Bowman 'intrigued' by Rangers post

A new candidate may have emerged to coach the New York Rangers.

Sources have told TSN that the Rangers have put out feelers to see if retired coaching great Scotty Bowman would have any interest in returning behind an NHL bench.

While no official contact between the Rangers and Bowman has been made, sources told TSN that Bowman is, at the very least, intrigued by the possibilities.

Whether a Bowman-to-New York scenario gathers any steam remains to be seen, but it is certainly a development well worth watching.

Until now, it was believed that Larry Robinson, a consultant with the New Jersey Devils was the leading contender for the job. There continues to be a lot of rumours about Mike Keenan’s future in Florida and as long that talk exists there continues to be speculation that Keenan could also somehow find his way back to New York.

Bowman began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before going to the Montreal Canadiens and leading them to five Stanley Cups in the 1970’s. He coached the Buffalo Sabres before taking over the Pittsburgh Penguins bench in 1991 following the passing of Bob Johnson. He led the Penguins to their second-straight Stanley Cup in 1992.

He became head coach of the Detroit Red Wings in 1994 taking them to the Stanley Cup Final in 1995. In 1997, Bowman led the Red Wings to their first Stanley Cup since 1955 and went on to guide them to two more championships, surpassing Toe Blake for most Stanley Cups (nine) won by a head coach.

Bowman retired following Detroit’s Stanley Cup win in 2002. He is the NHL record holder for most regular season wins and winning percentage.

I doubt this will happen, but if I were a Rangers fan I'd be, to quote Jethro Tull, "Praying til next Thursday to all the gods that you can count" that is does.

Scotty might be the only person with a strong enough personality to turn that bunch of bozos into a team that could fulfill it's potential.

He's probably one of the few that could, but he's 68 and not getting any younger. It will take more than a year or two to turn that team of overpaid primadonnas around.

OK so maybe because I can't see being able to retire ever that I just don't understand people who retire in seemingly good health with finances in order, that can't seem to stay retired!

could I please :D I would have no problem staying retired! Staying busy is one thing, having a stressful job is another. Wonder how Mrs. Bowman feels about it.........maybe it was her idea ;)

Bowman: No interest in Rangers

June 9, 2003

Scotty Bowman? The New York Rangers?

"I don't know where that started," Bowman said Sunday. "I have no interest at all."

Bowman-to-the-Rangers reports popped up in several places over the weekend.

Sportsnet posted on its Web site at 7:23 p.m. Saturday that Bowman had "expressed interest in the vacant head coaching position with the New York Rangers" and that Rangers management was "eagerly awaiting contact from the legendary coach."

TSN posted on its Web site Saturday that the Rangers had "put out feelers" to see if Bowman "would have any interest in returning behind an NHL bench" and that Bowman was "at the very least . . . intrigued by the possibilities."

Television analyst John Davidson brought up the subject Saturday night on CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada."

The New York Daily News reported Sunday that Bowman was "interested in meeting with (general manager) Glen Sather to discuss taking over as head coach of the Rangers" and that the Rangers were "expected to seek and get permission to speak with him in the next day or so."

The Daily News also said: "Bowman hasn't waited for that meeting to occur to begin researching the dysfunctional club he'd be directing. The Daily News has learned that Friday in Chicago, Bowman met for more than an hour with Yankees manager Joe Torre, who raved about the experience of coaching in New York. . . . Clearly, Bowman is intrigued. Virtually every person close to him who was at last night's Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals insisted the Rangers' job has been on Bowman's mind for months."

The reports' sourcing was vague, and none had a comment or even a no-comment from Bowman, who retired after the Red Wings won the 2002 Stanley Cup, remains a Wings consultant and will turn 70 on Sept. 18.

"If I was going to coach any team, I would have stayed with the Red Wings," Bowman said. "I'm perfectly happy doing what I'm doing. . . . I've coached my last game. Fortunately, we won it, and I can live happily ever after."

What about the meeting with Torre? "We weren't talking about hockey," said Bowman, a friend of Torre's. "We were talking about baseball."

Sather declined to comment through a spokesman Sunday. Wings general manager Ken Holland said the Rangers hadn't asked for permission to speak to Bowman. Asked if the Wings would grant the Rangers permission if asked, he said, "I'm not going to speculate. Speculation leads to more rumors."
