McCarty might test free agent waters
TSN.ca Staff

Darren McCarty and the Detroit Red Wings are reportedly far apart on contract talks, making it more than likely he will test the free agent market next month.
According to the Detroit News, the Red Wings have offered McCarty a three year deal worth $6-million.
While neither side is commenting on the financial details, the Red Wings want an answer before the July 1 deadine so that they can go on to Plan B if necessary.
"We're mulling our options at this point," his agent Pat Morris tells the newspaper. "You get a chance for free agency maybe once in a career. Darren brings a lot to the table. He would be a valuable addition to a contending team, or to a team nearing the playoffs with the experience of having been on a Stanley Cup champion."
Detroit GM Ken Holland has said he would like to re-sign McCarty but admits economics might not make that possible, especially with Sergei Fedorov, Jason Woolley and Steve Yzerman also seeking new contracts.
Talks with Fedorov are said to be moving along slowly while Yzerman is expected to take a paycut if he does return. Detroit have reportedly pegged Greg de Vries or Ken Klee as potential replacements for Woolley.

I heard Florida might be very interested in him.
He would make a nice addition to the Canes roster.

All Ladies Thread inclinations aside, me too. He's a hard-working, character player with a whole lot of personality. I think he'd be a great addition...but I won't get my hopes up.
If he does come here he may have a small contingency of us ladies meeting him at the airport to welcome him to the area! ;)

BTW, to keep this on-topic, McCarty's one of the few Wings I don't mind, and would like to see here.

Wings wave off McCarty proposal
By Ted Kulfan / The Detroit News
Thursday, June 19, 2003
DETROIT -- General Manager Holland said the Red Wings aren't interested in a contract proposal for right wing Darren McCarty that agent Pat Morris submitted last week.
McCarty is eligible for unrestricted free agency July 1.
The Wings have offered McCarty three contract proposals ranging from two to four years, Holland said.
Originally offering $2 million a season, the Wings have reportedly increased their offer to approximately $2.3 million.
Neither side is discussing specific financial details. Morris is believed to be asking for between $2.7 million and $3 million a season.
"We're offering something that will fit our salary structure," Holland said. "Obviously we'd like to have Darren back."
Morris said the sides are close in terms but aren't close financially.

Wings re-sign McCarty before deadline
TSN.ca Staff
6/30/2003
The Detroit Red Wings may not have contracts done with Sergei Fedorov and Steve Yzerman, but the vaunted "grind line" is back together for the coming season.
TSN has learned that veteran winger Darren McCarty has reached a contract agreement with Detroit, hours before he was to become an unrestricted free agent. The pact means that Detroit has veteran linemates McCarty, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby under contract for next season.
Sources told TSN that McCarty agreed to a four-year contract worth a total of 8.75 million dollars.
A second round pick of the Red Wings in 1992, McCarty scored 13 goals in 73 games this season. He has spent all 10 of his NHL seasons with the Red Wings, and has been part of their three Stanley Cup wins since 1997.

McCarty gets huge points in my book for this signing. He didn't just go to whatever team offered him the most money. Now I wish another teammate(or former teammate) would do the same. *cough*Fedorov*cough*

I guess this is flattering, but I can see why players enjoy their privacy here in Raleigh. Ron Francis didn't even have a gaggle of press outside his house after the little bump in negotiations last June.

Detroit Red Wings' Darren McCarty meets the media at his home in West Bloomfield, Mich., Tuesday, July 1, 2003. Being a Detroit Red Wing and his ties to the Metropolitan Detroit area meant more to McCarty than the money he could have made elsewhere. McCarty avoided becoming an unrestricted free agent by agreeing to a four-year deal worth a reported $8.75 million on Monday night to remain with the Red Wings, about an hour before he would have become a free agent.
