Yeah.

It's a minor annoyance before a major switch that's coming down the pipe. Just hold on. :)

Caniac

Yes, yes it does.

The new hosting solution is screwed up and I will be moving the site yet again in the coming days. We will also be upgrading to a better messageboard solution...

OK, so I am having a strange problem too. I get the topic reply notifications, check them while logged in, then I go to use the "View posts since last visit", and it asks me to log in, which then makes my "last visit" only a few minutes ago, therefore there are no posts since my last visit. What gives?

It's the hosting. I have next week off from work and hope to accomplish both a move AND a switch to vBulletin with a minimum of downtime.

Umm, Caniac...For whatever reason it's still happening to me. When I'm on the main page forums still appear in the orange, unread color, even though I've read them. However, when I go to a specific forum then it appears as though I've read them.

I don't even know if that makes sense! Anyway, not a big deal since I just hit the "Mark all threads read" button at the bottom of the main page. I wasn't sure if it's just me or if others were having the same issue.

SouthernHockeyChick
07-09-2006, 10:51 PM
I'm having the issue as well. And I wasn't even having it before. Weird.

Caniac
07-09-2006, 10:52 PM
Yeah there's a setting somewhere about how long it waits before forums are marked as read. I'll have to find that.

Eventually. ;)

SouthernHockeyChick
07-09-2006, 11:18 PM
Well, I don't think that setting is my problem. I had the entire board marked as read, closed the window, came back 10 minutes later....and now all the threads with posts from July 4th on are showing as unread!

But, I'm seriously not complaining. I can just look at the date. It's just strange!

Caniac
07-09-2006, 11:19 PM
Well I just changed a setting that did that. :)

It will now mark threads read as you read them and the forums immediately as well.

SouthernHockeyChick
07-09-2006, 11:23 PM

Mine aren't changing to unread, either. And if I click on "New Posts" (which is my custom), that list is FIVE PAGES long! :eek2:

And while I'm at it..... What does the colored dot next to my name up there ^ mean?

vB's good with little things like that, in that if you hover your mouse over something, it'll usually give you a hint.

that dot is for online/offline mostly.

They're not changing to unread for me, either. Every time I log on I think tommy has posted again in the World Cup thread and every time--he hasn't.

Probly (hard for me to say definitively what members see. I guess we should have a test_member account so I could check. hmm.)...

but, while in a forum, you should see a "Forum Tools" link on the right side of where the forum title is. Click it. In the dropdown you'll see a Mark Forum as Read option. :)

Thanks, Guy, I found it. I swear I looked for a good while and couldn't find it! Today when I first logged in I saw posts that weren't there yesterday, but now I left the site for a while and came back and it seems to be marking the posts read just fine. Yeay!!!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's two weeks after Vandy's post and I'm still seeing this problem. At home and at work, both on Firefox 1.5.0.4, Mac OS X and Win XP respectively.

Caniac
07-24-2006, 03:32 PM
Hmmm... Are there posts down the list that you haven't looked at? Because that causes the forum to show as if there's new.

I click the link that says "Mark All Forums Read" after I'm done usually to make sure it doesn't show new posts in the forum view the next time I come back.

That's the only thing phpBB seemed to do better. It knew that if you look at a thread/post that's newer than the ones you didn't look at, that you obviously didn't care and updated the forum info...

VandyCane
07-24-2006, 04:59 PM
Hmm, I actually haven't had that problem anymore since about a day after I posted that.

Usually. Problem is, there's another board I go to (rangefinderforum.com) that uses vbulletin that don't have this problem at if I don't read entire thread. There, they also have the "mark all threads read" option (I think), but I don't have to use it for all the posts to be marked "read" after I've perused the forum.

Caniac

Maybe there's some setting in the admin panel for it...

I'll do some searching.

Shell

I'm on IE 6 and Win XP and mine works perfectly. I love how it retains the unread posts that I don't get to before I time out for a session.

One thing I have noticed, is that LGC automatically marked a thread as read if you were on any page in that thread. VB only marks it as read if you view every new post within the thread. sometimes I click on New Posts without realizing I missed the next page, or started at the top of the current page and missed the last comment on the page before.

Do you use the http://www.letsgocanes.com/forum/images/buttons/firstnew.gif button to the left of the thread title to go to the first new post? Since I found that bad boy, my posts have been marked properly. Hope that helps somehow. :)

SouthernHockeyChick

Using Win XP and Mozilla Firefox whatever number they're on now, and I agree completely with Shell. I used to hate that I felt I couldn't check in just when I had a second at LGC because just being there would then mark all the threads read so I couldn't come back later and read whatever else was new. Or at least I never figured out how. Now, they're unread until I read them or mark them. Works for me.

Canesluver
07-25-2006, 06:35 AM
See, what I liked about the old system was that after a couple days, unread thread would just change to read on their own.

Right now, there's at least 30 or more threads that I have no intention of reading (topic just doesn't interest me), but the only way to get them to drop off is every day I have to get into the forum and mark them as read. I never had to do that before.

So, I feel like I have to spend 10 minutes every day, housekeeping, marking threads as read-- when I never I had to do that before.

I find that irritating.

VandyCane
07-25-2006, 10:07 AM
Actually Canesluver, the main page has a "Mark forums read" at the bottom of the page that will mark all the topics in all the forums as read. When things were messed up for me I used to read the stuff I wanted to then I would go to the main page and click on that--it only took one second.

Guyute
07-25-2006, 10:51 AM
Also, hit the Quick Links line at the top title menu, like under your name. Mark Forums Read is under there. You can do that from any page. :)

Canesluver
07-25-2006, 01:09 PM
Thanks for that-- that will help.

I guess my point is... I wish there were some kind of system, where ... let's say if you haven't read it after 72 hours, it'll automatically change to being "read." Or it could be set with your personal preferences, or something.

Because if I haven't read it after 3 days, I probably never will.

I guess I just don't find the "New Posts" tab to be as helpful, as the old system's, the way it currently works.

Guyute
07-25-2006, 09:58 PM
But then if you went away for more than 3 days (like those rare vacations we get, if we're lucky, from time to time)... you'd have to go through every forum looking at dates.
As someone who tries to keep an eye on as many threads as humanly possible.... I'd simply not bother if I didn't have the new posts function.
I like that things hang around until I "Mark Forums Read"... if I forget to do that and I come back a few hours later, I get that nice break in the New Posts results that tells me that posts below this line were unread, but there hasn't been anything new since last visit. Good to know. If I knew they were new last time, but chose not to read something, then I still know nothing new has happened there... and move on to the things that actually are new.
/shrug. that's just me. I realize that as a mod-type I need to track new posts/threads a little more than most regular readers would... so my needs differ a bit. persaonlly I like this "never mark as read automatically" kind of format. :)

SouthernHockeyChick
07-25-2006, 10:42 PM
^ Agree completely.

I actually don't read a lot of stuff in OT, flea market, other sports, the lounges, etc, etc but I know I don't read that so, not having them marked as read doesn't bother me. If the glowing envelopes are bugging me, I mark the things read. If it's something I haven't read for 3 days, I am obviously not interested so why do I care if it's marked unread? I was never going to read it to begin with. Having the stuff I do want to read still marked as un-read when I have to leave and come back in later really helps me out a lot. It was a pet peeve at LGC.

And as someone who groaned when I heard we were switching to vBulletin and hasn't been a fan in the past, I've got to say I really like it now. Just takes some getting used to.

Canesluver
07-26-2006, 12:31 AM
I disagree completely. I hate taking the time to mark things as unread. It's annoying. Like dusting... or taking out the trash...
