John & Tripp will be back- they'll black out OLN locally.
As the cliche goes, the toughest one to win is the last one, so let's get this taken care of. Give them no more signs of life.

This one's done, and they'll get good vibes from the folks at the airport, and we'll get to see a series clinched at HOME.

I wouldn't give the game to the Canes just yet. The Devils were that good today. And the Canes didn't look great. The Canes have got to come out and score early. Make them play catch up (or ketchup ;) ). If the Devil's squad I saw today comes in for the rest of the games...we could be in for a fight.
With all that said...Let's go Canes. Finish them off Sunday night. Please? Pretty Please?

As for the fans...time for us to regain our title as 'the loudest house'...let's show everyone that Edmonton's crowd ain't got nothing on us! :D I'm thinking a "whatever it takes" chant would be pretty sweet.

I had no expectations for a sweep. Most teams facing elimination do not go gentle into that good night. The Devils played like they knew they had to. Too bad for them they didn't figure it out sooner! :D
Anyway, I'm looking forward to (hopefully) seeing a handshake line at *checks clock* tonight's game. The 'Canes didn't let the Moms down last go 'round, so I expect nothing short of stellar from all of them.
And how cool is it that I have no worries no matter who starts in goal for us?

I was just wondering what you guys thought about Ward getting pulled so early. I know he had given up four goals on 17 shots or whatever but two of them were lucky bounces. The other two I guess he could have stopped but it happens sometimes. I just think it was too soon to jank him, personally. Also, your coach didn't really give him a great boost of confidence after the game. I bring this up here because I think Ward definately needs to start for you guys tonight. He is the guy that brought you here and within one game of eliminating the Devils and I don't understand why Lavi would even say "no comment" when asked about it. Anyway, I think tonight's game will be a good one as I'm sure you're team will come out firing. I just hope the Devils weather the storm without being down in a huge hole to start the game.

It has always been Laviolette's practice to be very tight lipped about his line-up, especially the goalies. It doesn't really have anything to do with Cam. I'm sure he spoke to him one on one. I think it was good timing to pull Ward out when he did. He really had no chance on at least two of those goals, but you do want to protect his confidence (given his youth).

.... and given the back-to-back games, with the lost cause Saturday, it gives him more rest for today
nccanes
05-14-2006, 11:39 AM
Well, since we aren't privy to what conversations Laviolette had with Ward following pulling him, or one the plane, we're all speculating.
Having said that, Laviolette knew there was going to be a game 5 (barring a miracle) and that it was coming 24 hours later. I think it was a wake up call to the guys in front of him as much as anything related to Cam. I think it was also an opportunity to get Gerber back in net and see some shots - and be able to gauge his form and game-readiness after 2 weeks off.
I think we'll see Cam today, but I guess we'll find out in about 5 hours.

I see your points. I was just thinking that Ward won 7 straight, which to me means he should have the starting job locked up the rest of the way unless he has 2 or more bad games in a row. I also think that pulling a young goalie really early in a playoff game and then saying "no comment" when asked if he would be the starter for game 5 can have as much or more of a negative impact on his confidence than leaving him in there for even one more goal against. Remember that a young guy like him needs to experience everything to make him better prepared for the years ahead. Anyway, I happen to think he'll be fine but we'll see. Just wanted to get your thoughts.
nccanes
05-14-2006, 11:47 AM
The "no comment" is SOP for Laviolette. I think the only time he's strayed from that all season was after the Canes clinched Round 1.

McGoo-Goo Cluster may be okay, as I don't think he'll let the PIMs favor too heavily on one side of the ice. One thing about him, if one team gets a 5-3, the other will get one sooner or later. Haven't seen him much this year, but he may help keep the game in check. (This is the wishful thinking part of my brain speaking, and that part has been drinking rather heavily.)
Leggo, on the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing meet with...say, a freakish zamboni accident.

