I just love starting a new game thread right after a win! :D

Well....let's see... we're up to .500 for January. We're sitting at a round 50 points, and we should move up to 6th in the Eastern Conference.

Until we meet Toronto again on the 30th, all the rest of the games this month are divisional ones. These are 2 points we need to grab with both hands!

Puck-drop at 7:00PM

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

nccanes

We need the points for sure and I really want a Canes win to add (even) more emotion to the Sat game vs. the Thrashers!

But 1 game at a time!

Good point, nccanes! I really want to be in the house for Atlanta Saturday night ... and see the guys BEAT them!!! :fire: But, first, FLORIDA!!!

Okay, 'Canes ... while the rest of the Triangle is looking the other way and watching ACC basketball over the next few weeks, let's get the magic going again!!!

LET'S GO, 'CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!

basketball = yuck  Personally-- I hope that our fan base grows, so that nobody feels the need to mention BB on our boards, especially in a game thread. Certainly, no one on this board is "looking the other way," and I would hope that nobody in the Triangle is "looking the other way." Can we keep any BB chatter in the "college sports" section, please? Thanx

I wish more people in this area like yourself echoed that same sentiment...

10k more! :D

Yipeee. We finally catch a team on the back end of a "back to back" situation while we are in Raleigh waiting for 'em.

I do not consider what I said to be "basketball chatter", canesluver. Simply an acknowledgement of the sentiments of many in this area, not this Board. If you go back and read, there are frequently "side comments" in game threads. I don't think I should be singled out for mine ...

Canesluver

I just think it's not a good reflection of our region. And I'm entitled to my opinion, but I'll drop it. As you were.

Excellent situation..... doesn't it make you want to drop by their hotel this afternoon during their nap time and pull the fire alarm!

(And speaking of fire alarms.... wasn't it odd last night during the 2nd Intermission that a fire alarm was going off at Toronto's arena, and nobody seemed to be concerned? )

It wasn't odd to anyone who works in a hospital. We have some acronym for the steps to take in case of a fire. We're always joking they should put an "I" in front of it....I for "Ignore alarm unless you are actually on fire."

The Panthers beat writer was on with XM this afternoon. Said the Panthers have been AWFUL on the 2nd night of back-to-backs. Said they're "1-10 or something". He was kinda funny because he said "hopefully they'll play well tonight, because we know they'll look horrible tomorrow". Please be right!

If the guys put together a solid effort all around and just do the stuff they're supposed to, we'll be fine.

I don't think anyone had a bad game last time, and in all honesty, here's to hoping Rosey picks up the goal he's working so hard to get.

Here's some stats I got out of the paper:

Panthers are 1-7 in the second games of a back-to-back
Panthers have not won at the RBC since Dec. 6, 2002

And just some other notes for tonight:
Gary Roberts is out with a hip flexor injury
Jokinen notched a hat trick last night against Pitt. Hopefully he'll be held scoreless tonight.
Let's hope Jokinen doesn't break anymore Canes foots tonight.

SoCalcaniac
01-11-2007, 08:21 AM
Forslund was just on with the 620 guys- he implied that the Wesley injury is probably worse than what is being talked about, especially since he's not even practicing.

Poor Forslund sounds like he's about to jump off a bridge since FSNS isn't carrying games this week and he doesn't have much to do. He sounds inconsolable.

Yeah, the Finnish Punk Rocker got his 'trick last night. Let's keep him off the score board. I used to find Jokinen amusing- now he just scares me.

Another thing Forslund said this morning which I heartily agree with; Tonight we get FLA who is coming in off a game last night so we're waiting for them; Saturday night ATL will have played NJ the night before; so during our stretch of teams waiting for us while we played whoever, the gripe was just that; so now we are well rested and have to 'do something' about that and 'take advantage'. Yep.

3 to nothing after 2. Nothing is about what the Canes have done so far. No checking, confusion in the defensive end. Cam's being hung out to dry again by his teammates. This team could add about 2 pages to the description of "frustration" in Webster's dictionary.

I had such plans.

But I'm obviously dead, and this is heaven. Ah well, might as well enjoy it.

