It is a great cause and event guys...we have mentioned before, the celebrities are VERY accessible...I have seen some celebs let people come out of the crowd and hit their golfball...

and if you do want to volunteer, it is a great experience!! I have met many wonderful people in the 10 years I have been with the Classic! :)

Ladies and gentlemen...get your video cameras! Barry Melrose in North Carolina and I'm sure he's going to LOVE this event! He will be surrounded by lots of Canes fans who, despite Barry's comments in the past, will surely welcome the guy with that familiar Southern hospitality. That's awesome of him to attend! You know I'm going to pull his name for standard bearer and then try my darndest to not cringe when I hear the phrase "when I was coaching Gretsky" right?!? :D Ok Canes fans...this is your sworn duty...come out to the V and show this guy what a wonderful place we all live in...hockey and otherwise!

I'm planning to come throw rotten vegies at him and curse him in my southern accent. Is that what you meant by "Southern Hospitality"? ;)

Does it usually have a really big crowd out there?

Yes it does...but that's not really any different from most golf tournaments, for charity and not. I'm really contemplating going to the Jimmy V because I've never really been to any golf tournament before, and JV sounds really fun and well organized. The trick for me though is going to be getting someone to go with me...which will definitely not be a piece of cake...the easy choice would be my dad, but getting old has made him more prone to complaining about it being hot and humid and asking me "Why the heck do you want to go to that?". But being someone who overall enjoys golf the most in my family besides me and my brother and having been to the Greater Greensboro Open a couple of times, my dad would be a natural choice for accompanying me to the Jimmy V...wish me luck on getting him or someone else to go.

I think so, and that's not really my concern...my concern is do you *have* to be there at 8:30 AM? If you do, oh boy...there's no way on Earth I'll find someone to go with me if that's the case. The only person I can think of who would be willing to go with an 8:30 arrival/start time is a friend of mine (The same one who occasionally gets tickets to Canes games at his job.) who is an early-riser, but probably wouldn't want to skip church...

Yes maam...Sunday is the only day open ... Saturday is prep day to get ready for everyone...

The biggest estimated crowd we have had was 30,000 ...last year didn't seem like that many..but they play on 3 courses and the crowds are really spread out.....the players are very accessible... ;)

The best thing to do is park yourself on the course of your choice..if you have a favorite or two that you are looking for... at one point, two of the courses meet so that is a good spot to see most of the golfers....when you get there, Pairings Sheets will be given to tell you where everyone is....course wise and tee hole wise...and a good time to get autographs and see most is when they finish up and head down the path to the clubhouse....hope you guys can make it out..and SB it usually starts around 9-9:30 and it is a shotgun start... I will be making the bagtags again with my sis...so I can tell you ahead of time where someone is... ;)

except of course for O..that is my "little secret" :D :p ;)

Yep...at Hecht's. Go in there, and head to the Customer Service/Gift Wrapping area, which is near the Godiva chocolates, china and silver, and kitchenware/cooking goodies. The Customer Service desk is also a TicketMaster outlet. Besides the aforementioned Jimmy V ticket, I've also gotten my Canes tickets there.

McAngel is correct. The Jimmy V crew knows that the players are very popular so I am sure they are the first ones they consider. But the same ones come back year after year, so I would assume that they contact the V and tell them they want to participate. Glad to see them all attending!!

Kudos to Mona, MCAngel and anyone else who was volunteering today. The event was a lot of fun and very well organized. Props to Mona for appearing in the Program in the volunteer profile section. :D

We saw and spoke to Bates, Pete Karmanos, Ronnie, Hill, Cole, Tripp, Chuck, Shane Willis, Jesse, Brind'Amour, and JR. All as nice as could be. We missed O'Neill, I heard he was wearing flip flops but he was never really convenient to catch up to. Saw Ward and Wesley in passing. Never did see Mo or Melrose.

All the celebs were great, Carla Overbeck was great to my kids too - very chatty. I literally ran into Sendek just wandering along the cart path - his wife was playing and driving the cart.

Canesluver would have been proud of me, I made sure to make some small remark to each person that stopped for a photo. ;)

Oh my gosh...was that a TON of fun. This was my very first Jimmy V Golf Classic, and it just ROCKED. I don't know where to begin...all the Canes I got to meet and have a photo with, getting to see Dean Smith and other great celebrities (All of whom were very nice and great to everyone), or just what an absolutely wonderful cause the Jimmy V is and how awesome it was to see so many people in attendance for it.

Here were the Canes I met and got photos with...

