So.... we'll be facing an un-beaten team.
Big deal. We did that in Round 2, when Jersey roared-in on a 15-game winning streak. Hopefully the boys have banked enough confidence in the last few wins to remember they're a very good team.
Guys just need to remember that they can beat the http://www.letsgocanes.com/chat/themes/default/smileys/gnu.gifhttp://www.letsgocanes.com/chat/themes/default/smileys/msn_snail.gif

Canes need to do it for themselves first, then us fans second. Because I would love nothing else than to have this win to listen to buffalo fans ignore the loss, come up with an excuse about injuries or someone's broken shoelace, the snow etc, and to see a youtube video of them beating us when the scoreboard says different. If we lose, at least play an honest hurricanes game

The Canes just need to bring it big into Buffalo. They've been good for these last 3 games and need to continue that play.
BTW, did anyone notice the booing in the TB game? I was wondering who they were booing.

I've heard booing in Tampa at their FIRST home game. They boo'd an unsuccessful power play. I'm sure they did it on Monday -- until they got so bored they started popping their Thunderstix.

I watched the 1st Period on Vs HD and said to my wife the Slugs were going to destroy the Flyers in the 2nd. They couldn't get the puck out of their zone and the Slugs missed an open net at least 3 times. So I go in the other room for intermission and never come back because, well, it's a Slugs game and I hate them. I could still hear it though and all I heard was "Score!"......."Score"......."Score"......."Score"........ Needless to say, I turned it completely off for the 3rd.

Luckily, if we can't pull it of this time, we have the built-in excuse of "we're missing three forwards and one to three d-men from our lineup."

They can beat us every single game this season and it's still our name on the Cup as the 05-06 Champs. Personally, I'd be worried about my team getting such a hot start, if I were them. They'll probably run out of steam before April.
Maybe Wes and Hedi stayed out to rest one more game so they can be in top form to kick the Sabres' ass.

I hear ya', we really have to show our presence on the ice. I think the slow start this year was not suprising to many, they only had two months to rest if you can call it that, all the Cup celebrations, appearances, ect. The Oiler's are just about in the boat as us. We will pick up the tempo and kick some major *ss.

Nice. You are very brave. And the cup thing would be hilarious, but i'm afraid you might get shot. Anyway, have a great time, wear that Canes sweater, and represent our boys. Be very loud so they can hear you. Oh and when its quiet, start yelling "Let's go Canes" and they will be quiet cause last night I thought in the 1st period they were pretty tame and quiet.

Did anyone come here and rub the opener in your face? Serious question, i didnt see it happen but I wouldnt doubt that it did.
This should be a really good game, Buffalo has 16 goals in their last two games (both at home aswell) however I have the feeling that this will be much closer. Both teams have plenty of time to rest up for the game aswell, should be a high flying game.
Go Sabres!

Sorry, but the boys arent on a high horse. They are the best team in the league (record wise) and they beat the worst team in the league (record wise)...a blow out was sure to happen, and please, its the Flyers. They know it was one game and they moved past it last night. Lindy also knows how to hold the reigns if he has to, and he isnt afriad to do it.
I also highly doubt that anyone on the Sabres thinks that you "stink"

I think its going to be a good game too, especially in light of how good the opener was. Both sides are going to play hard with our recent history and give us all something special.
I wish we had our full squad available but Id much rather test our depth now than later in the season/playoff race or playoffs themselves. One of the biggest parts of a championship caliber team is having the depth to deal with injuries.
I do remember when Ottawa was the big bad early in the season last year steamrolling all opposition till we broke their streak. It would be nice to do the same again this year. :D

This might be an early season WAR between two teams that believe they can win the Cup. The first game took a shootout to decide. In game 2 of the 4-game season series, both teams want to make a statement, and I think there will be hits, speed, skating, and the bad blood will simmer a little hotter.
The home crowd is a huge lift for Buffalo. They have chants, they openly love their team with a passion that borders on insanity. (Well, if you lived in Buffalo...) The new Buffaslug jersey is outselling everything else out there.
But the Canes are finding their Road Groove.
I smell another shootout.

