Several weeks ago I sent an e-mail to our 2 senators and the White House suggesting that the President honor the Stanley Cup Champions at the White House. I figured if the President can honor the top 10 finalist in American Idol, that he should honor our Canes.
Today I received a letter from Senator Burr regarding my recommendation that the Hurricanes be invited to the White House since they are the Stanley Cup Champions. The following is from Senator Burr " Traditionally, the champions in the various professional sports are invited to the White House at a time that meets with the schedule of the team and the President. I too hope that this visit will take place soon and will do anything that I can to facilitate this".
Time will tell. Opening season is around the corner.
They could do this on a road trip to the Caps.

Every championship team goes to the WH. It almost certainly will be when they play the Caps unless Bush is out of town then - but with 4 trips to DC they should be able to work it out for 1 of those dates.

I recall the Devils going to the White House back in 2003- that clip of Bush mugging with the hulking toothless Colin White, and Bush commenting on his teeth made it all over the news for days......
You would think we'd see our guys go to the White House, but I'll take the wait and see attitude.....

They even have obscure college championship teams go to the WH now. About a year ago there was a story because a women's college team (I think it was field hockey champs) showed up and they all wore flip-flops and some people thought that was not dressed up enough for the WH.
Sometimes they will have multiple teams show up on the same day so the Canes could be there the same day as the NBA champs.

wasn't it like the Duke's women lacross team that wore like that? I definatley remember reading that in the N&O.

There have been some players who didn't go to the WH because they didn't agree with the policies of the president.
The WH trips replaced what used to be a dumb tradition - after winning the Super Bowl, World Series, etc. the president used to call the winning team in the locker room right after the game. But since that phone call was normally in the middle of a wild party they decided to cut it out. Anyone remember Nixon giving the Redskins a play for a Super Bowl? They actually used the play and lost 12 yards! :)

It's been over 2 months since the Cup win. IMO it's too little, too late. We don't need our guys to be sloppy seconds-- it's like the B-list of invitees to a wedding, who only getting invited because somebody from the A-list doesn't want to go.

I think most pro teams go at some later date these days. There's no way to gather them all together until the next season anyway. I think it's logistics, not an afterthought.
I would expect them to go while in DC to play the Caps at some point (as someone mentioned).

Believe it or not, one championship team was NOT invited to the White House:
UND's 1987 NCAA title team (for hockey, of course) never got an invite to visit with Ronald Reagan.
They did, however, get to trek to Ottawa to visit with Brian Mulroney (who was the PM of Canada at the time).

NCAA rules might have kept that team from the White House. Were they in Ottawa for some other reason than just to visit the PM?
In 1983 the NCSU BB team was not allowed to go to the WH because at that time the NCAA did not allow any team trips more than 100 miles from campus except to play a game. They later changed that rule to specially allow a WH trip for championship teams but other trips are still not allowed. I'm not sure if the rule was changed by 1987. Also I'm not sure if the WH trips were widespread in 1987 . I know that the UNC BB title team went in 1993 but I can't recall if Duke went in 91 or 92.