3 points for Brindy; 2 points for LaRose, Walker, Hutchinson, Cole, and Belanger. What in the heck happened in that locker room.

I need to revise my slogan:

"Play like you're down 3-0 at home to start the 3rd and they yanked your goalie at intermission."

Low points: Staal and Williams 0 points, -2 apiece.

High points: Brindy 19-2 on faceoffs. Belanger a +3. Seidenberg led all skaters with 30 shifts. Cole 9 hits. Wow.

Holy... crap.

THAT was insanity.

I was watching up here in Virginia from a Buffalo Wild Wings.. had Carolina / Florida on one big screen, and Buffalo / Toronto on the other. Great to see Jeff O'Neil grab 2 in the Leafs victory over the Sabres tonight. That being said...

WAY TO GO CAROLINA HURRICANES! WOOOO WOO WOOOOOO!

After skating around lost during the first two periods, it's like something clicked with about 2:30 left to go in the 2nd. People started skating, and they came out hungry in the third. SO good to see Rosey get that goal he was so overdue, and what an opportune time for it to happen! Flood gates opened up and next thing you know, we've got pucks going in left and right. Seidenberg having a few good hard hits, playing well defensively, and lookin good. (I'm going to have to say that after 2 games, this looks like it might have been a good trade) C.Ads grabbin that nasty backhander... Stillman doing nothing... and Brindy going 19-2 in the circle. This third period reminded me of last years game against Philly when we were down 5-3 after 2 and won it 8-6. I mean good LORD talk about your comebacks. Dumbfounded is the only way for me to describe this game. I hope Atlanta is ready for the momentum / confidence that just happened in this game.... ok not really.

And NCCanes, I hope you were listening to the Aftermath, I kept it short for ya. ;) (No bitterness at all, seriously... all in good fun)

... MAN what a third period. :)

WHOA. Just got back from the game - that was amazzzinnng. I think I agree with the guy who sat next to me - you want to say what a game, but really what a period.

And how 'bout Chad? He finally got his goal in there and an assist as well. You know it's a good night when Rosie gets the first star! :D

I gotta say that the crowd was a bit lame. Throughout the first two periods it was eerily quiet - sure, their play wasn't helping - but, there were times where people were whispering. That's just weird. There was one guy - in 332 I believe - who was pretty crazy. He kept trying to get the wave going by yelling at the sections around him at the top of his lungs - then he started yelling at the lower level. When it didn't work, he went section by section in the 300s to spread the word that the wave was coming. It was one of the more entertaining things during the first 40.

Whew, now I'm off to bed - that game wore me out. GO CANES!!!

okay seriously......WHOEVER DVRed this game....i will give an arm for a copy...

I don't need your arm- just resend me your addy....

Just got back. I hope the boys have some sort of contrition and good to see Ray, EC, Babs and well all of them went up to Cam to console him. He didn't put them in that mess that they played for 40 minutes, and we all know Peter pulled him to 'get their attention'. Attention indeed. It took me til the 4th goal to get over how pissed off I was at that bunch. UNACCEPTABLE. and they knew it. Shame on all of them for what they did to Cam. Great job to Crackers for just holding it down. And yes, Excellent 20 minutes played there. God bless Chad LaRose, who always comes to play and works so daggone hard, that he deserved that crazy goal.

I've never see Scott Walker so emotional, great for him to get that goal too as he has been working his butt off, and I do believe Eric Belanger now officially feels like a Cane. He sure did play like one, and he really had things going. Oh, and Mr Socal who listens to Chuck in the arena swear that EC was offsides for that beauty he scored  and then Chuck says "well they got the one back that Mcgeough waved off- it's the hockey gods" LMAO. Leave to Chuck to keep it real. Seidenberg looks real good out there. I thought he kept it simple and worked hard.

Crowd had nothing to cheer for for 40 minutes- but it did get nutty in there after we tied it. I'm sure Peter is saying yes, good to battle back, but I know he is disappointed that we came out again like we were the ones who played last night. I'll say this- yep, great win, but if they expect to do that stuff with ATL on saturday night, then they might as well give them the two points before they even start.

Just got back from the game and haven't read any posts yet, so if i repeat, my apologies.

