This came out of the blue...do we really need another 3rd line center? Methinks this move is the beginning of the end of Vasicek's tenure as our 3rd line center...will he be in Lowell? Will he be a wing? Will he be a 'Cane? Who knows...

I hope this just means the Big Joe is a definite for switching to wing and doesn't mean that he's not third line center anymore. I know camp will reveal all, but I'll be disappointed if Joe's not in the lineup; I think he's worth keeping.

The AP Article:
Carolina picks up center for draft pick
By DAVID DROSCHAK, AP Sports Writer
June 22, 2003
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes added depth at center Sunday by acquiring Marty Murray from the Philadelphia Flyers for a sixth-round draft pick in 2004.
Murray had 11 goals and 15 assists in 76 regular-season games for the Flyers this past season.
``You are always going to be surprised when you're traded, but I'm excited about this,'' Murray said.
The six-year NHL veteran will make $700,000 next season.
``I view him as a utility guy in a sense that any given time he can jump in to any line and play any one of the three forward positions,'' Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said. ``He can really skate and he's a very smart player.''
Carolina is also expected to use Murray as one of its top penalty killers. The trade deepens the logjam at forward for Carolina. As many as 19 players will be competing for 13 spots in training camp.
``It depends on how you look at it,'' Rutherford said. ``You don't have that big of a logjam when you finished 30th in the league. We have to sort out what guys fit the best roles for us.''
The trade was the second in two days for the Hurricanes. Carolina sent former first-round draft picks David Tanabe and Igor Knyazev to Phoenix on Saturday for defenseman Danny Markov and a draft pick.
For Carolina, the center position is especially crowded with Ron Francis, Rod Brind'Amour, Josef Vasicek, Kevyn Adams and 2003 draft pick Eric Staal in the mix with Murray.
``I had an opportunity to play a little bit in the top nine in Philadelphia, but not consistently, and it was a lot of fun,'' Murray said.
Murray was a fourth-round draft pick of Calgary in 1993 and signed as a free agent with Philadelphia in 2001. He had 12 goals and 15 assists in 74 games for the Flyers in 2001-02.
Murray was in California at an NHL Players' Association meeting Sunday and met Carolina players Kevin Weekes and Erik Cole.
``This team on paper has a lot of very good players and I'm sure they want to come back with a lot to prove,'' Murray said.

Marty is the player of the day on NHLPA.com
They've got to get him in a Canes' jersey for a new picture. The black and orange won't do now ;)

Marty is goinbg to be a great player for the canes! I'd say he's capabel of atleast the 2nd line with Brind'Amour and Cole! He can play any forward postion not just center. So for the 3rd line it would probaly just come down to who they thought was the better center! If carolina gives him more ice time I think we will be truly suprised by him!
He is also supposed to be an awesome Penallty Killer! Not to mention I've haven't read one bad thing about him on or off the ice.
So if he can stay healthy I think Marty will be an awesome hurricane!