Stillman is so good a doing nothing that Nic forgot who he was!
Forward Cory Stillman, who underwent shoulder surgery this offseason and is not expected to be available before late November, returned to the ice briefly after Wednesday's practice to test a new pair of skates. Defenseman Niclas Wallin jokingly introduced himself to Stillman when he saw Stillman suiting up to take the ice after the team practiced.

here's what we look forward to if we beat the slugs:
The traditional "Escargots à la bourguignonne"
First prepare the "beurre d'escargots"
Butter of Escargot "a la Burgundy"
1 kilogram of butter (about 2 lbs)
25 grams of salt
5 grams of black pepper
150 grams of garlic
35 grams of shallot or scallions
90 grams of parsley
Garlic, shallot and parsley are chopped very fine. The whole is well mixed.
About 23 Buffaslugs
(Personal proportions can be modified. For example some people prefer have more shallots)
In each empty shell, place a little of this butter. Then push a cooked buffaslug into the shell. Fill the remaining space in the shell completely and smoothly with butter. Usually 5 grams are used for a shell (a tea spoon). Put in the oven (200 °C or 390 °F) just enough time needed to melt the butter. Serve immediately in special plates with holes. (Buffaslugs are picked with a special little fork).
Variations : The following is an extract of a letter received from Jean-Paul Boucher, professor of Cuisine in Dijon who also provided several other good recipes below.
"One or two recommendations that will permit variations in enjoyment :
In the traditional Butter of Buffaslug "a la Bourguignonne" add 0.1 liter of the aperitif Anise or some grains of Anise.
Enjoy yourself : You can also add 100 grams to 150 grams of mustard that will give a delicate aroma. Try the escargot with mustard with grains. Without meaning to advertise for anyone, the one address I found for strong mustard with grains is Ets. FALLOT 212000 BEAUNE.
These two tricks, aside from the aroma that they bring that will also facilitate the digestion of Buffaslug for those who have a delicate liver."

The traditional "Escargots à la bourguignonne"
Well, the special little fork is a nice touch. But the last (and only) time I ate excargots, I ended up extremely sick.
Some road kill should be left in the ditch rather than sauteed in butter .

You know, I never would have believed I would say it, but there was one excellent thing that came out of losing to Detroit in 2002, and it was this quote from Former anchorman goalie and fan favorite of the Buffalo Sabres, Dominik Hasek, stepping up to the microphone during the Stanley Cup Celebration, full well knowing that many a Buffalo fan was watching and was happy for him having won the cup (Like Boston Fans Watching Bourque in an Avs uni or St. Louis fans seeing Weight in a Canes Uni lift the cup):
“I am, and always will be, a VRrred Ving forever.”
And without swinging came that verbal slap to the face to all sabres fans everywhere.

This team is going to get slaughtered tonight. We simply can't compete with the likes of Buffalo. Staal is a cake-eating slug himself who's never going to score another goal. Williams got his 3 for the season already. Cole can't even stay on his skates. Brindy looks lost. Belanger and his hair should just go on back to LA. The defense is a bunch of amateurs. Cam couldn't stop an actual Buffalo from going in the net. We're doomed, in this game and the season. It's over.

