TAMPA BAY (CP) - Tampa Bay Lightning star forward Martin St. Louis may be reunited with his college scoring partner as the Lightning have signed free agent centre Eric Perrin.
Perrin and St. Louis, who grew up together in Laval, Que., were a prolific scoring duo for the University of Vermont and are the top two scorers in the school's history. Both were Hobey Baker Award finalists and NCAA all-stars in 1996.
"It's taken six years to do it, but we have reunited one of the most dynamic duos ever to play the game, not merely at Vermont but in the NCAA," Lightning general manager Jay Feaster said in a statement.
While St. Louis had a breakout year with the Lightning this past season as one of the NHL's top scorers, Perrin, 27, has spent the last three playing in the Finnish Elite League.
The five-foot-nine, 176-pound forward had 18 goals and 28 assists in 56 games for JYP in 2002-03.
Feaster said St. Louis told him about Perrin at the conclusion of this season.
"Marty told me that while he was the one who had been given the opportunity to play in the NHL, Eric was every bit as good a player, if not better, but had never been given the chance," he said.
Added St. Louis: "We grew up together and played together until our first year as professionals, and we never imagined we could be on the same team in the NHL. I'm really looking forward to the possibility of that happening."
