1980 U.S. Hockey Team Headed To 'Hall'

POSTED: 5:53 p.m. EDT June 24, 2003

EVELETH, Minn. -- The entire 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team is going into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Hall said the entire squad will be enshrined at a ceremony on Oct. 18. The U.S. team posted a shocking 4-3 victory over the Soviet Union in the semifinals on their way to beating Finland 4-2 for the Olympic gold medal at Lake Placid, N.Y.

The 1980 Olympic coaching staff, general manager, team physician, trainer, equipment manager, chairman of the U.S. Olympic Hockey Committee and all 20 players will be enshrined.

Four other players also will be enshrined that day -- Pat LaFontaine, Mark Howe, John Cunniff and Dick Dougherty.

LaFontaine also was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto earlier this month

I went to the hall of fame last summer with my father and brother. It was really nice. There were some fun games to play (try and hit the puck at targets, put on goalie equipment and try to stop pucks that shoot out of holes on a video screen that shows players shooting at you, etc.) and a bunch of stuff to look at. The trophy room has all the awards complete with an enermous poster of the cup winning team's photograph you see when you enter (I'm assuming they change it on a yearly basis). The hockey hall of fame is definitely worth checking out.

I'm interested in seeing how the movie based on this team is going to end up being, I believe it's called "Miracle" with Kurt Russell. Despite it being a hockey movie, perhaps it will generate a decent box office return if it gets good reviews since this is such a major moment in all of sports history. I believe the cinematography for the hockey scenes was being praised, that's good to hear.

I thought Mystery, Alaska was okay and the hockey scenes looked great but to me the hockey scenes in the Mighty Ducks movies always seemed a bit silly. Just tons and tons of fadeouts, etc. And if you want to talk realistically, there's just no way that with the score tied 0-0, with the Ducks down two men due to a roughing penalty and a subsequent too many men on the ice penalty, and the opposing team being the best in the college hockey world, the Ducks are able to go on a shorthanded two on none breakaway and Goldberg is able to sit and sit and sit and sit and sit and think about shooting and then finally put it in the net at the hornafter Charlie passes it to him. That's just absurd and makes me cringe. Scoring at the horn is one thing but a situation like that is just preposterous. They should've just let the damn thing go into OT and then have Charlite get a breakaway and do a quintiple deke or so and net the game winner. How dumb. I liked the first two Ducks movies but part 3 was a travesty.

In terms of "Miracle", I'm assuming they will just be sticking to the plot of what really happened for the most part which is good.
