils look like they were standing around. I was surprised by that since the Devils are generally good on the pk. I expect the Devils will be better on the pk tonight and their pp has been really streaky all season so perhaps they'll actually get a shot on goal tonight. I must say I'm impressed with the way your team has handled itself so far. It has been very professional and its obvious they are well coached.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and post some of my thoughts.

welcome :)

there's been a rivalry for a few years actually, but as with any two teams, each time they meet up in the playoffs it gets a little stronger. I'm sure the Devils not only want retribution from Sat's game.... but also from the '02 Series. no doubt most of them remember it.

I expected their pk to be much better too... then again, the whole game was pretty crappy for them... wouldn't have made much sense if pk was clicking but nothing else was. heh

I think tonight will be a much different game.

Then again, I thought the Avs might've showed up for game 2 as well. ;)

I do like that we've met the Devils in the playoffs now for the 3rd time in 5 seasons. A lot of faces have changed (Francis, Stevens, Holik, Niedermeyer, Irbe, Weekes, O'Neill, Kapanen, etc) but there is certainly enough familiarity there to call it a rivalry at this point. I certainly enjoy the Devils games, because let's face it it's set to be a good challenging game because the Devils have been good for quite a long time.

Maybe I'm drinking the kool-aid here, but if we keep the pace and intensity up, keep the turnovers down, keep possession, keep throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the net, keep feeding Cam whatever it is that we're feeding him... I like our chances tonight. The ice was tilted so far on Saturday, I don't think it can come all the way back to even so soon. I do think it will be a helluvalot closer than 6-0, and probably a very, very hard-fought game, and maybe even the Devils scratch enough to get some momentum going back to Jersey -- but not the win, not tonight. In other words, just worrying about the things that we can control we can keep this game. It's our game. The Devils can play a better PK, Marty can be better, etc, but if we play our game...

I think he likes the attention since apparently from news stories - she's the only one talking to him! He was skating by himself at practice again...no more roughhousing and playing with Cam from the team. Thanks for the hospitality. Yeah I definitely like the playoff history that is developing between our teams. I remember back in 2001 when we were up 3-0 and I thought it would be a sweep, your team showed a lot of character coming back and taking the series to 6 games. I personally believe that those two extra games probably cost us the cup that year cause we had won it the year before and all those games add up over 2 seasons. I'm not sure how much 2002 is in the minds of the Devils. That team just lacked offense and Weekes played out of his mind against us. Can't complain cause the following season was another cup.

Definitely one of the defining moments for every Canes fan is the game 6 standing ovation we gave our team in 2001, even though we were being eliminated. Heart, character -- those are definitely the things we appreciate the most, probably no different than 29 other NHL team's fans.

Funny how the Devils started in Kansas City as the Scouts then moved to Colorado as the Rockies, and then ended up in NJ. They didn't do well in the other two places and after they left, Colorado got a hockey team and now the Penguins might move to Kansas City.

Where did this kid Ward come from? I know you guys drafted him but was he this good in the regular season and if so, why was Gerber playing and not him?

Caniac
05-08-2006, 04:50 PM
Ward was pretty good for a rook in the few games he played. He won a few, he lost a few.

But he has come on like gangbusters in the playoffs. Gerber was a better goalie throughout the regular season, and he may be a better one now that he's gotten over his stomach virus, but until Cam cools off, he knows the drill.

Bench city.

Well, hopefully for you guys this won't be a Giguere-like situation. Its still so funny to me how he won the Conn Smythe and isn't even starting now. It was all a result of those matresses he used as pads.

goalie33
05-08-2006, 04:53 PM
Cam was great at the beginning of the regular season and then began to wane a bit. Gerber played more because Gerber was outstanding in the regular season. With that said, Ward has always been a very solid playoff performer, both in the WHL/CHL and the AHL. He's always been good in pressure situations, too: he got a shutout in his first ever major junior start.