Oh man I'm nervous. I'm nervous because the Devils are on a role and they were throwing our players around everywhere yesterday and I hope the guys will be strong. It said this morning in the N&O that Bret Hedican didn't play in the final 90 seconds of the game after taking a shot in the leg. I haven't heard anything about Brind'Amour since some of you who were at the airport said he was limping pretty badly. I can't take all the nervousness anymore.

Cam has plenty of playoff experience, albeit not at the NHL level. I'll admit to not being familiar with the ins and outs of his playoff records in the WHL, but I think between his demeanor during the game and his familiarity with Lavi's protocol, there are no damaged feelings.
Personally, when the third goal went in, I turned to my dad and said that if there was another, or a quick/marginal one in the second, Gerber should go in. It was obvious at that point that Cam wasn't doing much wrong, but that he just wasn't going to get lucky yesterday.
I'm a fan of changing goaltenders when something like that becomes obvious. Marty was obviously frustrated in Game 1, and it showed double after goal number six, when he pulled himself because Lou hadn't. That incident, though less tumultuous, brings to mind one of the most infamous non-yanks in memory, the regular season Roy/Tremblay debacle that led to a Stanley Cup for the Colorado Avalanche.
There's really nothing to gain in letting him stay in and get shelled, and shake his confidence. Better to let him sit and rest and refocus for the next game. Plus, like I asked yesterday to someone with a little better view than I had, I'm not sure if they were playing hockey or rugby  Hopefully they remember to peel the target off the back of Kevyn's helmet before the game tonight.

Tornado watch for just about all of NC until 10pm.
one-inch size hail in FV recently. some bright purples on the radar. more storm I've seen in our area in a while (radar-wise anyway).

yeah, at least quarter-sized hail here... started Just as I was backing the car into the garage (so I could load cooler in the garage if it was raining).
stuff was coming down so hard and was so big I was looking for dents. couldn't close the garage door because the hail kept breaking the beam. had to grab the chain and yank it down manually, while getting Drilled. would bet I'll have some nice bruises on my legs later.
of course, as with any game day, we need Cole to get a nice full nap so he can make it through the game. he went out at 2pm. just an hour later, it sounds like 300 people are throwing rocks at hour house. needless to say he got up. /sigh.

Ohh, the weather has me in a fighting mood.
*Singing Garth Brooks 'The Thunder Rolls'*
Six thirty in the evening
Not a Devils fan in sight
The city's lookin' like a battlestage
Ready for the fight
Raindrops on the windshield,
There's a storm moving in.
They’re heading into a fifth game
That never should have been.
And the thunder rolls.
And the thunder rolls.
Every car flag is flying
Across the RBC parking lot
Everyone is holding their breath
Stomachs in a knot.
Relying on the Captain
Led by the Kid
Prayin' that the Superstar
Will put the Devils on a skid
And the thunder rolls.
And the thunder rolls.
(Chorus)
The thunder rolls
And the Hurricane strikes.
Another playoff game
After a sleepless night,
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in our hearts
The thunder rolls.
We’re waitin' in the stands
Til the warriors arrive
The Battle between Good and Bad
And only the strong survive
Through all the wind and rain
A strange new fever grows
And the lightnin' flashes in their eyes
And the Hurricanes all know
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls
*chorus*
The game gets underway
The crowd holds its breath
Smashing in the corners
The Devils season falls to its death
There is another day waiting
Another fight to win
The Sabres are standing ready
And the next battle begins
(yes, I'm bored...)

Well you guys played another great game. Your arena is a house of horrors for us. I wish the Devils would have put up a better fight in this game but credit your team for that as well. They turned it up and outworked and outhustled the Devils but most importantly, they were sharper. All these things are the mark of a good team and the better team definitely won this series. My only little consolation was that they won big when I went to the game on Saturday. I wanted to wish you guys luck (even though I will be rooting for Buffalo, sorry but I really hate your team now). This is a great team you guys have and I only hope that its continued success will help grow the game of hockey in non-traditional hockey markets. I might come back now and again and post some of my thoughts, if you guys don't mind. I'd also like to thank you for your hospitalities. Cheers.