Aha! That is what Buffalo should have done last year instead of having a paper thin defensive corps of paper tigers -- bring Housley out of retirement to skate the blueline with Teppo in old-school Winnipeg Jets style.
It's funny, that thing called "depth". Our GM made a plan "B" for injuries on the blueline. With Kaberle, Wesley, and Hedican out we still bring out NHL players. (Yes, Tanabe counts. I suppose.) We see a weak point and make a trade to bolster it.
Buffalo is an incredibly skilled and deep team. But what happens when a couple of defensemen go down with injuries this year, Sabres fans? Those who do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them. You might win all 82 regular season games but if you don't have 8 D-men good luck once the going gets tough. Paetsch is still in your top 7. Teppo is 38 years old. (Love the way he plays but he's still 38.) Spacek plays a full season about once every 4 years. We're going to see Jeff Jillson this year, aren't we? Losing McKee this off-season will hurt more than you might even think when it really counts.
Right now we're showing a bit thin up front, with Stillman out for quite a while, and Ladd and Letowski out. But you know what, that's why we picked up a bunch of folks to send to and from Albany. It's an 82 game regular season, and then the real wars begin. Wars of attrition.
I'll say it. Buffalo isn't tough enough to outlast the warriors of the NHL.
You took us in a game 1 shootout (without Stillman and Kaberle; with Hedican hobbled). Hell you might even take us tonight.
But your team doesn't have what it takes to survive 82 games and 16 wins when it counts. You know it. I know it. Everybody knows it.
Buffalo -- this year's 2005-2006 Ottawa Senators. This year's 2003-2004 Detroit Red Wings.
Enjoy that President's Trophy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidents'_Trophy) albatross you're skating for. You're skilled, you're fast. You're just as deep as you were last year. But that's not enough. You can put up 9-goal games against the Flyers of the league all season long. But you've peaked in week one of the season, baby. You've shown your cards, all of 'em. They're nice. They're a full house, sure. But when the chips are down, that's not four of a kind. That's not a royal flush. And when you start losing the wrong cards (again) you'll have what, two pair? Hell, a straight beats that.
And please tell me you're not doing the rotating captaincy again. If so, face it, you're doomed. DOOMED.

I did have to LMAO because in the Game thread from that SabresSpace website has people wondering "what the hell" BEEP BEEP means.
Sssssshhhh.
But yeah - just another place that slams us fans and talks about how they took over our arena. yawn. Someone talking about Game 5 and how it wasn't so hostile (uh yeah - that's after the debacle of Sabre fan behavior at Game 1 and how there were RPD every 10 yards and babysitting the Sabre fans in the parking lot for every game after that, lol).

The blog on your site is really good, especially a recent post about Drury keeping people grounded. But (as all forums) fans from one team probably shouldn't read fans from another team's message boards :)
I agree. I can't stand Staal and his diving crap.
Now please note, that unlike Flyers fans I am not calling for him to get plowed through the boards from behind. I'll settle for him going home with no points and another notch in the L column.
That said, I certainly wouldn't mind Campbell "Umberger'ing" him 2 minutes into the first, but I doubt it's gonna happen.
I really expect that someone will be dumb enough to run Miller and it will be gloves off.
It's just not productive! Well, maybe at least one:
Am I missing something here? Why the hell are they saying "BEEP BEEP"?
Please. Nobody break the silence. Let them wonder...

This is just plain silly. Yes, injuries do occur and crap happens. Yet, it still took a freak staph infection the day before game 7 and a come from behind win in the 3rd period for you guys to nip us at the buzzer.
If anything, it showed how incredible our depth was last year to lose so many players, yet still be within a gnat's ass of playing for the Cup.

Yet, it still took a freak staph infection the day before game 7 and a come from behind win in the 3rd period for you guys to nip us at the buzzer.
Actually, it took people wearing red sweaters putting more pucks behind Miller than your folks put past Ward for us to win in that game. Also, I wasn't aware that Rod's goal with 8:38 on the clock was "at the buzzer". Or that 2 goals was a "nip".
But keep focusing on the fact that, apparently, the universe itself rose up to smite your team. That's what having 2 captains gets you. One team, one cup, one captain.
You can have your mocked up videos showing your fake championship in a world where 6 defensemen is deep enough. I'll be over here in the real world where it's a certainty that the grind will wear you down, and you'd better have horses in the stall.
It does show an amazing amount of depth that you hung in there so long, given the injuries keeping people out of the lineup. But it shows that this exact amount of depth, the same exact amount of depth you've got this year, basically, wasn't enough. We had people in the lineup skating on hips without cartilege. With shoulders that will keep them out 6 months into this season.
Maybe Buffalo fans are too busy making fantasy videos that they ignore the fact that when we lost players to injury and looked ahead to the playoffs, we made deals instead of excuses. That they ignore that if, say, one of the 80 or however many defensemen they lost to injury were playing, perhaps the entire series changes. Maybe Briere doesn't score the OT goal in game 6 and the Canes win in 6, because Fitzy wouldn't have been on the ice at the time to get the primary assist. Who knows.