Guyute
05-08-2006, 04:53 PM
he's been pretty stellar in our system. think most of us have been trying to patiently wait for his rise. nobody thought he'd carry a club his first year up. and Gerbs played Quite well (we did finish with 112 points, so it's not like Gerber was junk and Ward needed to carry us)

in fact, there was quite a buzz around this place with people thinking he wasn't going to hack being a regular backup, and perhaps we should pickup a Vet to take that spot, and let him get a little more seasoned in Lowell.

but, he played pretty well at points during the season. then not so well some times. I think like many goalies he really needs regular work. his best games have been runs. sit him for 8 games or so and that game back is a bit of a crapshoot.

so far from what I've seen though... he's not your average rookie. :)

OH OH LEMME ANSWER!!!

Cam came from the WHL, Red Deer to be exact.
I, being a STH for an opposing WHL team, would grit my teeth and hide under my seat anytime we had to play against him.
We used to call him The Wall (I kid you not).
I spent 4 years dreading hearing his name, and now worship the ice he skates on.
I was pretty happy, honestly, about that one little fact when Doug got traded to Carolina.

There was a guy on the AFtermath who admitted to being one of the ones that left early - he said that he was outside the doors when this roar came up that sounded like a bomb went off. About a thousand people in the parking lot all ran for the west entrance doors. The poor staff person at the door let them all back in telling her supervisor she wasnt going to be the one to stop them.

UNBELIEVABLE. I'm deaf, hoarse and still shaking! ahhhh! Eric's goal sent that place insane...Everyone was jumping and high fiving...CRAZY...Seeing everyone run back in was hilarious...the guy on the aftermath said from the parking lot it sounded like a bomb went off in the RBCC! It was so loud! One, if not the best game ever. And the parking lot after...haven't heard that much yelling and beeping since '02. We were stuck in Carter-Finley for about 30 minutes and the screaming never stopped died. Awesome... :D

Wasn't Eric the one who got the last second goal the last time we played in the devils in the regular season?! And Wallin...as the guy on the aftermath said, "Who needs Gretzky? We got Nic!"

My ears are still ringing from the explosionss after the tying goal then the winning goal. That place got airport loud.

Chuck K and John Forslund were talking about how they had some issues with the OLN crew on Saturday and were asking people to listen to the games online rather than watch them on OLN for the duration of the season. Apparently they didn't appreciate our play-by-play boys' enthusiasm.

F*ck OLN.

As if they didn't have poor enough coverage during the entire season. I'm so sick and tired of all the blabbing during gameplay and coming back to the camera AFTER the faceoff.

ANYWAY.... I wish I could have been there... I'll be watching games 3 and 4 (and 5 if we need it) from Florida. Maybe I'll refrain from jinxing them by staying out of Raleigh. (the one game i came in for was the 6-5 OT loss to montreal)

The OLN crew doesn't do "play by play." They have scripted quotes, no (or minimal) knowledge of the teams and they aren't providing any information for Canes or Devils fans. I will turn down the sound and listen to Chuck next game. Other OLN gafs tonight... They said that Nic had his second career Playoff OT GWG and later during the San Jose game, they said that Staal had the game winner.

Classic game that gave those "leave the game early" folks their just due. Are ya happy SHC? :D

Nicky Wallin our record breaking overtime playoff game winner for all of the whaler/canes franchise history. Ya gotta love it. And you knew it was over once you saw all the spaaaaace between him and brodeur.

It was like he knew it was a goal and was enjoying the moment.. :D

I was nervous about the game intitially there was no Cam/Kam mojo
Kam was all set up early like at her spot when 3 10-12 year olds came down and pushed her out of the way. After we said something - they moved over a LITTLE - but it was too late. My little four year old won't let people be mean to her twice. So she wouldn't go near the boards again - spent the entire time in my lap (so we'll have to see how the photos came out).

