Flyers promote Ron Ryan to president

June 13, 2003
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Flyers promoted Ron Ryan to president on Friday.

The team's chief operating officer since 1991, Ryan will oversee all of the day-to-day operations of the Flyers, although general manager Bob Clarke will continue to make all the personnel decisions.

"Ron has been an important part of the Flyers organization for 15 years, and both Bob Clarke and I agreed that he has earned the opportunity to serve as president," said Ed Snider, chairman of Comcast-Spectacor, the Flyers' parent company. "The fact is, Ron has been responsible for our day-to-day operations for several years, and the title of president is one that he deserves."

Ryan was named executive vice president in 1988, and gradually assumed the management of all business and administrative aspects of the club.

"I have been privileged to work in a great organization for the last 15 years, and I am honored that the club has expressed such confidence in me," he said.

Ryan served as general manager of the New England Whalers from 1975-1977, was executive director of the World Hockey Association in 1978, and was president and general manager for SportsChannel New England before holding the same positions at SportsChannel Florida.

"Ron's a great executive, and we have a great working relationship," Ryan said. "He is also my friend, and I am glad to see him get the recognition he has earned."

Lombardi signs on with Flyers

You can strike Dean Lombardi's name from the list of potential candidates to become the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Lombardi, who was mentioned as an early candidate for the post, has accepted an offer from the Philadelphia Flyers to become their Western Conference pro scout.

Lombardi was fired as the general manager of the San Jose Sharks back in March and some might consider a scouting role to be a step down. But not Lombardi.

"I'm doing what I like to do best and that's watching players and assessing talent," he tells the San Jose Mercury News.

Lombardi also credits Flyers GM Bob Clarke with re-instilling the passion for working in hockey again. He added that he is looking forward to working for someone he has admired as both a player and executive as well as being part of a "very stable organization".