No problem. Just tired of the whole, 'Carolina has a hockey team?' vibe. A lot of us are former Northerners who followed Northern teams.
It's great to bring in interest to non-hockey markets. It's good for the game. If we keep an elite number, hockey won't survive. We need these 'border' teams to generate interest. Look what TB did. Look what the CA teams are doing.

Game 2 and 3 were hard fought against an awesome Devils team that could have easily gone the other way.

Amen to that! Phew, it was tough, even in 5 games. I wonder if that run before running into the CamWall wore them out?
That Cam Jannsen (wasn't that a children's lit series???) has all the potential of being a great agitator down the road. And if they make some key signings, they'll ride Brodeur right back to the playoffs again.

WOO! Just got back from the game...had to stop for a victory milkshake. :D What a game. 1st period wasn't our best, but we dominated the 2nd and 3rd. Everyone played good...especially Ladd and LaRose.
And the crowd was awesome! My ears are ringing and my throat is sore...kudos to the fans who took the time to make the big signs that said something like "if you can still speak after you have left the arena you are a failure as a caniac" and held them at the entrances. Loved the "We want Buffalo" chant as well...and seeing Erik Cole without the neck brace was very nice. What was with the mini blackout? The video goal judges quick shut the window and were peering out like the world was coming to an end!

Talk about a comeback for our little goalie that could. If we took away the first 57 seconds of the game, the little guy would have had a shut out. And the defense holding them to so few shots in the second and third?
I'm so hoarse. :spin:

wooohooo... that's what I like to see! My ears are still ringing, my throat hurts, and friends could see me high 5'ing everyone from the back row in the upper level at the other end of the rink! :)
We won in spite of the refs being on NJ's payroll this evening... the officiating has been terrible all around since the playoffs started... but Magoo and Lego Blockhead need to sit and never see an NHL ice surface again... Were they ever terrible this evening... even the linesmen were awful.... they were trying to give NJ the advantage by allowing them to dictate things in the face off circle, couldn't get out of their own way again and again...
On to Buffalo... that's gonna be one heck of a series.... we need to keep up the speed to play with Buffalo....

wow what an amazing game, ive been a fan for 6 years and that was my first playoff game, that "bring on buffalo" chant was amazing except now i have no voice :) plus, that street hockey outside was amazing, this little 11 yr old was like a little doug weight the way he would pass the puck around. have a great night guys, BRING ON BUFFALO!

On the CH.com boards someone reported that CBC just said the report from the lockerroom was that Stillman had twisted his knee a bit, but should be ok for Buffalo...anyone else hear anything?
And anyone see Don Cherry in the robe?? I'm dying to see that.

"bring on buffalo" was loud and clear on the telecast.
i think back to the "goal" chant of game 2 and it rhymes with cole. just a subliminal message for those of you who like to start cheers and chants. other than that, the "goal" chant just seems like great mojo. it should be brought out more often, like when we want/need a goal or we want to salute cole. tomahawk chop/goal signal and all.
what a game.

Just Freakin AWESOME!!! Just getting home and I am so happy that I didn't have to fly out tonight and was able to see history and a beat-down, even the refs couldn't pull it out for NJ. (They should have had sticks, seemed like we were on a 2-man disadvantage for the first two periods.)
Great comeback from last night, lots of energy and lots of positives (other that Cory, hopefully he'll be back). Just freakin WOW!!! I'm just amazed how we were down 11-5 SOG's after the 1st and late in the 3rd we had a 31-18 SOG advantage.
Buffalo will be a test, but looking forward to a good series. BRING ON BUFFALO...GO CANES!!!

FANTASTIC GAME.
Awesome job by all the Canes to limit the Devils to SEVEN shots in the last forty minutes.
The Devils' goal came from the luckiest bounce of the entire series, and as soon as Cam gloved the rebound shot a minute later, I knew he was good to go.
The passing on the Stillman goal was heavenly, and Weight's no-look to the Wizard was just as good.
The Devils flat out quit with five minutes to go.
BTW, the power didn't go out...I think Pete Soto was jumping around too much and hit the wrong button, because the little shades that covered the lights rotated down out of nowhere; the lights were on the entire time.

