I've been trying to start this game thread for 30 minutes...... this is the hardest one I've ever had to start. I guess, I'll just keep it simple:
C'mon guys! WE STILL BELIEVE!!! You worked so hard all year to get home ice advantage, so please make the most of this night.
WHATEVER IT TAKES!!
Puck drops at 8:00PM
LET'S GO 'CANES!!

It is a new day, and it will be a good one. I still believe in this team, and this is something they have dreamed about forever. Playing hockey on the pond when they were kids, pretending you are at home for game 7 of the SCF, well boys here you go. Time to make your dreams come true.....

With apologies to Coach V (who actually took the line from Vince Lombardi).

after a night of fitful sleep and craptastic dreams of oilers hoisting things that don't belong to them on our ice...
why game 7 will be different than game 6:
1. home ice.
2. cole's warm-up game is behind him.
3. joe getting stronger and nastier.
4. now the oilers will have their first game of being able to lose focus and think about the prize that awaits.
my whole body feels like i've been hit by a steamroller right now, won't lie. but there is some relief to this. monday night our team comes home, to our house, and the season is going to end with them being cascaded by cheers and thanks from a grateful crowd. that will be little solace to them if the Worst should happen but it's solace to me.
and we can do a hell of a lot better than our worst.

I hope they guys can shake off yesterdays game and be ready for tomorrow. I hope the crowds gonna be good tomorrow especially when Erik Cole takes the ice. I hope theres something for the fans to cheer about and so they can stay in the building and be happy instead of make dashing exits to there cars or if there at home and not change the channel. I still have alot of concerns, the Oilers have life now and it's gonna be a tough game. What has happend to Brind'Amour Lately he's like disappeared and so have all our other guys.

Maybe I'm just too stubborn and just can't fathom the unthinkable, but I would hope for the next day and half, we can table any 'consolation' type talk- i.e. it was a great season, we got this far, etc., etc., blah, blah, til the season is officially over. I just can't go there.
I feel better than I thought I would, waking up this morning- don't get me wrong, I still feel like I was run over by a steamroller, however, I think the roller didn't hit me nearly as hard as originally indicated; so it comes to this gang. We played all these months to have this opportunity, home ice, game 7, our crowd showing how it's done. So in my fitful sleep, I saw visions of our guys skating around the rink with the Cup over their heads, and in that dream, I also saw a team who is still the team we all cheered all season- never quit, never give up, and a team that thrives on adversity. Maybe last night wasn't "enough" adversity, so it was meant for them to come on home and do this.
Erik Cole will be a factor tommorow. I marvel at his sheer will , his determination and his heart. I believe our Captain will be the biggest factor as we now are hearing him being called out. I think Cole's partner in crime up til March 5th, Eric Staal will be a force- from what I've been told since I've not read any media accounts myself, some circles blame him for that Pisani goal in Game 5, so more storylines on redemption- Stillman has not been dubbed the silent assassin for nothing; he'll come to play. And guys who have been a little frustrated, weary, and I don't know what - Cullen, Whitney and Williams will all contribute. I don't know about Joe, I just don't see enough to believe he'll do anything tommorow. But he could surprise, and that is why they play the game.
All guts now- the cliche is there is no tommorow, and that's why it's a cliche. No way will this team, lose 3 games straight. just won't happen. The better team will win tommorow, . And it'll be the Canes. ;)

Our boys are finally in the position where it's The Last Game. No more trying to manufacture desperation. It's there. And possibly, this is what they've needed.
One chance to win the one thing you've wanted since first picking up that stick. 60 Minutes of play to write your name into history. One more shot to finish the season the only way it should be finished. On top.
May tomorrow night live in our minds and hearts as one of the greatest sporting moments ever witnessed.
I don't have a clue what to say in the last game thread of the season. I know this game will come down to who wants it most. To be in this position, Game 7 for one of the biggest prizes in sports history AND IT BE ON HOME ICE, a better story could not be written.
Play YOUR game guys for the full 60, hold your heads up high and the 19,000 of us in the stands will carry you through. I pray that God will let you guys win this thing for many, many reasons.
One last time for 05-06, GO CANES GO!!