First 40 mins = crap. Thank God for Cam or Florida would have been leading going into the 2nd. Once again his teammates were sleeping for 40 minutes and made Cam face a firing squad. For Florida to get 31 SOG in 40 mins. = riduculous.

But, something was said in the locker room and the boys came out firing. The small crowd was finally into it and what an amazing game. 5 goals in 9:30 minutes. Set a record scoring 6 goals in 1 period. 6 different scorers, ROSIE being one of them.

This should be a great motivater for Saturday night.

3) Rod Brind'Amour
2) Eric Belanger
1) Chad LaRose (so deserves this)

So I miss most of the 3rd 'cause Hubby got a Wii and had to show me every last thing it does. He finally let me go. Now we're FIVE to THREE!!!! OMG!.

I turned it off to play PS3 after 2. Better yet, my wife went to a conference so I didn't use my tickets. Excuse me while I go hang myself for being a crappy fan.

Just got back too. My new Cole jersey is 2-0! :D Well after two periods of crap, a ton of people left. My mom wanted to leave early because my daughter competes in her first school-wide spelling bee tomorrow. I said "Only if we are losing 4-0". My daughter then said "Mom, the Canes are going to win this game 6-3" (I swear, that's what she said :eek2:). Needless to say, I'm glad she was almost on the money!

That third period was great. The few people left certainly tried their hardest to make some noise. I'm so glad for Chad especially, but Belanger also had a great night.

Oh BTW, puck_it, you were so right about Seidenberg's skates--the noise is an abomination. I could tell exactly where on the ice he was based on that awful sound!

And also, McGeough STILL SUCKS!

I was at the game; you don't need to be depressed by the 1st two periods....just get someone to send you the 3rd....it was unbelieveable. We came out with fire and passion. After the 2nd goal everybody in the RBC knew it was just a matter of time....

Man. It's too bad, really.

Wow.

Williams looked a bit like he was hurt or burnt....Staal played pretty well, but just couldn't get the puck to stay on his stick....the line of Belanger, Walker, and Ladd was AWESOME!!!...Ladd rolled up into a line w/J Willy and Staal a few times tonight as well and he played exceptionally well. I'd like to see Belanger, Ladd, and Letowski (who was just a monster on a couple of penalty kills) get more minutes....whenever those guys and Scotty Walker are on the ice, the pace seems to double....

The 3rd period should make them very ashamed of the 2nd period. I thought the 1st was a draw.

Whatever PLav said at the 2nd intermission should be bottled and sold to bosses everywhere.....just not MY boss;)

Must have been nice for Grahame to see a team play well in front of him. Kind of a new experience when he's in goal.

Seidenberg is 2-0 in this building. Welcome Ham:D

On to the Thrashers and gaining ground on them. Screw Buffalo and their results. We've got the little brown birds to catch.

I think I'm just going to wipe the first two periods out of mind. Yeah.... that's the ticket! Wish I could have been a fly on the wall to see the tongue bath Coach surely gave the guys.... whatever was said sure did work.

It's just so awesome that Rosey finally got his due.

I bring binocs with me, and I like to check out the benches during breaks in play. Panthers were gassed after our first 3-goal burst-- just gassed--sitting there gasping for breath. He's an unsung hero, but you just have to give credit to Pete Friesen for keeping this team so well-conditioned. THAT is the key for us to gain the advantage on these teams coming in on the back-side of a back-to-back.

That was the most awesome game I've seen in that building since June 19. Just unbelievable!!

And hey! I was on TV tonight!!

Everyone who left after the second period because you decided this was a lost cause....serves you freakin' right! Ha! Didn't you learn last season never to count these guys out?!?

The Seidenberg/Babcuk pairing was making me nervous in Toronto, and they were making me nervous tonight. Probably mostly cause they were on the ice for two of Florida's goals. I thought once he broke that pairing up the D looked way better.

All night one or the other of us were calling "Seidenberg is on the ice" cause we could hear those skates. Ugh. They are bad.

Scott Walker totally rocks. And one day, Chad LaRose WILL manage a hat trick and I sure as hell hope I'm there to throw a hat for it.