Bates Battaglia, Jesse Boulerice, Rod Brind'Amour, Erik Cole, Jeff Daniels, Ron Francis, Bret Hedican, Sean Hill, Paul Maurice, Jeff O'Neill, and Tripp Tracy.

Canes I saw...

Chuck Kaiton, Jason Karmanos, and Aaron Ward

Other celebs I saw...

Chris Berman, John Daly, Matt Doherty, Tony Kornheiser, Sidney Lowe, Barry Melrose, Dean Smith, and Kay Yow.

Stuff I got...

A navy blue golf shirt and a program for my brother, and a t-shirt (Featuring a ball in the rough near a green, and the "Don't give up..." quote.) and a program for myself.

Pictures shall come soon courtesy of Amanda/Hyena...many thanks to her for transporting, accompanying, and taking the pictures of me and the Canes at this ABSOLUTELY GREAT event! :spin: :D

And yes, many, MANY thanks to those who volunteer like Mona and MCAngel! Congrats Mona on your profile in the program. :)

Glad O put some shoes on, I overheard some folks saying how it was a big "no-no" , so maybe the boy follows rules now and then!

Boy was it good to see BATES!!! Everyone i saw and got a picture with was extremly nice....esp. Erik Cole - he is such a great guy! Bates really knows how to make the crowd laugh. There was music coming from a house and he wasted no time to start dancing to it. After he teed off he made a comment about almost hitting "a tyridactl" flying above (It was a hawk). He is such a goof! Im really gonna miss him too...

One thing that kinda made me mad was that Jeff Oneill seemed a little annoyed every time someone asked for a picture or an autograph. I think that he can be a bit of a jerk sometimes, but thats just my opinion. (I still consider him one of my fav's though)

Overall i had a great time and I can't wait until the hockey season starts!!!

Totally OT, but 15?

Nice photos SB/Amanda. :)

Mona, was attendance pretty typical? I know there were a great number of people at that spot where all the courses converged kind of in the center of the map and then again at the Prestonwood clubhouse, but further out on the course the crowds thinned considerably.

After a long walk in the sun, we rested in the shade at a tee box and we and the marshalls were the only ones there for quite some time. I think when Jesse came through there were probably 5 additional people. Same when we caught up to Ronnie, just us and the folks that lived along the fairway of that hole.

I had to laugh at one of the houses that was having a party, they had a margarita machine and a big sign that said "Free Margaritas for Celebrities", lol.

Just one question SB. Did someone forget to tell O'Neill that Sunday was the gray shirt with the #19 on the breast day. Everyone but him has one on in your pictures. Leave it to O to buck the trend however.m Oops, Hedican didn't get the message either.

Great pics Caroline...and you know that I am very envious of ONE of them!! :p ;)

Eileen where we were working, there was not a lot of people so it was hard to imagine what the crowd looked like. But as we made our way to the main course, it looked pretty typical, maybe a little more than last year. I think our average is somewhere between 20-30,000....on three courses of that size it is hard to guestimate, but from what I saw at the intersection of the courses and the clubhouse course exits, it looked good!!
And that house has a party every year...it is tradition. The year Kevin Costner came, he went over and carried the woman that lives there, around in his arms. :D

It was a great day for the memory of a great man and a worthy cause. It warms my heart to see your posts with your stories and your pics. I am so glad some of you could make it out and have such a wonderful time! ;) :spin:

All the golfers wore the Jimmy V golf shirts, it actually had a "10" on the breast, with the signature "V" thru the number (which is why it might look like a 19).

Maybe since Hedican could only manage 9 holes they didn't give him a shirt. ;)

Well, if rumors are true, he was also wearing sandals instead of golf shoes, but immediately switched to golf shoes. So, I'll honestly have to say that I am not surprised about O and the shirt...he probably didn't think it was stylish enough. ;)

I had to laugh at one of the houses that was having a party, they had a margarita machine and a big sign that said "Free Margaritas for Celebrities", lol.

Was that the same house that had the music cranked up, or a different one? The music there was so loud, that you could hear it all the way on the other side of the Fairways.

Also, glad all of you liked the pictures and thanks. :)

Nice bunch of pictures folks ! Haven't gotten mine developed yet.

What a beautiful day! It was so nice just to be walking around the courses, seeing all those beautiful houses overlooking the greens. It was a fantastic day. We weren't too lucky with seeing folks but we weren't disappointed...the day was too nice.