Nobody cares how you get to 4 wins, just get there. Each team has won a shutout, a tight defensive game, and a game where one break made the difference and the other team could have easily have claimed victory.
Yes, I would have like to have wrappped this up in 4 games, 5 games or 6 games, but that has not happened. Sure, I would have liked to have won the last 2 games going into Game 7, but that has not happened.
Game 7, home ice, everything before this is forgotten. One game. Lace 'em up tight guys.

Yesterday I was bummed when the reality hit that we would have a game 7 and Mr.VandyCane would miss it because of his trip to Buffalo. We have come too far this year to give up now. I cannot even fathom it. But then my husband called and said they are getting up at the crack of dawn to make it back in time for the game! :D Game 7 wouldn't have been the same without him setting next to me. This has been an awesome season and I believe we will all WILL THEM to WIN!

All bets are off now...one game...winner take all. This means the Stanley cup could be decided on a good bounce, a "McGooism", a goalie on an off night...you name it! As fans, it will wrench at our heart, but that is the price one pays when two teams are so evenly matched. My curiousities for game 7:
-Can the Oilers keep focused and play well or will the first game at Lord Stanley's prize get them off their wheels?
-Cole looked great last night. Will this be a warmup game...or will it be kind of like when you work out for the first time in a while and everything gets sore the next day...I'm thinking he'll be good to go.
-The crowd, the faceoff advantage and the last line change...how much will earning home ice for game 7 pay off for these Canes.
-Was the Oiler PP a flash in the pan or did they find the seams they needed and can continue to click?
-Spacek was called for diving last night...will they continue to look to make those calls?
-Is the eight days off prior to this series going to give the Oilers the extra jump?
I'm envious of those who get to be at RBC tomorrow night...you get the watch the Stanley Cup being awarded regardless of who wins. You will obviously cheer on your Canes if they are victorious...and I know you'll be all class if the Oilers take the trophy.
Should be a doozy...the impartial fans of hockey who are watching this series are getting one helluva show.

Interesting point about Cole possibly being sore tomorrow. However, he's been working out for well over a month. He started skating nearly a month ago (IIRC), and within the last few weeks, he's been doing lots of suicide-type drills in practice.
Trainers have said, a couple of weeks ago (when we thought he might get in for Buffalo) that he was in such good shape that it's hard to believe he was in a neckbrace for a couple of months.
The man fully prepared himself to be ready if the Docs gave him a green light. Yesterday was for sure a warmup. And judging how he played, I'd be worried.
The only thing that's off for him is his timing, which should be a little better tomorrow.
As for the rest, all very good questions. It's definitely going to be a game to remember.

However, he's been working out for well over a month.
And by the sounds of things, he's been working out hard. The only thing I worried about was the reaction to physical play, since it was his first time with it, but no worries!
The only thing that's off for him is his timing, which should be a little better tomorrow.
True. He seemed hesistant to go to the net, played the point a lot, and didn't take some good shooting lanes, but I think he just wanted to get his bearings. He'll look stronger tomorrow.

-Can the Oilers keep focused and play well or will the first game at Lord Stanley's prize get them off their wheels?
I hear the 4th game is hardest to win ;) I hope the Canes have enough to muster one last solid performance, knowing they can/have to lay it all on the line. Starbucks for everyone on me!
-Cole looked great last night. Will this be a warmup game...or will it be kind of like when you work out for the first time in a while and everything gets sore the next day...I'm thinking he'll be good to go.
I had the same thought. I don't think the skating and pace of the game are much of a problem because he has been working hard and is very fit. I hope his neck feels OK, that one hit in particular (I think it was Moreau) keeps going through my head. Scary. I am more concerned about his health than anything else, but I hope he goes out tomorrow like the Cole we love. I expected him to be a lot more tentative. HG, Please let him have a pain free fantastic game.
-Spacek was called for diving last night...will they continue to look to make those calls?
nah, that would be too much consistency. It will be a crap shoot how the game is called one last time.
I'm envious of those who get to be at RBC tomorrow night...you get the watch the Stanley Cup being awarded regardless of who wins. You will obviously cheer on your Canes if they are victorious...and I know you'll be all class if the Oilers take the trophy.
My stomach is in knots already. It will be absolutely insane. I do hope that our fans have a lot of class should the awful happen, but hard to tell when emotions are high and your heart is on the floor.. enough of that though! I am afraid to hope. I may have a heart attack at puck drop. Hopefully there will be plenty of EMTs at the RBC! Ready for my cardiac canes to give me one last fantastic rush before calling it a season.
Let's Go Canes!!!!
I think the Canes need to forget Game 6 ever happened. Tomorrow night needs to be a fresh start. Nobody is guaranteed anything; we are all dead even. Those Oilers think its a done deal. Show em how hard it is to win the 4th game. Be warriors. Make history (being victorius). WHATEVER IT TAKES.