So, McGeough thinks the play is dead and blows the whistle when Auld makes a save to disallow a goal in the 1st (?? it's a blur) period, but on that delayed penalty in the third an Auld save didn't count as possession?!? WTF? Even the Florida announcers commented on that!! (just watching the third here) He's a moron. Other than that he called an OK game, I guess.

Cam Ward has nothing to be ashamed of. The guys better buy his dinner, lol. Crackers looked good coming in cold, too.

Way to fight back, boys. THAT was Carolina Hurricanes Hockey!! Well, the third, anyway.

And YAY! Buffalo lost again!! :nanner:

I'm probably going to gush all night long....Belanger. My god, he had a helluva third. Really, he didn't have a bad game overall, but he was doing SO much in the third. He would NOT let that puck out of the zone.

The quotes from the guys all seem to show that they realize everyone was standing around waiting for some other guy to do everything for the first 40. I remember Mr SHC about popping a vein at some point when, in the defensive zone, the puck was just hanging out there around the faceoff circle and 4 of our guys just stood there and looked at it, waiting for someone else to skate in and grab it. If they know they're doing that maybe they can stop now!!

Unfortunately, I didn't schedule the recording but simply had it on Center Ice watching the game where I could rewind/live as much as I wanted... until I changed the channel. At that point, the TWC DVR clears the buffer and starts recording (in the event of rewind) on the new channel.

But even if I did schedule the recording, does anyone know how I would get it off the TWC DVR to DVD? That would be sweet!

PS The NHL should force all coverage in high def. You should see how great the game looks in HD vs. FSN standard def.

Another reason I turned the game off after 2 was the announcers. They were terrible. The Toronto announcers the other night were at least informed and amusing. I know Potvin is a HOF'er and all but he does grate on me when watching FSNFL broadcasts, and Dave Strader is a bigger goob than Harry Neale or Glenn Healey could ever be. I'll be interested to hear the comments myself as I've not watched the TiVo, but I hear what you're sayin'.

You know, I'm now having a hard time with distinguishing Cole's dives. There are times when I'm like ok, keep going, and then he splats- and then there are other times when I see him go and say get your butt up and quit diving-you don't have to do that. And Justin is a 'known diver'?? Um, I could hear those T-Blades in my seats in 304, I have a heightened sensitivity to noises and I do believe I heard those things when he came out for warmups- over the loud music! OMG puck_it, you warned me about the German players and their love for them, but holy cow. That sound is gnarly. Seriously.

HURRICANES 6, PANTHERS 4
Jokinen fumes in aftermath of late collapse
Carolina scored six third-period goals, leaving Olli Jokinen and the Panthers at a loss: `I think we were just afraid to win and quit playing.'
BY KEVIN BAXTER
kbaxter@MiamiHerald.com

RALEIGH, N.C. - For much of the past month, the Panthers have been as good as any team in hockey. But for much of the third period Thursday, they might have been as bad as any team in history.

The result was a stunning 6-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes that left the Panthers shaken -- and in one case, almost physically ill.

''It's like something rotten in our stomachs,'' defenseman Mike Van Ryn said. ``It's going to be a rough video to watch.''

Added center Olli Jokinen: ``The third period was embarrassing.''

How embarrassing? Consider:

• Carolina tied a franchise record by scoring six times in the period, getting five goals on their first eight shots.

• It was the first time the Hurricanes had rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a regular-season game in more than eight years. And they needed just 8:22 to get their first five goals, the second-quickest five-goal outburst in franchise history.

• The loss left Florida (16-21-9) winless in Carolina since December 2002 and winless in the Southeast Division since the fifth game of the season, dropping it another two points deeper into the division basement.

All of which left a disappointed Jokinen questioning his teammates' resolve.

''I think we were just afraid to win and quit playing,'' the Panthers' captain said. ``It wasn't the first time it happened this year. A lot of the games when we have a lead, we start doing stupid mistakes and we quit playing.''

Later, he added: ``A lot of our guys were nervous to go on the ice. Basically you pretty much know what's going to happen. You have to have pride in what you [do]. Either you want to be on the ice or sit on the bench.''