If Jack Johnson turns into a 6 foot 6 inch albatross for teams chasing the Cup, so be it. But I doubt he will. (Particularly the height part.)
You need to go help Miller lovingly caress his left goalpost. *wave*
(And I wonder if you even know our franchise traded the "first" Pronger... my guess is no, or you would have said "another" Pronger. So good luck learning some of the game's history, chump: we traded Pronger to the Blues for Brendan Shanahan. And Shanahan went with Brian Glynn (who?) to Detroit for Keith Primeau, Paul Coffey, and a first round pick. Primeau was in turn traded to Philly for Rod Brind'Amour and Jean-Marc Pelletier. Brindy led us to a Cup. So far so good.)
So, head back to whatever hole you crawled out of and hang with your own kind until you get some original game. Then you can come and play. Until then you're just embarassing yourself and your fellow Sabres fan.

Kind of off topic, but can anybody send me in the direction of the Ric Flair "That's another Carolina Hurricanes Goal" .mp3?
Try this link:

You should be able to convert it from video to an audio file.

Sucks that we lost, but a hell of a game to watch, between two well-matched teams. I give a personal star to Commodore, dude was on fire tonight.
Heck, yeah!!! Gotta show the love for Commie tonight. Several great defensive plays and, man oh man, that goal he made!!! Shorthanded, at that! I thought all the defensemen played smart tonight except for a couple of Gleason turnovers. Even Tanabe did better than usual.
It was a heckava game, well played on both sides and the Canes have nothing to be ashamed of. Playing against a hot team on a winning streak and the Canes have how many injured players? Great effort.

Bottom line is we scored on a 2 man disadvantage when the Slugs couldn't even score on a 2 man advantage. We stayed in the game until the very end fighting against a team that most media has declared unbeatable. We did all this with all the injuries that we have. I am not upset about tonight’s game at all. I actually think that the Slugs (team and coach) are probably not happy at all about tonight’s game. The Slug fans are probably still in la la land and don't realize that their team didn't out play us; Ryan Miller didn't outplay Cam Ward. For the most part all was equal tonight.
Just my thoughts on the game for whatever it is worth.
Goodnight.

Because it seems we get mostly trolls here, I thought I'd copy a Sabres fan's post from an NHL thread at another forum I post to (the overall forum is entertainment, not sports, so it's a tiny group of us in the NHL thread), just because it's probably good to remember that not all of the fans up there are thugs and putzes. (Hope it's OK to do this -- I know some forums don't allow content from or linking to other forums.)
Oh, my Lord. I hope something wipes you guys out before the playoffs, Canes fans, because I'm telling you right now that I cannot handle another playoff series with you. Our teams are so similiar and so evenly matched that it's like torture watching them play. *Great* hockey though. And I think I'd say that even if we lost. That was an amazing game.
I told her the Sabres could sit out the '07 playoffs. =.)
ARG!! We were so close! Good game though. Too bad we didn't get at least a point for the effort.

Not to be contrary, but am I the only one who saw Commodore as personally responsible for two goals against? He was just chillin' in front of the net while Afinogenov camped out on the back post.

Just got home...haven't watched it yet, but I saw the score and heard some details.
We shouldn't feel bad about this one. First off, we lost to a great team. I despise the team, their fans, their coach and their god-awful jerseys but they are a great team (with no depth who will go stone-cold come April, I hope, but great, still).
Secondly, we hung with said great team despite a lot of injuries. Sabres fans can't go getting all high and mighty over this win or they totally nullify their own whiny complaints about their injuries last year. They didn't play our real team.
Third, we still have the Cup.....here in the SOUTH....and that still kills their fans.
Oh well....off to watch the game cause I hear it was worth it!!