Game 7...this is gonna be insane. Not much more to say. The boys are long due for a return to their game and they know it. Time to show them what the 'Canes are all about.
My stomach is aching over here---after being a nervous wreck at game 5, I can't imagine what I'll be like come Monday. But as nervous as I am, I'm totally thrilled that I've got the chance to cheer on my team at game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Seeing the boys lay it all on the line---with #26 skating right by their side--is going to be absolutely amazing.
Time to start saving our voices, 'Canes fans. We can make the difference. We fought for home ice advantage all year long...now let's make it count. Time to go allll out, Caniacs.

Cole worked out in a special pool at the NCSU FB center. The pool is designed to allow injured athletes to stay in shape in spite of their injuries. The water supports some of your body weight to reduce stress but you still get a good aerobic workout for your heart and lungs.

Cole certainly look fit/quick/etc last night. I'm just wondering how long it will take to get his timing back...also...hockey games in Feb are played a lot different than hockey games in the SCF and I have no idea what kind of adjustment curve. He certainly looked great last night. Him, Jussi...Rem Murray returning from his neck injury. Good stories abound in these finals...

This is what it's all about. If anybody had told the Canes or the Oilers that at the end of Year One of the "new NHL" they would be playing in Game Seven of the Stanley Cup finals they would have probably called them crazy. No matter what happens Monday night it's been one heck of a year for both franchises. In my little world (which sometimes may have two sunsets instead of just one) the Canes will come out flying and end the year right. But you know, even if they lose, perish the thought, it's been a great year for the team and should only be better next year. I know I'll be at work tomorrow with my Canes jersey on, surrounded by the Oiler faithful, and I'll still be a supporter come Tuesday morning too, no matter what. Go Canes Go!!

Couldn't ask for a better setup for this ending. Cole's first home game in what seems like forever. All these veterans, so many still looking for hockey's ultimate prize. From inches away from the one goal it would have taken in game 5, to the precipice of either silver-inscribed glory or infamy, relegated as a footnote in the next chapter of the story of someone else's franchise.
No footnotes here. Get out there and put your names down, let the next generation of hockey fans to come see and hear the story of the 2006 Hurricanes, not the 2006 Oilers.
60 minutes to immortality.

AMEN!
Alright guys, this is it. We have waited our whole lives for this moment. Since our first Canes games, we have dreamt of the shiny silver trophy to be raised by our boys. I just watched Miracle, and lemme tell ya, im pumped. To Captain Brind'Amour, its time, be William Wallace and lead our team to victory. Staal, Cole, Stillman, be the first line and take it to them, your line is finally restored, now make the fans in edmonton fear it! Wardo, Edmonton just kept you from winning the cxp in your hometown. Get Vengeance! Wesley, this is your time, win, and you can exit into history as a champion. For all the Caniacs, the dedicated who have supported you through all the hard times, and the new who watch in anticipation that they could join the Caniac Nation. Its time for a new miracle on ice. I wanna see the team that everyone wrote off, told that there was no chance we could make the playoffs, told we had bad goaltending, a weak defense, and sloppy offense; its time to raise the cxp in the faces of all those people and say: This is my Stxnlxy Cxp!

This has been an awesome year, to say the least. And tomorrow's game is the Super Bowl of the NHL (so to speak). I'm sure none of us wanted it to come down to a Game 7, but I firmly believe that things happen for a reason. The reasons may not be clear right now, but my heart says one of them is that we were meant to see a certain person return to the game he loves and skate that certain shiny thing around in uniform and in front of 18,000 adoring fans. I might be wrong, but that's the ray of hope to which I cling.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm packing some tissues. Whichever way it ends, I'm gonna need 'em.

