I realiaze the Hawks are NBA, but the Thrashers are equally involved with whatever is going on in this article:

How bad would it have been for either team to only be able to sign one year deals? So what exactly is going on? Some type of ownership coup or somthing?

The way I read it, Belkin is gaining ownership from a broken contract. But to protect him from the current ownership group from spending too much money before he takes over it looks like the judge put the one year limit on player contracts. Ew. What a mess. Too bad he rescinded it. Ilya can still be here a long time.