Total neutral and defensive zone domination for 2 periods. Loved it.

From the Yahoo! recap:
Referee Mike Leggo made an interesting call late in the first period, stopping play even though the puck was loose beside Brodeur. The goalie was prone on his back, and Cullen was furiously poking at the puck when the whistle blew.
So, "interesting" is the PC equivalent of "boneheaded"?

I didn't think anything could top Monday night but man, this may have. I am amazed at the way this team is playing. I know some people thought they looked like crap in the first. I thought they were awesome, considering. NJ was coming HARD, we had the refs tilting the ice in their direction like nothing I've ever seen, and still, we came out tied at 1-1. That was a total victory for this team, IMO. And then we took over in the second and third.
Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
I sure hope there is nothing serious wrong with Stillman's knee. That would be one helluva loss.
God, I love this team.

And the crowd was awesome! My ears are ringing and my throat is sore...
My wife asked me in the car, "Did it seem as loud as it did the other night?" She had to ask me twice, since I hadn't heard her.
Well if Mother Nature had anything to say about tonight's game, I think the storms today were as good an indication that we'd get the win as any.
Fun: Explaining hail to a 2 year old.
Not Fun: Trying to get off the porch and to the car with a 2-year-old in a hail storm.

SHC and CL have already heard my story, but I decided during the first intermission to see about getting my "plain" home red sweater personalized. The jersey story across from the Deck hooked me up - I literally, was able to hit the bathroom, then deposit my jersey with them, and retreive it before the 2nd period began. My first ever personalized jersey.
Oh - whose name did I get you ask? None other than Cory Stillman #61 who scored the game winning goal just a few moments later. Woo hoo.
SoCal, did you see me "displaying" it for you in my typical post-game dance?
Wonderful moment to witness. Crowd was awesome - they were into every face off, every touch of the puck it seemed.
Amazing. :D

The only let-down for me is that I didn't get back to the auction booth in time to up my bid on the 'Signed and Framed 2003-2004 Player Card Proof Sheet'
Ended up being the 2nd highest bidder (if you discount the person who didn't leave their phone number between my bid of $1200 and the winning bid of $1500)
Gotta remember to either bid WAY higher than the previous bid, or get there before the 2nd intermission hits!

That auction got out of hand. People blocking a sheet to prevent more bidders or bid offs as the time ticked down. Savages. (Don't worry, I was going for the bulls jersey, not the game-worn Wallin. He's safe.) I had the highest bid with 30 seconds left then the savages wrote in their bids. That's ok it's charity and I wasn't much in the mood to bid off.

In an intermission! A bathroom break, drop the jersey off, a beer stop, and picked it up. Managed to get back to my seat by the first stoppage in the 2nd.
They don't do stitching there - they just iron on the numbers and nameplates. It looks fine. I'll show it off at Game 1 of the ECF (oh, I mean PGEs). ;)

Ward was like Aaryn Meeting Ronnie Francis in a chris Farley esque way. He had this goofy smile and didn't know how to pat or hug his idol, or ask him for his autograph. Marty's body language said it all. "Get me outta here".
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought Marty was just trying to get away.

Ok, does this seem perceived wrong on my part - if so lemme know cause I sure hope so. I was kinda disappointed that Marty patted Cam on the back and barely looked him in the eye at the end. Cam has been waiting for this moment for so long, that I just thought maybe Cam deserved a few more words or at least a look in the eye...
Cam seemed to seem pretty psyched up for it, and Marty..well, I dunno..it just maybe was the capper to all his griping this series that ticked me off.

Something else... don't know if it's planned for tomorrow's edition or farther in the future, but I was interviewed by a writer from The News and Observer before the game today about my lucky undies, that lots of us have pieces of since Game #2 against the Canadiens. Look for it!
