102 AARON DAWSON 6' 4.5" 220 PETERBOROUGH D L
176 KEVIN NASTIUK 6' 1.5" 176 MEDICINE HAT G L
220 MATEJ TROJOVSKY 6' 4.5" 220 REGINA D L

Two huge defensemen (not Chara huge, perhaps, but large nonetheless) and a goalie with the immediate nickname of Nasty.

Dawson will probably lag behind Staal in progression, but it's always nice to see teammates get to remain in the same organization. He was -14 this season with Peterborough, and doesn't seem to be either the enforcer or scoring type. Mid-to-long range developmental player.

Nastiuk is the eighth rated NA goalie, but his stats look bad compared to others around him.. (4.40 GAA, .870 pct). Did play better in the playoffs (2.86 GAA, .920 pct), and shut out the opposition when he replaced Marc Andre Fleury halfway through the CHL Top Prospects game. Fleury had given up three goals in a period and a half.

Trojovsky.. yet another Czech in the Canes system, but this time one with an attitude. Big, durable, and mean, his nickname is Pig. Had 229 penalty minutes in 70 games for Regina.

Carolina traded the 138th and 168th picks to Columbus for their 4th round pick in 2004.

I thought this was supposed to be an incredibly deep draft from top to bottom.. but I guess the talent stopped at 136.

We drafted C Ryan Rorabeck with the first pick in the 9th round. He's from Toronto of the OHL.

Any word on what we got from Columbus?

CaniacPanther edit--I see. Thanks, Stewart. :spin:

So, here's what we picked up in the last two days (including trades): 4 centers, 5 defensemen, 1 left wing, and 1 goalie. Awful lot of centers isn't it? I thought we were shortest at LW....I guess some folks will be traded or switching positions.

I'm thinking some of these guys have several years still in college or the minors. Hopefully, we are looking at longterm player development that will help us for a lot of years.

I'm just hoping some of the big boy defensemen can skate a little! If they work out, our D corps won't have any problems with being too small

Yes. The Canes are not your standard 'worst team in the NHL'.. they can seriously consider themselves only a few changes away from being Cup contenders. A veteran winger should be easier to come by than either a centerman or a defenseman, so it makes sense to draft talent there, and trade for the rest.

I wonder how many of these moves and selections were influenced by our lack of development space in the minors. We're probably better off with players who can contribute immediately, or players who have some place to be for a couple years.