For much of the final period, it didn't appear to matter where Jokinen and his teammates stood, with Carolina bouncing pucks off, over and around the startled Panthers to erase a 3-0 Florida lead built on second-period goals by Juraj Kolnik, Jokinen and Stephen Weiss.

Less than two minutes into the period, Chad LaRose got the comeback started on something of a fluke goal, appearing to shoot the puck off Panthers defenseman Steve Montador and over the shoulder of goalie Alex Auld.

Erik Cole caught the Panthers in a line change to score on a breakaway 86 seconds later before Scott Walker tied the score with a wraparound goal after Florida turned the puck over in its own end.

''They got one lucky one there right at the start of the third and it just seemed like everything tightened up and the wheels fell off,'' Van Ryn said.

And when Cory Stillman followed with a power-play goal 93 seconds after Walker's score, the Hurricanes were in front to stay. Craig Adams added what proved to be the game-winner with a back-hander off a rebound a minute and a half after that.

''It was just goal after goal. They created scoring chances shift after shift,'' Jokinen said. ``The game was right there to be taken. And we [gave] away the points.''

Which isn't something the Panthers have been doing lately. Florida went into Thursday's game having gone 6-2-3 in its past 11 games, earning 15 of a possible 22 points to rekindle its fledgling playoff hopes.

But that couldn't sustain that momentum for a full hour Thursday.

''We were very good for 50 minutes, and 10 minutes cost us the hockey game,'' Panthers coach Jacques Martin said. ``Some of it is youth, but [it's also] mistakes. We've got to be better. You've got to work for 60 minutes.''

It amuses me to read things like that (what I bolded) because those of us who have watched this team all season have known that the Canes have been very vulnerable/fragile themselves. I'm glad that last year still put a bit of fear and nerves into them tho.

E- I saw that quote too, and totally agree- we've been that fragIle ourselves but somehow got those guys rattled enough that they realized they were "playing the Champs and went into panic mode/freaked out" as I snidely said to hub on the way home.

I read alot of the South Florida papers about this game last night and the quotes from the players and coaches- and the tone of the articles-basically "what the hell" type stuff- and now that I've let go some of my own anger at the Canes for waiting til the 3rd to get it going, I'm kinda chuckling at what I witnessed live and in person. I'll try and recap the best I can:

Pretty much started as saying that in the Florida locker room during the 2nd intermission, they must not have been reminded that they are playing the SC champs. Said something along the lines of he couldn't believe that the flukey goal by Chad LaRose opened the floodgates.

He also mentioned that how when he saw Grahame come out in the 3rd that he immediatley thought of the playoffs how Lavi would change his goalies to wake his team up and how it always worked and it worked once again.

He also gave Cam credit and said that he didn't think any of the 3 goals were Cam's fault and he said he thought Cam played a very solid game.

I pulled into the parking lot right when he was coming on and just had to sit there and listen.

Poor Denis P. I can hear his "drained" voice in my head right now, bemoaning the woes of the Panthers  . I'll look forward to hearing the replay later on today....!

I'm always sitting in the parking lot listening to XM too- I often look around and wonder wherever I'm at, if other people are doing it too. This satellite thing has us all glued to our cars!

Um, I could hear those T-Blades in my seats in 304, I have a heightened sensitivity to noises and I do believe I heard those things when he came out for warmups- over the loud music! OMG puck_it, you warned me about the German players and their love for them, but holy cow. That sound is gnarly. Seriously.

Imagine when we play San Jose... Both ERhoff and Seidenberg will be out there at teh same time with them  Its not the first time they've been here, Hecht wears them.. If you know what to listen for, you can point them out over anything... if you arent aware they can sometimes blend in...

The crackling and the WHOOOMF sound when they stop are immistakeable though.

Uh, noooo! I'm trying not to! I told Mr. Socal he can watch his boy Erhoff and I'll take his earbuds so I can listen to Chuck when they come to town  Seriously kid, you weren't lying. My ears started to screech....

I'm surprised I never noticed Hecht's though- maybe because I was so engrossed in BUF hatred. lol

you were distracted by the police officers arresting people ;)

and you know, you jsut write it off as a weird noise unless you know wht to look for. I've heard hecht's before, not as loud as some guys though...

