Report: LeClair asked to waive no-trade

TSN.ca Staff

6/6/2003

The Philadelphia Flyers have reportedly asked forward John LeClair to waive his no-trade clause, something that the player and his agent are considering.

The New York Post quotes a "well-connected NHL source" who says the Flyers have approached the New York Rangers about a possible deal for LeClair. Flyers GM Bob Clarke is even willing to absorb a significant share of the $27-million left on LeClair's contract over the next three years.

The newspaper reports that Clarke has also spoken with at least two other teams concerning LeClair but any subsequent deal would be contingent upon how much of the current contract the Flyers are willing to swallow.

LeClair, who teamed with Rangers forward Eric Lindros and Mikael Renberg to form the Legion of Doom in Philadelphia, missed the majority of this past season with shoulder problems. He had just 18 goals in 35 games and only counted two goals in 13 playoff games.

Clarke has already said that several veterans will see their playing time decreased next season as the team attempts to incorporate more youth into the lineup

The Rangers???

Yeah I know...I always cannot help but question why (seemingly) every player and their cousin wants to play for those guys. Yes, the Rangers are practically an all-star team and such, but they're an all-star team that has failed chemistry class countless times and still does that...and many wonder why the Rangers haven't gotten a Cup since '94.

can't say I'm surprised. Didn't see Johnny Vermont sticking around while Bobby wants to drop the vet's avg ice time from 22 to something closer to 10. ugh.

get that man outta office... NOW.

Sure do miss the Legion of Doom.

Sure do miss the Legion of Doom.

Sure would hate to see it reform in NY.

$27 million huh? I guess the Rangers are the only ones who could/would take even part of that on. Wish he came a little cheaper.....I'd love to have him here.

Doubt that will happen. From all reports, the Blueshirts are looking to move Lindros.

Tell me about it!!! How's this: Irbe/Tanabe for Leclair! That's fair, right?

OOOOOOOO! that just gave me goosebumps! But I have ask, would we be giving up 2 liabilities for another one? He has seemed to have spent a lot of time in the last couple years getting over injuries. And why does Clarke keep wanting to send his player to the Rangers?

Philadelphia Flyers forward John LeClair has reportedly agreed to waive his no-trade clause, with some restrictions.

The Philadelphia Daily News quotes several team sources who say LeClair would agree to a trade if it involved the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings or Dallas Stars.

LeClair has three years left on a five year deal which guarantees him $9-million a season, which would severely limit his trade options unless he agreed to restructure the deal or the Flyers pay a good portion of his salary.

"I'm not going to say anything about it," LeClair tells the Daily News. "This will all be worked out in the next couple of weeks."

Flyers general manager Bob Clarke denied last week that the team has asked LeClair to waive his no-trade clause or that he has already spoken to the Rangers about a possible deal.

Clarke has already said that some of the team's veteran players will be asked to take a decreased role next season in an attempt to inject some younger players into the lineup

Oh now this is just stupid silly. Why don't we just give all the players to the Rangers? Would it make the Rangers happy if the rest of the league just let them win the cup one year or something? Would that shut them the heck up? Nah, I guess not. Tommy mentioned this to me a little while back but wouldn't it be hilarious if the year following a salary cap agreement, with a very, very stripped down team, the Rangers won the cup?

The Rangers are even willing to pay these obscene salaries! As has been said, the more spent, the worse they do! Scary thought! Perhaps they'll hit around 200 million after the trade deadline next season with them missing the playoffs but the Canes making it. How sweet that would be. I hope the Canes at least beat the Rangers once next year though...

Until the Rangers ever learn/relearn the concept of having a team chemistry, I'll be very surprised to see them hoist the Cup. Perhaps a salary cap will force the Rangers to let go of some, if not most of their more primadonna members, therefore possibly earning them an actual "team". As much as I can't stand the Devils and Wings, they at least have a decent team chemistry going for them...hence why they've won the Cup in recent years and times.

You and me Folgers, you and me. As we know, there were plenty of things that went bad this season, but there was also some good...and how I wish beating the Rangers at least once was among that good. I don't know what burns me up more about the Rangers this season, how their sweeping the Canes was the first time in almost ten years OR how one of the Ranjerks "accidentally" backed into Ronnie with his stick causing a horrible face/jaw injury OR how they ruined the Caniacs' New Year's Eve festivities. Just like the Devils, I look forward to seeing the Canes kick some Ranger arse next season...

Ain't that the truth?? They spend this astronomical amount of $$$ and then they never accomplish anything....and that would be so sweet to beath them and make the playoffs as our guys wave to them as they watch from the paying seats!! :D ;)

While I hope it doesn't come down to the Canes and Ranjerks vying for a number eight seed next season, if it did come down to that, it would indeed be sweet for the Canes to beat the Rangers in a deciding game at Madison Square Garden. I hate being mean like that, but hey, if the Canes had to pay a price for a Cup run in the form of a horribly unlucky season, I say the Rangers get to pay a price for sweeping the Canes, be it getting swept by the Canes or having the Canes knocking them out of the running for playoff seeding.

As you can tell, I love revenge... ;)

Please, we'll be a #1 seed next year! ;)

and I made this in November and you can tell the early standings didn't mean much, but always fun to see how payroll works out with winners in the end.

LECLAIR LEAVING? One of the biggest names on the move this weekend could be Flyers forward John LeClair.

A former 50-goal man who scored just 18 in 2002-03, the veteran is under contract for a team-high $9 million US a season for another three years, and the NHL club is looking to trade him to make room on its $57-million payroll for new acquisitions.

"I don't know where I'll be next year," said LeClair, who waived his no-trade clause, but only for certain teams -- Detroit, Dallas or the Rangers.
