Over in the basketball world, that team with the guy that's real good or something scored a lot of points and they won against that Kidd. They take a one game lead in a series of some kind where they have to win a few more games or something. That other team hasn't scored more "baskets" or whatever than the team they've played in the final four (correct term even though there's only two teams left??) 5 games running now dating back to like 6 months ago (maybe a year) when they played that big tall guy with the hurt toe.

The awesome one is the San Antonio Spurs, and former Wake Forest great, Tim Duncan, with 32 points, 20 rebounds, 7 blocks and 6 assists in last night's game. He's also been named the 2002-2003 NBA MVP. And, he's a super nice person to boot. So, congratulations, Mr. Duncan!!!

Let me preface with saying I have no idea about any of this and who these people are.. I wouldn't even know basketball finals were on if Phish wasn't singing the national anthem at one of the games.. so if this article is bad, don't blame me ;) Thought you might like it though CanesFever:

Duncan the new Elvis
By BILL HARRIS, Toronto Sun
SAN ANTONIO -- It's tough to know from what source Tim Duncan drew his inspiration last night. Maybe it was the presence of legendary ABA alumni Julius (Dr. J) Erving and George (The Ice Man) Gervin.
Maybe it was the presence of the George W. Bush-bashin' Dixie Chicks in the stands.
Or maybe it was the presence of the daughter of the king of rock and roll, Lisa Marie Presley, who performed at halftime.
Well, Elvis Presley may have left the building for good 26 years ago, but there's no doubt who the reigning king of basketball is. Duncan took what had been a close game by the throat in the third quarter and his San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 101-89 victory over the New Jersey Nets in Game 1 of the NBA final before a sellout crowd of 18,797 at the SBC Center.
Duncan's numbers were staggering. He racked up 32 points, 20 rebounds, seven blocks and six assists. Duncan is only 27 years old, but it was like a bleedin' father-son game.
Duncan, who isn't exactly the most demonstrative guy, showed slightly more emotion than usual in the second half.
"What's not to be excited about?" Duncan said afterward in the most flat, monotone voice you can imagine. He unintentionally drew guffaws from reporters.
"I don't care about my image," Duncan added with a smile. "Whatever you guys think. You write something good."
How could anyone do otherwise?
Prickly Nets forward Kenyon Martin, who led New Jersey with 21 points, had to keep his temper in check when he was asked a series of questions about Duncan's dominating performance.
"Can I leave?" a glaring Martin said to an NBA official in the post-game interview room.
No, Kenyon, you can't. You'll have to face Duncan in Game 2 tomorrow night, too, and at least twice more after that.
The Nets, who were rusty coming off a lengthy layoff, suddenly have some regrouping to do. The loss was their first since the opening round of the post-season and they have a tendency to start pointing fingers at each other when things don't go well.
"I don't know if our game plan (to guard Duncan) will work or not," Nets coach Byron Scott said, obviously scolding his players for a lack of execution. "I'd like to try it. We didn't do the things we talked about doing."
Well, duh.
The Nets had been hoping to turn the first game of this best-of-seven series into the inaugural episode of No Fear Factor, intent as they were to prove they weren't as scared of San Antonio as they had been of the Los Angeles Lakers in the final a year ago. In that sense, it was a more important game statement-wise for the visitors than it was for the home side.
But Duncan, the two-time reigning NBA most valuable player, erupted for 13 points in the pivotal third quarter. The game had been tied at the half, but San Antonio won the third quarter 32-17.
"They started the third quarter like they were down by 10 points and we started it like we were up by 10 points," Scott said.
Five times previously in the playoffs the Spurs had blown double-digit leads and lost, and the Nets provided a slight scare with a little surge early in the fourth quarter. New Jersey cut the deficit to nine points late in the game, but could get no closer.
Besides Duncan, four other Spurs scored in double-figures. The only ex-Raptor in the series, veteran Spurs centre Kevin Willis, never got off the bench.
The Nets' trademark fast break was ineffective all night. Their best player, guard Jason Kidd, had a good statistical game at first glance (10 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds) but he shot a lousy 4-for-17 from the field and was not at his dominating best.
"(The Spurs) are the best team in the NBA," Kidd said. "They have the MVP and he played like that."
Is there any way to stop Duncan?
"Send him to the old arena, the Alamodome, while we play here," Kidd said.
The Nets said similar things last June in reference to Lakers centre Shaquille O'Neal, who led L.A. to a four-game sweep of New Jersey.
The early returns suggest Duncan has replaced Shaq in the role of basketball's Elvis.

Well, unfortunately the ratings are better and the ad revenue is better. One can hardly blame them.
I heard on Rome is Burning that that Arena Football has garnered better ratings than the NHL. That sucks.

Anyone catch the Nets "performance" in the fourth quarter? It was absolutely painful to watch. They are up by 7 and let the Spurs go on a 19-0 points run to put the game away. The Nets looked like an average high school basketball team during that span unable to do anything at all, airballing, not getting shots off, throwing the ball, away, etc.
That's not gonna win them championships.
Could they be the next Buffalo Bills?
That being said, I'm sorry they couldn't get it done. I guess it's nice Robinson went out on top though. Too bad Oates and Thomas couldn't have done the same...

Same here...I really don't care much for the NBA, but I do like David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Duncan and Randolph Childress were the reason I found myself cheering for Wake Forest quite a bit a few years ago. Always good to see good guys like Duncan and Robinson win...