Williams looked a bit like he was hurt or burnt....
Yup, Williams appeared to be skating uphill all night long. It was obvious enough to be the buzz throughout our Section during the second intermission, despite the (to that point) lackluster effort by the team as a whole.

We all know that Justin is capable of playing much better than he showed last night (Minus 2). Hopefully, he was just ill. If he has an (unreported) injury that impairs him to that extent, then perhaps he ought to rehab on IR.

BTW - the most entertaining thing in the first 2 periods was the Kiss Cam. I can't believe I still watch - and laugh - at that thing. People are pretty good sports.

Do you think most people realized that pre-taped kiss gag was actually pre-taped?

BTW, a few games ago, they showed the pre-taped chicken dancing and someone behind me was telling their seatmate what section he thought they were in "I think they are over in the other corner".

I have finally recovered enough to say this. The Tanabe game worn jersey is undeafeated. I was worried for it last night.

And the high five from G33 was the highlight of the night in addition to the nanner I knew SHC was giving to the folks that left after the second. (I looked outside during intermission 2 and actually saw a few cars lined up waiting to exit. Good for them to miss one of the greatest hurricanes periods in regular season history.

I hate all the video, lol.

Potvin cracks me up. I HATE to hear him on the broadcast...he's a total homer and he always pisses me off. But hearing him on XM just makes me laugh because he loves our team. LOVES. He cannot stop gushing about last season and the playoffs. It just tickles the crap out of me.

So I posted this in a different thread (and it was OT for it anyway) but seriously, did the pregame video not bother anyone else. I literally couldn't look at the JT. So I kinda stared ahead - and then the schitzo ribbon board started bothering me. I literally looked at my feet until it was over.

I can't stand it when people leave the game early (Kat and I had a spirited debate over this last night and I know there are differing opinions on this subject, so let's leave it at that), regardless of the score. It's like those 1500+ people who left before the end of game 2 of the NJ series only to hear the bomb of cheering go off on the RBC after Staal tied it back up or the countless other games I can think of where I saw people leaving early because we were loosing and we ended up not only coming back but winning. I wiggle my fingers at you. :p

Those of you, like me, who can't stand the people leaving early...have you seen that "man law" commercial about that? Jim Kelly's in it and they decree no leaving the game early as a new man law. I *immediately* thought of the fine folks here who have commiserated with me over this before.

I honestly didn't notice it. So, I guess my answer would be, no, it didn't bother me.

And, I'm also mystified by all of you commenting on the noise that Seidenberg's skates makes. Totally didn't notice that, either.

I didn't notice the skate noise either and I'm really noise sensitive. Must be low frequency. I can deal with the roar of crowd noise, but humming or high pitched voices make me crazy(er)!

I have no idea what goes on with the JT if it's not game related, but even I love the dance man. Don't care if it's live or memorex. Makes me laugh.

I was totally trying to remember which Japanese cartoon sent all those kids to the ER having siezures. I think it was a Pokemon episode. But I'm not good with movies/videos that flash pictures too quickly. When I saw the movie JFK back in 1992 I had to leave because all of Kevin Costner's flashbacks to go along with his re-creations of the shooting made me feel like I was gonna hurl.

didn't some woman claim Mary Hart's voice made her seize?

do we need to get out more or what:lol:

I can't look at that nasty stobe thing they do, or used to do, pregame. I just don't watch. It nearly made me have to go. Closing my eyes was not sufficient. I tried that!!

QUOTE]

It was that Wang Chung video "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" with all the quick cuts and stop-motion. It was banned in Britain, I think, because it caused seizures.

How's that for a useless factoid???

"In 1991, the New England Journal of Medicine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England_Journal_of_Medicine) reported that Hart's voice, perhaps best described as perky, had triggered seizures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seizures) in an epileptic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epilepsy) woman. [1] (http://tafkac.org/faq2k/television_307.html) This was later referenced in an episode of the NBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC) sitcom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitcom) Seinfeld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seinfeld), where Kramer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmo_Kramer) (Michael Richards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Richards)) suffers from convulsions whenever he hears Hart's voice."

Wikipedia to the rescue yet again. :D