O.K... does this ever happen to anyone else?
I woke up just now really disoriented. Sometimes this happens to me. It's like I've had such a deep sleep, I'm having trouble shaking into consciousness, or something.
I was lying there thinking, "What day is it? Is it still the weekend?" So, I'm trying to shake out the cobwebs, and I finally realize, "No. Sunday was yesterday. Gotta go to work. It's Monday."
So then, I look at the clock and realize I've woken up about 1/2-an-hour before I really need to get up, so I roll over and try to go back to sleep. So, as I'm snuggling back in, I think my usual Monday morning thought, "Oh... Mondays.... I hate Mondays..... going to back to work...."
And then.... BAM!! FULLY AWAKE!!! because..... It's not just any Monday--- I come to the full realization that IT'S GAME #7 MONDAY!!!
INSTANT ANXIETY!! And now I'm back to my mind racing with thoughts, the way it's been doing since Saturday night. Just no peace. Trying to play out all the possible scenarios. Am I going to feel joy tonight? Or utter disappointment? Will it be euphoria? Or will I be trying to will myself to be a good sport and hold myself together?
My mind just keeps racing because if I let in a "bad" feeling for too long, I start thinking, "NO! Keep positive -- only positive thoughts." But then after a couple minutes, I start thinking, "No! Don't be so positive! That'd be cocky! Prepare for the worst! Visualize the wrong team skating IT around!" But then.... back to the GOOD day dreams!! But NO!!! Don't think like that!!!
I swear to God I'm not on cocaine! My mind is just racing! So.... anyway.... that's why I'm up so early. No way in hell to go back to sleep.
So....
IT'S GAME DAY!! Put on your dancin' shoes, my friends!!
C'mon team! You can do it!!! This is YOUR Stxnlxy Cxp!

I didn't know if anyone else was watching WRAL at 6 this morning but there was already a car at the RBC Center. The reporter said it was 4 people from the Bronx that drove all night long to attend the game. He said they weren't even sure if they could get tickets or not and also planned to drive back tonight. :eek2:
???? :eek2: Are they Oiler or Canes fans or just good hockey fans? That's amazing!
One day long ago, in a land far away....I had a dream. A dream we would play a game 7 for the Stanley Cup. So I said to myself, self...get yourself a license plate to celebrate that event.
It's time once again for the super duper, lucky license plate mojo.
CHL- I thought of your Lucky License plate- yesterday morning; and I just smiled- I told my husband about your plate a few weeks ago, and I brought it up again yesterday, & he says to me- "your friend from LGC is a soothsayer, and I know his license plate will come true" ;)
CL- I know what you're describing- I have had moments like you describe, most of that happened during the BUF series. So you're not going crazy. :D
I threw up 3 times before I left for work, why, I have no idea. My media ban is still in effect, I may lift the ban later today, but right now, I'm kind of in la-la land, channeling good thoughts.
Bring it all out there Caniacs. The guys need us!

Good morning Caniacs!!! I woke up this morning totally psyched!!! I can't describe the feeling. Everyone at work expected me to be moping, but instead I'm so excited and waiting for game time. Tonight I will see the Stanley Cup awarded for the first time in my life. Tonight I hope to scream until I have no voice left and no energy left in my body. C'mon guys, we can do this.

Like I said in the Game 6 thread, a sense of calm came over me immediately after that game. For some reason, I'm still feeling that way. I have my jersey on here at work today (for the first time all season) and am ready. I know once I walk through those metal detectors the switch is going to flip and I'm going to be at my loudest. All I want is our best effort (fans and players). One way or the other, we're all going to watch the Cup rolled out tonight, and here's to hoping ou guys are still on the ice when it is. If not, thanks SO much for a great season ... it's appreciated. If it does come out for us, party time.
For the last time this season ...
Go get 'em boys!
A co-worker of mine told me that every playoff game day PL goes to the same Bruegger's Bagel shop and got bagles for everyone. Jerry saw him this morning and said that he asked him why he was the "go-for" for the team and he laughed and said it was just the tradition.. then PL laughed and said he was glad his work was done after today. Everyone was yelling GO CANES as he left..