Cam looked for her in her spot - but those kids were there - he came over 3 - count them 3 - times to find her and she tried each time - wanting so bad to go up - she'd jump out of my lap, but just couldn't quite make it because she'd look at those kids and slink back to my lap...I could've slapped them for ruining her night! She was so disappointed and made pitiful mewing noises until midway through the 1st period because she didn't get to wish Cam good luck.

I was so nervous the MOJO had been messed with...

Just watched the game....boy were we loud! Had to pause it for a minute and heard the OLN guys say something about the fans...no clue what though. You could hear the goal chant very well...which was started by my section, thank you very much. :D We had the high stick chant going during the Devil's review, but that one never caught on...and into the OT intermission, some guys caught the goal judge's attention and were trying to explain to the goal judge that it was a high stick, that they saw it and that he lied...all in fun of course. :D

Tough night for Devils fans...my brother went down to the bathroom between 3rd and the OT, amid all the people talking about how they had to run back in from the parking lot after hearing the roar, a man wearing a brodeur jersey was in line for the bathroom...all the 'Canes fans start singing "Happy Birthday YOU SUCK". They finish the entire song...the guy runs away...and the place erupts in cheers. Brodeur fans have it tough...can't even use the bathroom, huh?

Edited to add: Check out the Game night Wallpaper...It'll make ya smile!

What a freakin' game! I almost forgot I had to connect up to the office when I got home! Oops!

So that being done. WOOO HOOOOO.

I was so sad for Cam and the guys after that late goal, but then I saw the determination of Justin Williams following that face off - barreling down the ice and thought "he's not giving up" and then I heard a guy a few rows back just freak out cheering and I thought "he's not giving up either" and in the few seconds, it seemed like the crowd didn't give up and then BAM it went in. OMG!!!!

I wish one of the TV stations had video of the people filing out and then running back in. LMAO!

Props to the guy (Kevin?) who called the Aftermath and confess. I wonder what that sounded like.

And George from Garner cracked me up he was so excited. He said he felt like going home and drinking a keg!!

Nick - our Canes didn't get out played for 2 periods. The got outplayed in the 1st and steadily, STEADILY, took control of the game. 9 shots over the 2nd, 3rd, and OT periods.

What a memory!

My god. Can you ever top that? Unbelievable.

I'd hate to ever miss a goal but I'd give anything to have heard that building from the parking lot when Staal scored. I could feel the concrete under my feet vibrating again but I couldn't hear anything else.....there was so much sound it just all blended together into one big roar! My arms are sore from clapping and high-fiving everyone in site, I have no voice and my ears are ringing. Perfect evening. :D

I knew it, too. Just as Gomez was coming in for that goal I turned to Mr SHC to say "They're going to score and we deserve to lose" because it looked to me like they had just played for the OT at the other end of the ice. I felt like if they were going to drop the aggressive play that has been their bread and butter all year they shouldn't win the game anyway. But I just had this feeling. When people started filing out (and yes, I am VERY happy Art!! ;) ) I turned to Mr SHC again and said "Do you know how many times I've seen a game tied up with only 20 seconds to go?" And then you FELT that entire line on the ice. Staal, Stillman, Brindy, Williams, Cullen and Whitney. I felt them willing that goal. And it worked. I don't think I've ever screamed so loud in my life.

And you KNEW karma would not allow that goal to be taken away from Wallin.

God, this team is amazing. Absolutely amazing. I swear I can feel some magic forming here.

Who cares about how bad the OLN guys were. WE WON!! And yea the Goal! Goal! Goal! chant came through loud and clear and I was yelling along up here in PA.

Also I was watching post game on MSG and they were talking about the "Unlikely hero" in OT. I guess they didnt watch us in 02. He has 3 Playoff goals, all 3 in OT.

Oh and as long as we are whining about announcers the guys on MSG were talking about how we always dive. They need to shut up and quit their whining.

BTW: if you get MSG or FSNy they have Hockey Night in NY on at 1am, its biased as hell but still some good interviews.

Also I'm really surprised they let people back in after the Staal goal. Although I can tell you not one of those people will ever leave a game early again.
