Boulerice must be too questionable....

HURRICANES SIGN JOEY TETARENKO TO ONE-YEAR DEAL
KEN PRESTON
RALEIGH, NC – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has signed free agent right wing Joey Tetarenko to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

"Joey adds some depth and toughness to our organization,” said Karmanos. “He is a hard-nosed character player who will challenge to make the team in September."

Tetarenko (6’2’’, 215 lbs.) split last season between the Florida Panthers’ and Ottawa Senators’ organizations. He played four games in the NHL with Florida and Ottawa, totaling nine penalty minutes. In 64 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) with San Antonio and Binghamton, Tetarenko tallied 20 points (6g, 14a) and 156 penalty minutes. A fourth-round draft choice (82nd overall) of the Panthers in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, Florida traded Tetarenko to Ottawa on March 4 in exchange for Simon Lajeunesse. Tetarenko, 25, became a Group 6 free agent following the season.

Tetarenko has totaled five points (4g, 1a) and 176 penalty minutes in 71 career NHL games. He played one season (1998-99) under current Hurricanes assistant coach Kevin McCarthy with New Haven of the AHL. A native of Prince Albert, Sask., Tetarenko captained Portland of the Western Hockey League (WHL) to the Memorial Cup title in 1998.

Anyone have warm fuzzies about this? We go from looking at a Klee, de Vries or Tverdovsky to this guy - who spent a good deal of last season in the minors. Maybe he would be a replacement for Boulerice (poor Jessie) but if thats all we're going for as far as defense I suddenly feel very cold.

Certainly this isn't thought of as a replacement for Tanabe and/or Markov!? Can't imagine this guy was expensive, so I think of it as a Boulerice backup deal - and I imagine the less expensive the deal, the easier it is to close.

right wing Joey Tetarenko
He's a right wing, not a d-man, so if that really is all we're doing for defense I'm as worried as you are. :D
Interesting sign for the 'Canes...Is the Bull really in that bad of a condition? Is this kangaroo any better of an enforcer than he is? I thought Boulerice was going to be 100% by camp, but maybe not. :eek2:

I forsee more UFA signings in the next few weeks....if this is the only one then we're screwed.

I'm hoping the same thing. I just don't have a lot of confidence in JR's judgement. Its just that this guy was mentioned earlier as being in the pack of the defensemen JR was considering. I"m hoping this little deal doesn't negate us getting a good D guy would can help mentor our new players and shore up a badly needed defensive group.

NHL.com classifies him as a right wing. Perhaps he can play both positions... :smoke: (http://www.nhl.com/lineups/player/8465035.html)

Duhhhhhh....I got confused by the way he was mentioned earlier with the defenseman JR was looking at. Boy do I feel dumb.See why I don;t post?

Don't feel so bad, guin.
Tetarenko, drafted 82nd overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers, is a physical player capable of playing right wing and defense

Well, I think he was cleared to practice 100% with no restrictions. I'm sure no one knows how he'll perform - no way to know if he's going to be 100% until at least camp - or his first pre-season scuffle.

This guy is nothing more than a 4rth line role player or an enforcer for Lowell, (which we have needed for some time). Maybe the boys in Lowell won't be quite so beat up with Joey watching their backs down there. He's a good pickup for us, and I'm sure he comes cheap.

This makes training camp even MORE interesting. I think there is a 99% chance Joey and The Bull drop the gloves at a practice and duke it out to see who will be the Canes enforcer next year. There's a lot at stake. Plus, this is a good way to test out the Bull before the season starts and see how he has progressed.

I think it's a good pickup for us and insurance if The Bull gets hurt. I sure don't think Craig Adams will be our enforcer next year if the Bull isn't around anymore.

cheers folks!

The AP article with quotes from JR:

Carolina Hurricanes sign tough guy
DAVID DROSCHAK
Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Carolina Hurricanes added some toughness to their organization Wednesday by signing free agent Joey Tetarenko to a one-year contract worth $450,000.

Tetarenko is insurance in case Jesse Boulerice doesn't fully recover from a concussion he suffered during a fight last season.

Boulerice's health was in question a few weeks ago, but Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said the team's enforcer is improving weekly.

"We have gotten reports that Jesse is doing very well and that's a different report than we had a month ago," Rutherford said. "His daily workouts are very hard and he recovering at 100 percent."

Carolina was left without much of a physical presence when Boulerice went down Feb. 11, missing the final 25 games.

The 6-2, 215-pound Tetarenko split time with Florida and Ottawa last season, playing in four NHL games. The winger was a fourth-round draft pick of the Panthers in 1996.

"I know this was not the signing of a defenseman we've all been waiting for but it's an important signing," Rutherford said. (nccanes note: Guin, I think he's talking to you ;))

"Joey is a guy that will be right on the bubble of making our team," Rutherford added. "If Paul (Maurice) decides he needs two tough guys he'll have Jesse and Joey and if he decides he needs one Joey will give us depth in the organization."

Unless Jesse is not 100%, then this is exactly what the Doctor ordered for Lowell :D  :D  . We did not have an enforcer for Lowell last year except for an ECHL'er that was called up.
Lowell was as weak as they came last year with players that were injured, many people think, due to not having an enforcer. You could ask C-Mac on that one.
The only thing I find interesting on this though is that Ron Smith has stated that he does not believe in the enforcer. I somehow do not see Ron Smith giving his blessings to Joey for playing in Lowell next year unless someone(Rutherford) changed his mind.

Hope Jesse will be ok! This guy sounds like a busy man...a winger that scores and crushes your head ...if you need it!! :D Good size!

Nothing new...but it does give us a pricetag. I'd say it's worth the money...

Well, looks like Joey is happy to be here! Now if only Markov would feel that way.

"I looked through depth charts to see what kind of players they would need and where I would most fit in," Tetarenko said. "Carolina is a perfect fit."

Rutherford said the Canes tried to trade for Tetarenko last winter when Lowell (AHL) was in desperate need of a tough guy, but were rebuffed.

The Canes know him from 1998-99, when Carolina and Florida shared a minor league team under current Carolina assistant coach Kevin McCarthy.

maybe when JR meets with Markov tomorrow (?) he will have some luck convincing him this is a great place to play and that he will have great teammates and that the money is enough. if he can't convince him, then I hope JR has a list of defensemen to try and sign.

The N&O said we were pursuing both Klee and Tverdovsky along with Wes...so we do have an out if we're willing to fork out the money.