Got great pictures with Bates. Teased the heck out of him! He had a superb shot and my husband said "hey Bates you may be in the wrong sport", Bates didn't miss a beat...his reply "yeah wait until you see my next shot" and everyone laughed. We asked him if he wanted to take his shot before autographs and he said "Oh no" and came over and signed stuff and he came right over to the girls and took pictures with them and one with me. He came out from the ropes so it was more intimate. What a guy. He will always be a Hurricane for us.

The best, Rod. We were at his last hole and no one was around. We had been sitting on a bench near the tee off and he got out of his cart and came right up to us! Again, right past the ropes. He said anyone need autographs and we all said sure ! He took pictures with our girls and then I jumped in there and he said..."and one for mom". He came back and stood talking to my husband and was so friendly. They say he is one of the shyest, not yesterday !

Disappointment of the day...Ron. He was being very protected with the ropes. Not much conversation with fans. If someone did say something like "thanks" or "nice shot" his comments were a shake of the head or a muttered thanks. We followed him for 4 holes and just got a quick shot. My girls said "thanks very much" and he just said "yup". I have been in two situations where it was one on one with Ron for autographs and both times I was disappointed. They say he is shy but his shyness sure does come off as arrogance or "couldn't be bothered". Okay, it was kind of hot, working 15+ holes with everyone asking for your autograph but that's what it's all about. We're all donating to the cause in some form or another...well I just expected more. After Bates and Rod...and what you all say about Erik and Sean (another super person with the fans)...just disappointing. I think he's hanging around "O" too much and picking up his bad habits...

Oh well..felt good about the day. Mona sorry we couldn't find you. We ran into Hyena and Stormbringer...that was fun.

Well, since O'Neill was mentioned I'll share something that was posted by someone on the N&O board.

O'Neill was awesome! He was signing everything and taking pictures with everyone. He even brought 2 little kids onto the green with him on one hole and let another little kid hit a tee shot later on in the round. Not really sure where he gets his bad rep from, but if the naysayers were there, I think they may have a different view of him

Perhaps they all, Ronnie included, have their off days.

Stormbringer
08-25-2003, 11:40 AM
Regarding Ronnie...I do agree with those who say he is shy. When I was at the March 28th practice last season, Ronnie came out and signed everything in sight (At least twenty-thirty items!) and hardly made any eye contact or said any words. The only words he did say were "Wow. Is there any room on this?" when a little girl handed him a hat literally covered in signatures. I think Ronnie's attitude is along the lines of Mr. Darling of the Andy Griffith Show's "Eating speaks more than words.", except replace "Eating" with "Signing".

With that said, I found Ronnie to be a pleasant person yesterday...then again, maybe it's because Amanda and I managed to catch him during the real early part of the tournament, before it got REAL HOT. Yes, Ronnie was quiet, but I was impressed with him and his attitude...especially after getting a photo with Boulerice, who never put a hand on my back or arm around my neck or shoulder like the others did. Don't get me wrong, I was impressed with the Bull's attitude too, a very nice dude like the others. But between the two, I would have never pegged Ronnie to be the one who would put a hand on my back...the Bull's shyness in that regard kind of took me by surprise.

Am working on the proper report right now...should be up sometime this afternoon or (more than likely) tonight.

I think you were just unlucky Rons#1. Maybe he doesn't now you're his #1Fan yet? ;)

Since you had a so-so experience, I'll share ours with Ronnie. My kids both had on those white T's with "Francis" on the back. When we came upon him he was already in the cart and waiting for the lady in his group to tee off from the ladies tee. The boys decided they wanted to wait for him at the next tee box so they ran ahead. I could see Ronnie watching the two of them with their "Francis" shirts going right past him as he sat in the cart and they ran by. Turned out the next hole was a small distance, so when he finally pulled up at the tee box he said "I was wondering where you two disappeared to, I saw you run past me". They were thrilled that he'd even noticed them, lol. He also sort of teased a kid about asking him to sign his Weekes stick "are you sure you want me to sign that?".

When my kids got Ron's signature for their jerseys back in the spring, they waited at the back of the RBC center after practice (only time we've done that, but they were determined to get his after having all the others) and when they saw his car they were jumping and waving and he laughed and took both hands off the wheel and imitated them.

I'm sure it's dumb luck if you get a good or bad experience. You're due though!!

Stormbringer
08-25-2003, 12:06 PM
Very glad your kids had a good experience with Ronnie yesterday, Eileen. His handling of children has always impressed me, especially as quiet and serious as he seems to be. Right after Ronnie teed off in front of Amanda and I, a little girl ran up asking Ronnie to sign something of hers. And his handling of her was enough to make Amanda and I utter a quiet "Awwww..." as we walked away. :)
