Ducks decline option, cut Oates loose

TSN.CA - Fresh off an appearance in last season's Stanley Cup Final, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim are facing some difficult budget choices, and have started making some hard decisions.
TSN has learned that the Ducks have declined to pick up the option they held on Adam Oates' contract, making the veteran centre an unrestricted free agent. Oates, who will turn 41 in late July, was scheduled to make $3.5 million in the upcoming season.
Anaheim G.M. Bryan Murray had earlier offered Oates $2.2 million, but that offer was rejected.
Last season, Oates had nine goals and 45 points in 67 games with the Ducks. He added four goals and 13 points in 21 playoff games and was one of the team's top producers as Anaheim reached the Stanley Cup Final.
In 1,277 NHL games, Oates has 339 goals and 1,402 points.
The most pressing issue for the Ducks regards captain Paul Kariya, and the question of whether or not to give him a qualifying offer. Murray has spoken with Karyia's agent Don Baizley about a multi-year deal at a much lower salary than the $10 million the winger has been making for the last several seasons.
In order to retain Kariya's rights, Anaheim would have to submit a qualifying offer by midnight tonight of $10 million. If they don't, Kariya would become an unrestricted free agent.
Last season, Kariya scored 25 goals and 81 points in 82 games. He scored six goals and 12 points in the Ducks' playoff run.
Kariya has played 606 NHL games, scoring 300 goals and 669 points. The fourth overall pick in 1993, Kariya has played his entire career with the Ducks.

Dang ...can they let Oates and Kariya go?????????
Can they afford to pay $10mill to a 25 goal scorer? I mean, I am a huge Kariya fan and all, but that seems excessive...

my question is, how did it get that high in the first place???
Probably the 50 goal (108 pt) season, followed by some 40 and 30 goal seasons... not entirely sure on that though. Case in point of why multi-season deals are good for players and not for owners...

So in order to even prevent him from being a UFA - they HAVE to offer him 10 mil by midnight. At which time Kariya would likely say "yes, thank you".
Crazy money! :eek2:

Ducks allow Kariya to go unrestricted

TSN has learned that the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim have decided not to make a qualifying offer to Paul Kariya, making their captain an unrestricted free agent at midnight ET.
Had the Ducks qualified Kariya, he would have been paid a salary of $10 million for the fifth consecutive season, a price Anaheim was no longer willing to pay.
The Ducks had offered Kariya a longer term contract but those negotiations have thus far proved unsuccessful. It's still possible that Kariya will re-sign with Anaheim, but it's also possible that he'll sign with another NHL team, leaving the franchise that made him their first ever first round draft pick back in 1993.
Kariya is the Ducks' all time leader in games played, goals, assists and points. This season, he had 25 goals and 81 points in 82 regular season games, and 6 goals and 12 points in 21 games in Anaheim's playoff run. The 25 regular season goals were his lowest total in a full season in his 9 year NHL career.
The Ducks earlier cleared some payroll room by declining to pick up the $3.5 million option on veteran centre Adam Oates. Anaheim's offer of $2.2 million for the coming season was rejected, clearing the way for the 40 year old to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Anaheim had a payroll of $43 million last year, but lost a substantial amount of money, despite getting to the seventhgame of the Stanley Cup Final.
The Ducks are facing another financial hurdle with goaltender J.S. Giguere, the playoff MVP who is a restricted free agent this summer. Giguere, who made $900,000 last season, is likely to be asking for at least six times that amount in a new deal.

seems to me JSG needs to prove his worth over another year before trying to get 6 times his current salary. we are all too familiar with what can happen to a hot goaltender the following year

It'll be interesting. the incredible 10 mil for a qualifying offer makes it understandable that they had to take the chance. I mean, it's not like Kariya is going to get an offer like that from another club. Right??
I suspect there is a good chance that he'll re-sign with the Ducks, but I guess that all depends on his frame of mind.

Giguere's regular season stats were actually marginally better last year than this year, and neither were too shabby.
2002-2003 .92 save% (7th) 2.30 GAA (11th) 34 wins (5th) 8 SO (2nd)
65 rs games played, In playoffs, .945 save% (1st), 1.62 GAA (1st), 5 SO
2001-2002 .92 save% (7th) 2.13 GAA (5th) 25 wins (24th) 4 SO (17th)
53 rs games played, Ducks not in playoffs

A 500% raise?????? I don't give a crap WHAT his stats are. Good thing stats aren't everything, huh? I'd say a good 200% raise at the most ought to be sufficient.
