Hey Mods, I had an idea after seeing Caniac's "It's My Birthday!" thread. Is it possible for there to be an automatic thread started for lgc.com members' birthdays? Everyone posts their birthdays in their Member Profile, and then on their birthday, a thread is started so that other members can post their well wishes! Just an idea. What do the rest of y'all think?

CALAIS, France (AFP) - A 34-year-old Austrian mechanic became the first person ever to fly across the English Channel without the benefit of an aircraft, gliding from England to France wearing only a specially-designed suit.

"I felt like a bird," said skydiver Felix Baumgartner, after jumping from a plane high over the English port of Dover and then gliding on a wing attached to his body to a point above the French coast, where he activated a parachute.

"At this altitude it's perfect because you see the sunrise, you're totally alone," he said after a flight which was held in the early morning to avoid air traffic control problems.

"I covered the whole distance with just a little wing, it was great," he enthused Thursday.

To launch him on his high-speed glide, Baumgartner was taken up from the French port of Calais in a Skyvan aircraft, from which he jumped from high above Dover.

He started his unusual journey from a point some 9,000 metres (30,000 feet) over the English port of Dover at 6:09 am (0409 GMT), and ended it 1,000 metres above Cape Blanc-Nez, near Calais, where landed at 6:23 am.

Baumgartner, who reached a speed of some 200 kilometres (120 miles) an hour during his glide, was wearing an aerodynamic suit fitted with a 1.80 metre (six-foot) long carbon-fibre wing for the 35 kilometre (20 mile) glide.

He also had special breathing apparatus for the high-altitude start of the flight, and was protected from the extreme cold at such heights by his special suit.

Air traffic controllers had granted him a 30-minute window -- from 5:45 to 6:15 am -- to make his jump, scheduling the event for early morning to avoid problems with conventional air traffic.

"Louis Bleriot did it with a plane, now I did it with a little wing," he said, referring to the French aviator who in July 1909 became the first person to fly across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air machine.

Baumgartner's mission was named Icarus 2 after the mythical figure who came to grief after flying too near the sun, which melted the wax holding together his wings.

The Austrian has a long track record of daredevil jumps. He has leapt from the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro, one of the two Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur -- the tallest buildings in the world -- and the top of a mountain in Baffin Island, in Canada.

batesb13fan, he isn't walking yet but getting close. He also won't be there on opening night as my wife and I decided that his pending mobility might be a problem taking him to 44 games this year. We decided to sell 25 of our second season ticket to another person. He obviously chose opening night as one of his games.

He will be there for all 3 preseason games plus 16 regular season games this year.

meh... it ain't a big deal. honestly, 25 sat worse with me than 30 has so far. not sure why.

I'll always be a kid.... and for the past 10 years I've had the joints and back of an old man (thank you youth athletics!!!).... so I'm pretty inbetween age factors. lol.

I'll always be a kid at heart... until I reach that ultimate age when I can be a true grumpy ole *******... which I will cherish until my dying days. :D

can't complain though... great wife, great house (albeit a little small), solid jobs that do more than pay the bills....
life is A-OK by me.

Thank you Rio! I have to admit that I'm surprised at how many celebrities, past and present, share my birthday. Besides the following, I also share a birthday with the wife of my friend who has come with me to all the Canes games I've attended this season (Including Tuesday night's :spin:)...

I believe as a halloween baby, the 20th is a sacrificial cow. have fun

Y'know...my folks and I had a big, BIG bash planned for tonight that actually involved having a sacrificial cow. EVERYBODY was invited, there was going to be the usual cake (Red Velvet Pumpkin) and ice cream (Your pick of Rocky Road or Pistachio) plus a buffet full of surprises (Chicken Surprise, Hamburger Surprise, Tuna Surprise, Veal Surprise, Venison Surprise, etc.), and treats and games for the kids. Not to mention a wonderful band who can plays hits like this (http://www.miserablemelodies.com/ram/howlovelycooksthemeat.ram) and this (http://www.miserablemelodies.com/ram/lsc-relaxation.ram). Unfortunately, we found out that all of the Canes couldn't come. And to make matters worst, the ones in charge of the neighborhood/subdivision said we couldn't have a ferris wheel, log flume, olympic sized ice rink, olympic sized swimming pool (heated!), and drive-in theatre size movie projection screen in our backyard (Along with the surround sound system included). But, the absolute worst thing of them all is that nobody is willing to donate a sacrificial cow for what would have been the perfect birthday party. We have frantically called everywhere asking for what we wholeheartedly desired, and we only get one response.

"Don't have a cow, man."

With that said, my family and I's festivities have been restricted to a mere dinner at Olive Garden and a visit to the mall. Oh, what could have been... (sighs)