I will be sitting down and watching this game when I get home from my friend's house (the Haunted Houses and Orchards were AWESOME), but I'm with RIO.
Too bad we couldn't have gotten a point. :( But it sounds like it was a good game, with a lot of scoring too, can't go wrong with that!
Ah, I'm also with SHC. We still have the Cup, which still kills the Buffanuts. :smoke:
I'll drink to that, and tomorrow's game against the Islanders! w00t! :D

OK, 14;48 in the second, tied 1-1, so I'm obviously not blaming anything on it but so far....the officiating is REALLY suspect.

Wow. Nice of them to call Whit for hooking and ignore that HUGE Sabres slash just before.
I'm not seeing where we've checked out of the third like some people mentioned. Buffalo can make you look bad. I don't see where we've slacked off effort one bit.
OMG. So, BRINDY gets called for holding the stick? How about Vanek holding HIM on the way into the zone?!?
Wow. Some crappy calls, IMO. All game long, both ways but this end of the game 5 on 3 REALLY hurts.
So, not much sound out of the fans until they're in the lead, huh? Nice to see they're as gutless at home as they are here.

Hell of a game. Not sure why you think it was quiet in that building - the MSG feed up here maybe has more crowd noise? I don't know. What I do know is that this rivalry just keeps on getting better and better.
Ward looked VERY shaky last night. I think pulling the plug on Gerber may have been premature. He's a solid netminder and one of the reasons why the Canes were so deep last year - having two top-of-the-line goaltenders is key for a dynamic team.

So did Miller. What about it?

Gerber wanted to be a starter and wasn't going to sign here. No one pulled the plug on him. Even if he did want to sign, it would have been for a single year only, since we'll have to pay Cam Ward next season and can't afford $7 million for a pair of goalies.
BTW, have you seen Gerber play this year? He's not exactly looking Roy-like, either. All of Cam's stats are better than Gerber's, even including last night in the averages.
On the upside (and downside), Cam leads the league in saves.

Gerbs is 1-3 w/the Sens right now with a 3.31 GAA. His save % is .898. He also lost against the Sabres. I'm not sure he'd be doing any better with the Canes at this point in time. Emery's stats with Ottawa are better than Gerbs are right now.
Ward is 3-3 w/the Canes with a 2.97 GAA and his save % is .905. I'm sure all is good in the Canes world right now regarding goalies. I know I'm okay with it. For now ;)

I think we played well but not great last night. I realize that Buffalo's tempo can make teams look silly and we hung in there, it just wasn't our best night. We did not make Ryan Miller work hard enough out there. Our neutral zone play was so-so although I realize that Buffalo forced us to play that way. I also thought our power play was hap-hazard again and Cam was good but not awesome.
Now that I got the negatives out of way...Scott Walker continues to make me happy. What a slap shot! Given the injuries and the cobbled together lines I thought we hung in there pretty well. And the shorthand 3 on 5 goal is why I love this team. They never quit even though they could have easily thrown in the towel. That's the Canes never-say-die spirit I want to keep seeing out there.

OK, even OUR FREAKING NEWSPAPER has more quotes from Sabres players than Canes! WTF is going on?!? Did the Sabres buy the planet during the off-season? Cause from my seat, the whole world seems to be one big Buffalo Sabres advertisement lately! GEEZ!
"We didn't play that great in preseason," Sabres defenseman Brian Campbell said. "We didn't play that great in Carolina. I don't think we played that great the next game, at home against Montreal. We've been much better the last couple games than we were at the start of the season. The last 2 1/2 games, maybe. It's just a case of starting to play our system better. Things got a little rough there, like every team goes through."
Wait, when did it "get a little rough"? You're undefeated! If he really thinks things have been rough they really will be in trouble round about April.