Darn...I wrote up what I thought was a wonderful little piece (cough, cough) and then the server failed when I submitted. Oh well! Here's the quick jist:
-I hope for only heros tonight...no goats (i.e. how would Ward or Jussi feel for the rest of their lives if they have a Conklin like giveaway tonight)
-I hope the refs are CONSISTENT. If they are going to call little hooks...fine...but do it both ways. It drives us fans CrAzY if they don't! No McGoo certainly helps the situation.
-I hope the fans/players of the losing team can remember this year for the great ride that it is and that ANYTHING can happen in a game 7. With that said...it will hurt for a while...coming this close to the prize and walking away empty handed will not be easy to take.
For fans of hockey, it will be better if tonight is a one goal game. For fans of the losing team, it will probably be easier to take if it's at least a 2 or 3 goal margin. If it's decided by one or maybe two goals, the summer will be filled with 'what if that bounce didn't happen' or 'what if that call wasn't made' or 'what if he shot instead of passed that time', etc...etc...etc...

I think Joe is still a big question mark. He has no consistency. You don't know what you're going to get. His upside is a good one... but we so rarely see it.
I think Ladd being in is pretty much a must. (at least imho).
I'd actually argue that a fresh LaRose being in might be better than a crapshoot-Joe.

Guy, I totally agree. No question.
The question of Ladd vs Joe isn't even a consideration for me- It's LADD. Joe shows me a big ol' donut. Sergei Samsonov knocked Joe down in game six in a little scrum for the puck- People, Sergei, is 5 foot 8, maybe 175? Joe is 6'5, 230? WTF???? just my two cents on who sits and plays......seems like edmonton power play has found something. maybe larose sitting had something to do with that.
if weight sits, then i go with larose over joe. may sound crazy, but team was playing well with him. that leaves staal, brindy, cullen and kadams centering respective lines. of course larose and cadams with the energy line. whitney, ladd, and cullen. williams, brindy, and recchi. staal, stiller, and colesy......or something similar. i respect the hell out if big joe, but until that knee is 100%, he is a liability. larose PK and energy is awesome. he gets under edmonton's skin more than big joe.
oh and hedican, williams, commodore have to stay out of the sin bin!!

Lyrics from that new video they've been playing lately. It was first created after the come back against Buffalo and since has been on the Jumbo Tron for pre-game.
"Look Where We Are"
I still remember the time,
When this all felt like a dream.
So completely out of reach,
Frustrating.
We kept our nose to the grind,
Make the days turn into weeks.
Hoping time will heal the pain,
Of waiting.
Now it seems so long ago.
Just look back on,
How far we've come.
We've made it somehow,
Look where we are now.
All we've done,
Our battles won.
We've made it somehow,
Look where we are now.
I used to wonder if I,
Would ever have the chance to be,
Something more than what you see.
I doubt it.
We learned to open our eyes,
Now I both think we'd agree, ?
That we're better off than when we started.
There's still so much left to go ?
Just look back on,
How far we've come.
We've made it somehow,
Look where we are now.
All we've done,
Our battles won.
We've made it somehow,
Look where we are now.
And the best is yet to come.
'cause our story isn't done.
No! No! No! No! No!
Just look back on,
How far we've come.
We've made it somehow,
Look where we are now.
All we've done,
Our battles won.
We've made it somehow,
Look where we are now.
Look where we are now.
No! No! No! No! No!
Look where we are now.
Look where we are now.
No! No! No! No! No!

What I want to see tonight:
Brind'Amour scoring (want to see the Captain take the reigns again)
Stillman scoring (for redemption on lazy pass that lead to OT goal)
Staal scoring ('cause his reaction to scoring lights the building up)
4th line scoring (those guys deserve it, they work so hard)
Cullen scoring (I like his skill and style of play, he's due)
Cole scoring (needs no explanation)
I'd like to see LaRose back in. He brings more tenacity and speed to getting to the loose pucks than Vasicek. I want to see Ward play "lights-out" again! I want a shut out! I want the fans to be loud, the entire time. EVERYONE!! Lots of good hits, puck control, discipline. I want to see that extra gear that they can seemingly shift into when they want or need it bad enough. I want to see a certain silver shiny tropy being lifted by certain "good guys" and (previously) cupless veterans in front of a joyful home crowd. That's the way it should be... that's the way it WILL be!

