I saw this last night on fanhome and now this morning on ch.com, but the poster on ch.com (from Quebec) is saying that this will cause problems for Jose. I think that's ridiculous, but then again, I don't live in Montreal.

I imagine that Jose and his 5.5 mil salary might be tough to move anyway.

Theodore family members arrested for loan sharking: reports
WebPosted Thu Jun 19 02:38:16 2003
CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Five members of Jose Theodore's family reportedly were arrested Wednesday for alleged loan sharking.

According to three Montreal-based television stations, Ted Theodore, the father of the Montreal Canadiens' superstar, was among 16 people arrested in connection with a well-organized loan sharking ring targeting Montreal Casino clientele.

Reports claimed Theodore's four half-brothers were also arrested and scheduled to appear in court on September 20.

Authorities allegedly conducted 30 raids following a year-long probe dubbed 'Operation Referee.'

Theodore, 26, posted a 20-31-6 record with a 2.90 goals-against average and two shutouts in 57 games for the Canadiens this past season, one in which he was paid $5 million US.

The Laval, Que., native is 91-115-25 with a 2.59 GAA and 17 shutouts in 248 NHL games since being drafted in the second round -- 44th overall -- by Montreal in 1994.

Two summers ago, Theodore signed the richest contract in Canadiens history (three-years, $16.5 million US) after winning the Hart Trophy and Vezina Trophy as the league's most valuable player and top goaltender, respectively.

I think the folks in Montreal are already looking for any reason to run him out of town on a rail. They'll probably use this if they can...fair or not.

Police not investigating Theodore
Canadian Press
6/19/2003

MONTREAL (CP) - Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jose Theodore is not under investigation for any involvement in an alleged loansharking ring, Montreal police said Thursday.

Police officers have spoken to the Canadiens to assure them that Theodore is not part of the criminal investigation, said Jean-Guy Gagnon, assistant director of investigations with the Montreal police.

``We do not intend to meet with him in this matter,'' Gagnon told a news conference.

``Jose Theodore is currently not part of a criminal investigation.''

Media reports on Wednesday said Theodore's father and four half-brothers were among 16 people arrested in connection with alleged loansharking.

Police wouldn't release the names of those arrested.

``I can't confirm the Theodore family is behind this,'' Gagnon said.

Gagnon also said police did not alert the media about the arrests and didn't release any of the names of those arrested.

Local photographers and television camera operators captured the images of some of those arrested in the back of a police cruiser.

Organized-crime investigators executed nearly 40 search warrants in and around Montreal as part of the crackdown. The suspects are scheduled to appear in court in September.

Police said officers had been investigating the ring for the last nine months under a probe called Operation Referee.

Theodore, of Ste-Julie, Que., won the National Hockey League's Vezina and Hart trophies in 2002.

He's the Canadiens' highest-paid player and will earn $5.5 million in 2003-2004.

in yet another Theodore's family article, I thought this interesting:Le Journal de Montreal reported Friday that Theodore has been photographed twice with members of the Hells Angels biker gang and that police had alerted NHL security agents.

It said NHL security had warned Theodore about associating with the bikers through his agent, Don Meehan, but that the second photograph had been taken after the warning. The NHL mandates who you can hang out with? I know bikers have an unsavory reputation, but I am sure there are some hells angels out there who do good for their community. Regardless, who is the NHL to say you can't hang out with this huge group of people?

If I remember correctly, a few years ago I captained a team in the Relay for Life in the town where I was living and in some of the literature we got there was a write up about one of the teams that had raised the most money in the country doing relays the year before....it was the Hells Angels. What is up with the stereotyping, huh?

A lot of motorcycle groups do excellent work....lots of charity rides to help those in need....that is ridiculous if the NHL has the authority to tell them who they can be friends with or be seen with!! If it is drug dealers, I can understand..but if it is just based on Harley's and leather jackets, that really sucks!!

With his fat contract, I would think Jose would have 85k in his wallet. ;)

Just kidding - this doesn't really implicate him, but he can't be happy.

Report: Cash seized in Theodore case
Canadian Press
7/9/2003

MONTREAL (CP) - A Montreal report says investigators probing an alleged loansharking ring seized $85,000 from a safety-deposit box co-owned by Canadiens goalie Jose Theodore and his father.

Le Journal de Montreal quotes police sources as saying organized-crime investigators seized the cash recently after obtaining a warrant from a Quebec court judge.

The reported seizure of Theodore's safe-deposit box was the second such warrant issued against his assets in recent weeks, said Le Journal.

Police have also executed a warrant on a bank account belonging to the Theodore, according to the newspaper.

Theodore shared the safety-deposit box with his father Ted, who media reports say was one of 16 people arrested last month in connection with the alleged ring. Theodore's four half-brothers were also reported to have been picked up in the sweep. Police refuse to confirm or deny the reports, but have said Theodore is not a suspect.

Theodore has denied any involvement in the alleged ring. In a June 20th statement he also said he was deeply distressed at what has happened to his father and brothers.

I was thinking the same thing, as much as he makes, how does this tie him to anything!?

What is a measly 85,000 mean to him?

Unfortunately the legal system won't move fast enough to clear him (presuming he's not involved) before the season training begins.

The question I'm sure that's on the minds of the police, fans, Habs, etc., is whether or not Jose's money was used to fund this loan shark business his brothers/father were (allegedly) involved in.

Even if it were, Jose's only crime might be trusting the wrong people to look out for his best interests. Unfortunately, it may be a long road to the eventual outcome, whatever that is.

Theodores plead guilty to loansharking

Canadian Press

MONTREAL (CP) - The father of Montreal Canadiens goalie Jose Theodore and the player's half-brother pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of loansharking and possessing a restricted weapon.

Ted Nicholas Theodore, 71, and his son Nicky, 45, reached their deals amid negotiations between the Crown and the defence, exempting the accused from a number of other charges including gangsterism.

Nicky Theodore was ordered to pay a $21,000 fine and his father Ted will be sentenced Jan. 31.

Two associates, Pierre Hamel, 50, and Jean-Guy Bisson, 69, also pleaded guilty Wednesday to loansharking and marijuana possession and were fined $15,000 each.

They're among 14 people who were charged in June 2003.

Ted Nicholas Theodore faced 58 counts among the 124 charges laid for criminal acts committed as far back as 1985.

The charges against the 14 also included extortion, gangsterism and uttering threats. Their preliminary hearing was scheduled for January.

Jose Theodore, who was not charged, has said he supports his family but he has refused to discuss details of the case.

The ring allegedly operated at the Montreal Casino and several other establishments in the metropolitan area.

Gamblers, some of whom were in financial trouble, were charged illegal interest rates of up to 600 per cent on loans, said police. Victims borrowed amounts ranging from $1,000 to tens of thousands of dollars.

Those who didn't pay back the money were threatened with violence, but police said the threats were not carried out.

Theodore, a former National Hockey League Most Valuable Player, is one of the team's top stars and one of the few Canadiens who does television commercials.

Despite police assurances the award-winning goalie wasn't part of the criminal investigation into loansharking, he suffered immediate consequences following reports his family members had been charged.

Mikes Restaurants Inc., a Montreal-based submarine-sandwich chain, pulled a television commercial last year that featured the boyish-looking goaltender.
