I just heard this! How crazy and sad.

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.

Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin's death and said his family had been notified. Irwin, 44, was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.

He is survived by his American-born wife Terri and their two children, Bindi Sue, born 1998, and Robert (Bob), born December 2003.

Irwin became a popular figure on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture and relocation of crocodiles.

Irwin's enthusiastic approach to nature conservation and the environment won him a global following. He was known for his exuberance and use of the catchphrase "Crikey!"

But his image suffered a setback in January 2004 when he held his then one-month-old baby Bob while feeding a crocodile at his Australian zoo.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer expressed his sorry Monday and said that he was fond of Irwin and was very appreciative of all the work he had done in promoting Australia overseas.

In 2003, Irwin spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.'s Australian Story television program about how he was perceived in his home country.

"When I see what's happened all over the world, they're looking at me as this very popular, wildlife warrior Australian bloke," he said, the ABC reported.

"And yet back here in my own country, some people find me a little bit embarrassing. "You know, there's this... they kind of cringe, you know, 'cause I'm coming out with 'Crikey' and 'Look at this beauty'."

At least he went out doing something he loved.

Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous bard on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.

That is pretty ironic and sad. Prayers go out to his family.

Much as we all figured this would happen eventually, it's still sad. Irwin may have been crazy, but he did a lot to raise awareness of environmental issues. Going to be hard for someone to take his place.

RIP. :(

Poor guy. :( As crazy and funny as he was - he really did a lot for animals and getting people - especially kids - involved. If it weren't for him, my little cousin would be no where near as insanely knowlegdable about animals as he is...and he certainly wouldn't aspire to be the next "Crocodile Hunter." The guy truly was great at his job.

Ironic that I heard about this from a friend while we were at the NC zoo today. :( I feel for his wife and kids as well. Hopefully, it cushions the blow to know he died doing what made him happy.

And what a freak way to go! All the extremely deadly stuff he has handled and a stingray gets him. Stingrays aren't usually considered very dangerous at all.

This is a tragic loss. He was one of the few celeb types I respect. Croc Hunter was always one of my favorite shows. Even when I felt competely blah, the show always put a smile on my face. I'll definatly miss seeing him dive off of moving trucks to capture 'the most venomus snake in the whole world.' Or seeing him actually go into a swamp to capture an escaping croc.

Sad day indeed.

:( :( This is SO sad! I've loved his shows since I was younger. His passion for animals and how much he did for environmental awareness was truly admirable, and he can't be replaced. RIP Steve...my thoughts to his wife and kids, poor them..

Completely freaky. Stingray's are usually not prone to go after people. And even if you do get stung, it's usually because you stepped on them. But to get stung in the chest... just... odd.

For that to get him instead of something like a Black Mamba... /shaking head.

RIP

The crazy thing about this too, I was reading on some Aussie news sites, is that he was taking a break from filming the main documentary, but he still had someone filming him swimming with the rays...so his whole death was caught on camera. :( The project was supposed to be for his daughter, Bindi. :( They say he pulled out the barb before he died, which is supposed to be hard to do, because those things are serrated. You guys are right, totally freaky and unfortunate way to go, I feel so sad for his family, he truly seemed like a great guy.

He died doing what he loved though, that much is true...RIP.

It's a day later and it still hasn't set in yet. I guess the Aussie mother got it right when she said it's the Princess Di or JFK for kids. It's just amazing how much press coverage this is getting. And how many people are talking about it.

 It's cute but so sad at the same time...He was the type of guy, it seemed that if he had lived, he would never have been angry about the stingray attack...the world lost a great guy and animal activist. Me and my family/friends will miss his show...:(

LOL...don't mind that Bush cartoon up there....It wasn't the one that was originally posted..it used to be one with a stingray...like a little cartoony one, and it was crying. It was saying: "I'm sorry Steve, I didn't know it was you"...:(

Aww...cmw, I hope they never do. That would be too sad to see, and I don't think anyone should ever want to see that. I doubt even his famiyl would want to...