Imho, Ward played well, considering the quality of our opponent. Ask Esche how difficult it is to man the net against the Sabres. In a battle of two closely matched teams, the Sabres just happened to have luck on their side last night. The Buffalo goal post had to be the first star of the game.
I am not worried. The 'Canes will get even better with time--especially once everyone gets healthy again. We've already seen vast improvements. The end of October is quickly approaching, and Stillman's return is just around the corner. The Sabres are currently enjoying a healthy team, but we all know that could change in a New York minute.
Btw, check out this quote from the Sabres' own Teppo Numminen, regarding their "small crowds" at the beginning of last season. As Buffalo fans continue to brag about their "rich history" and their overwhelming, unfleeting support of the Sabres, it seems this support is strictly fairweather. Here's the link (6th paragraph):

Good morning, Caniacs.
First off, let me get this out of the way: I am a Sabres fan and have been since the early 70's. I do not consider myself a troll, though: I just enjoy reading other teams forums from time to time. I usually register but rarely post on them, though. I post regularly on sabrespace.com (http://www.sabrespace.com/) (far better than the "official" one on the Sabre website) where I saw (and responded to) caveman posting.
Next, please allow me to state that I have never used the "injury defense" of last year's Sabre's loss to the Canes in the ECF. It was the most entertaining series of playoff hockey last season and possibly ever. Two very evenly matched teams, two great coaches and a full 7 games. That being said, I have to take exception to the following quote (sorry to single anyone out, but I saw similiar ones throughout this thread and on the boards leading up to this game).
Secondly, we hung with said great team despite a lot of injuries.
Stop. Did I just read that right? Using injuries as an excuse? I saw elsewhere on these forums where the Buffalo GM was bashed for not having foreseen 4 starting defensemen getting injured at once and trading better before the deadline to bolster the 7-10 spots on the defense depth chart. Shouldn't the Cane's GM foreseen the future and bolstered the depth chart in order to prevent a loss last night? Doesn't this make Canes fans "whiny complainers?"
Sabres fans can't go getting all high and mighty over this win or they totally nullify their own whiny complaints about their injuries last year.
Stop. I am sorry, but this is backward. I am not defending the Sabre loss in game 7 with an injury report but shouldn't this read more like: "The Canes fans can't use injuries as an excuse for this loss or they totally nullify thier ignoring injuries in the Game 7 win over the Sabres." If Canes fans can ignore injuries for a win, the Sabre fans can as well.
They didn't play our real team.
Classic. You beat the "real" Sabres in Game 7 but the Sabres beat the Mini-Canes last night.
Face it: these are two great teams and will play each other at least 3 more times this year. If nothing else, we can be promised 3 more truly entertaining games. Winning any game is fun, but it is more fun against a great team. We will all have wins over Filthy-delphia, the Cry-landers and the Maple Laughs, but games like last night are a hell of alot more fun.

All those were said tongue-in-cheek.
Our boards were deluged with Sabres fans who did that very thing after the playoffs last year, hence our little bit of levity in regard to the injuries subject.
If you know SHC a little better, you'd pick up on that.

Yeah everyone knows that the Sabres have the best of everything. Their arena is the loudest, it's the tallest, it has the biggest circumferance, their hot dogs are the best, their beer is colder, their ice is icier, the railings are painted better, the angle of their ramps is better, their parking is superior, their janitorial crew is top notch, their urinals ALL have fresh cakes in them, no spot on their concourse floor is slippery, they keep all cooked foods at higher than the proper temperature, etc. etc. etc.
It's a Sabres universe, y'all.

Tallest? Um, k. The Greensboro Coliseum had more seats than any arena in the league...that had nothing to do with attendance or volume.
I do find it pretty funny that they don't grasp e-peens OR irony in Buffalo, though.

This was game 8 of the season. If come game 40 we don't like our depth and we look to have a shot at a playoff run, I can definitely see us making a deal or two to pick up some depth. (If we have anything to deal after last year's deals and the JJ deal.)

Wow, are you serious?? It has everything to do with volume
The fact that it is the tallest only has a relation to the volume in the Arena (its harder to fill a big Arena with noise then it is to fill a smaller Arena), not the capacity. The capacity has nothing to do with what we were talking about, so I dont know why you would go in that direction....Also, the RBCC has a higher capacity.
