Very interesting, from ch.com I wonder who "helped" him in his decision to postpone surgery.

Hmm...so does this mean Irbe won't get the start this Saturday in Montreal? I was hoping to see him go out on a good note this year.....

Was this the absolute best thing for Shady 80 to do? I thought they said that if Kevin played anymore, it would make his hand injury worst...

not to mention that he wasn't quite on top of his game on tuesday, and lots of people blamed the injury -- i admire his tenacity but if it's affecting his game then he shouldn't play. i'm sure the powers that be and kevin himself know more about the situation than me though, so i trust their judgement. (i guess...)

I'm not sure about this. The other night I noticed he was a bit iffy with himself. If he's taking one for the team it's all well and good but we still have 8 games to go and the other teams surely know about this. They will go after it (discreetly I'm sure). I realize we currently have a shortage of goalies but why not let Irbe just play out the season. It's not like we have a chance to go to the playoffs. I think he should go ahead, get the surgery done and rest it up. Hey maybe by mid summer he can play golf ;)

Erg...bad call if you ask me, and i'd guess that he was pushed into it. The way he was talking the other day, it needed immediate care ...wonder what spawned this one? maybe at least we can hope for him to backup irbe for the rest of the season and rest his hand..and maybe irbe will play well enough that weekes *CAN* rest his hand.........maybe.

Well, as someone here said earlier, perhaps Irbe's recent good play in Lowell will carry over into the games he plays with the Canes. We can only hope...not only for his sake, but especially for the Canes and Weekes' sake.

Two things I'd like to know - one that will be answered soon enough.

1) What exactly is the injury to his hand/wrist?

2) Will he sit or play?

Prepare to flame, BUT

I feel this is really selfish if it's HIM making this call. If he's pressured, then the rest of this post is insignificant.

Yes, play through injury IF you're in the playoff chase. The only thing we're in is the race for #1 draft pick. Come on Kevin, you still have your spot for next year. We just want to see some of the kids.

Weekes will undergo season-ending surgery for a torn ligament in his right hand

Now I don't know about your hand but I tore a ligament in my knee once and it wasn't THAT bad. Of course I wasn't trying to play NHL hockey with it either. But maybe it's not quite as bad as we had suspected and they really were just getting the surgery over with since there is nothing at stake. But now that we are down another goalie they realize it can wait. Guess we'll never know for sure what went on.

I don't think this is very smart...there's only a few games left, the season is down the toilet...why risk serious injury to your #1 goalie for next year? It's a mystery to me.

I think that they are doing this because they honestly have no other choice. With Desrochers and Weekes both out, they would have to leave either Lowell or the Everblades with no goalies. The Everblades are in the playoffs, so that really wasn't possible. Lowell is not, but you can't send Weekes down (waivers). Weekes most probably will sit for the remaining 8 games, and is really just still in the game as a placeholder.

Here's what I don't understand--to coin a movie phrase, "Explain it like I'm 10...":

If he can get the surgery now and recover that much quicker, he will be ready early and can start working earlier. Then he will be ready earlier, start the season better. Yes, it's only a couple weeks, but we've all seen what a couple of weeks more last season did to us.

What are we risking?

Did you see the mention somewhere (N&O maybe) about borrowing Rhodes earlier in the year? They must have thought that too!

From today's N&O. I doesn't indicate that Weekes won't ever start, but rather not in Montreal. Guess we'll see on Tuesday...

Weekes postpones surgery; Irbe to start
By LUKE DECOCK, Staff Writer

With the Carolina Hurricanes facing a numbers crisis in net, goalie Kevin Weekes has agreed to delay surgery on his injured right hand until after the NHL season.

Weekes had been scheduled for season-ending surgery today, but with backup Patrick DesRochers out for the season with what has been confirmed as a broken arm, Weekes decided to postpone surgery on the painful injury.

The Canes recalled Arturs Irbe from Lowell (AHL) on Wednesday, and he is expected to start Saturday against the Canadiens at Montreal. Weekes cannot play without a pain-killing shot in his hand, which is difficult to obtain in Canada for insurance reasons.

With DesRochers out and Weekes scheduled for surgery, the Canes had been short two goalies in their system with eight games remaining. That crisis was averted when Weekes decided to wait until season's end and Lowell obtained Jayme Platt on loan from an ECHL team.

I think Weekes should have the surgery and get on with the recovery.

My concern is that he'll end up playing and get one of those "can you believe that freak accident" kind of injuries such as having his head rammed into the goal post. Oh, he's been there and done that!

But it is his decision along with JR and company. They didn't ask my opinion. They seem to think they can run this team without me ;)

WHAT'S UP YA'LL!!!!! Finally got back on here after a rough week in the trenches (and no internet at work!).

Guin & I shared the opinion Tuesday night that Weekes should have been pulled after the 2nd period Tuesday night. He was struggling. Why not give DesRochers the play time so he can at least get some experience under his belt (although I heard from someone he's injured, too?)?

I swear I looked thru the other threads, but couldn't find this mentioned anywhere else. I think we know why Weekes is playing....

(now just 1 more game to get the 50 game bonus...)

FRINGE BENEFITS: Kevin Weekes started his first game Tuesday since delaying surgery on his injured right hand until after the season.

His decision to put off the operation scheduled for last Friday bailed the Canes out of a goaltending crisis after Patrick DesRochers was lost for the season with a broken arm, but it also could prove lucrative.

Weekes is close to a number of bonuses in his contract that could pay him as much as $300,000.

Weekes played in his 48th game Tuesday, bringing him closer to a $100,000 bonus for playing in 50 games.

With 14 wins, he is also on the verge of a $100,000 bonus for winning 15. And Weekes also has a shot at $50,000 bonuses for goals-against average and save percentage.

Weekes made $1.5 million this season and is a restricted free agent this summer.

Boy, I certainly hope he is not being penny wise and pound foolish. Sure it's nice to get a bonus like that (that's the understatement of the year), but if he does more damage to his hand and delays his rehab he may regret that come September.