Here we are...somewhere last week we never thought we would be. Game 7. This is it. Someones hopes are going to be realized tonight, and someone elses will be ended. Honestly, I am not watching the game tonight. The past two games I've watched, we didn't look so hot. When I don't watch...you know the rest.
The most depressing thing about all of this. Hockey ends tonight.
And still 1 1/2 months till preseason football.
Thoughts on the game.
1) No stupid penalties.
2) Capitalize on the PP
3) Goaltending must be superb.
4) If you get go though the Oil D, go around them
5) Block shots.

I couldn't even sleep last night. I just sat up re-reading my latest Hockey News until 5:20 AM. (Granted I didn't start trying to go to sleep until 4:30).
Regardless, it has all come down to this. You don't want to be caught asking yourself "Could today have gone differently if I had given it just a little bit more?" This is the day that dreams will be come reality for one team, and do you want to be on the down end of this?
We can use all the rousing speaches we want, but the Oilers are getting those same words of encouragement. They are claiming that today is THEIR day. I say that we take it from them! I say that this is OUR time. This is OUR day. This is OUR Stxnlxy Cxp.
Keep your tails out of the Penalty Box and skate as you've skated all the regular season. This is the moment that we have been playing for all of our professional lives. Savor every moment of this...
And keep Lord Stanley at home!

Finally back in Raleigh---and so glad. 11 family members constantly reminding you that this is the last chance...it wears on you. And with that being said, I'm sooo nervous--but extremely excited at the same time. Too many emotions for me...
Displaying the "don't-tread-on-me" attitude that makes him so popular with his teammates and fans, Cole said if Edmonton wants to be physical, even borderline dirty, than he's ready, even after sitting out 46 games since March 4 with a broken vertebra.
"Honestly, I think I might skate around the ice and jump into guys and see if I can catch anybody in the head," Cole said. "It seems to be their M.O. so we might as well play that way too."

The Canes will do fine as long as they play their game. I just want a clean game... I'm very OK with good solid hits and I want them, but the refs need to call that garbage Edm was calling hits (almost every hit they had in the 1st was high and their feet clearly left the ice). I just don't want this game decided by the officiating.
Go Canes kick some Oiler ASS!!!! Wish I could be there... damn job.

Chad brings energy. Joe brings... give me a minute... can't think of anything right now, but give me some more time.
As for Weight. We won all season when he wasn't on the team. I'd take Erik anyday and I thought he looked good Sat. He and Cam loked like the only two on the ice that wanted to win Saturday.
As for Joe, ... got nothing. What happened to the Joe from the preseason? He's not a loss tonight... sorry Joe.

That's what it sounded like. They clearly didn't have possession of the puck. EDM just got a gift. They get atleast one per game.
ontheglass
06-19-2006, 09:20 PM
Sounds lilke a BS explanation to me. Sounds like he was trying to convince himself. How can he say that he never closed a hand on the puck? How can he say that the EDM knew what he was doing? Didn't Wallin do the same thing (and it wasn;t near the goal line) that he said didn't happen there?
I guess we know where the sh*tty NHL officiating comes from.
caneshockeychick
06-19-2006, 09:21 PM
I guess from what I'm hearing and reading, while what Staios did was illegal, there was a delayed penalty so as soon as the puck was "touched" whistled down.
Let's hope this makes the Canes come out that much hungrier.
KTinaY
06-19-2006, 09:22 PM
I have a question about a call and a non-call.
Earlier in the period Staal was called for goalie interference. I thought the trapazoid was not considered the "crease." Jussi was behind the net in the trapazoid. Staal hit him and they called it. Fast forward, just a few minutes later an Oiler player interfered with Cam...(who looked very close to his crease in the front of the net.) Carolina wanted a call but the refs told them that Cam was out of the crease and because of that it didn't deserve a penalty.
I am not saying that either were bad calls. I am just a little confused I guess.
Thanks,
Tina

to get a haircut, no shampoo, no style (its cheaper that way too!)
for me to get up in the morning (I hit the snooze twice and set my 3rd alarm, yes it takes 3, at least 20 minutes ahead of the 1st)
to walk the dogs
to get thru the drive thru at taco bell at 12:15 on a weekday
