I knew that once Hatcher left the Stars, it was only a matter of time before Modano was named Captain. He should make a good one I think. :)

Modano replaces Hatcher as captain

DALLAS (AP) -- With Derian Hatcher taking his hard-hitting style to Detroit, the Dallas Stars named Mike Modano their new captain on Thursday.

Modano is the franchise leader in every meaningful statistical category and an obvious replacement. A two-way force, he's already viewed by many as the face of the team. Now he'll have the C on his sweater, too. He's been an alternate captain for years.

Hatcher was the captain for nine of his 12 seasons with the Stars, having received the honor in February 1995 after Neal Broten was traded.

When Dallas won the Stanley Cup in 1999, Hatcher became the first American-born captain to hoist the trophy. His tenure as captain was by far the longest in franchise history.

While the Stars were interested in re-signing Hatcher, they weren't willing to give him a five-year deal. That's what he got from the Red Wings, the team Hatcher watched while growing up in a Detroit suburb.

Dallas announced last week that it wouldn't offer Hatcher a new contract during its exclusive negotiating period. He hit the free agent market Tuesday and got the deal he wanted pretty quickly.

His departure continues the reshaping -- and budget-cutting -- of a team that last season didn't live up to its payroll, which was among the league's highest.

While the Stars had the most points in the Western Conference, they were eliminated by Anaheim in the second round of the playoffs. Since then, general manager Doug Armstrong has sought to move high-priced players Pierre Turgeon and even Bill Guerin, last summer's top free agent signee.

Hatcher's departure makes Modano and Richard Matvichuk the only remaining players who moved with the franchise from Minnesota to Dallas in 1993.

He'll make a great captain so long as he can keep his whining at bay!

Modano has been a favorite of mine since day one. When I first started
watching hockey 1999, he was actually Captain. Little did I know when I
bought his *CAPTAIN* jersey, that is was temporary. I never wore his
jersey with the big *C* on it because I didn't want someone saying....
*He's NOT the Captain*.....................well now I can wear it. :D

and I agree about the whining. It was so not like him and I was really
turned off by it.

This is actually last weeks news, but just realized it hadn't been posted.

Stars extend Modano by a year
DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Stars center Mike Modano signed a one-year contract extension Wednesday that prevents him from becoming a free agent until the summer of 2005. Modano, the team's career leader in nearly every significant category, will earn $9 million this season. He was named the Stars' captain this summer after Derian Hatcher signed with Detroit.

The NHL's labor situation is uncertain after this season. The deal with Modano keeps him from being in limbo during a possible lockout next season and could make it easier for a long-term deal to be worked out later.

"This gives us mutual protection that we will be together no matter what happens," owner Tom Hicks said. "It certainly will be our intention to sign Mike (to another extension) under the new rules."

General manager Doug Armstrong called Modano about the stopgap extension because of the uncertainly of the labor situation.

"It took one phone call to do this," said Modano, who last season had 28 goals and 57 assists while becoming the fifth American-born player to reach 1,000 career points.

Modano has the most goals, assists, points, game-winning goals, short-handed goals and games played in franchise history.

The first overall pick in the 1988 NHL draft, Modano is one of two remaining players from the team's days as the Minnesota North Stars. He was on the Stanley Cup finals teams in 1991, 1999 and 2000 and played a major role in winning the '99 championship.

"I believe Mike Modano and the Stars are synonymous," Hicks said. "This is clearly one of the best investments this team has ever made."

The extension is reportedly worth $9.5 million, but the Stars didn't release contract terms. Armstrong did confirm there is a no-trade clause.

Hicks, Armstrong and Modano said the extension was the first step in ensuring that the five-time All-Star spends his entire career in Dallas. It also allows Modano to go through next season without questions about his future.

"I'm very lucky and fortunate to be able to stay here," Modano said. "I'm more content as a player and a person on and off the ice. Just not having that in the back of my mind, I will be a little more at ease, and will be able to just go out and play and not force the issue."

Sure it would have been intriguing to be a free agent, but Modano knows he's happy in Dallas.

"Yeah, you'd like to see what's available and what's out there. But there are no guarantees," he said. "I like what I have here. I am comfortable here, and know our commitment and what we have here."

Armstrong said the Stars are continuing contract negotiations with All-Star goalie Marty Turco, who became a free agent after setting a modern NHL record with his 1.72 goals against average his first season as the starter. His GAA in the playoffs was 1.88 with a .919 save percentage.

"Hopefully we are closing the differences," Armstrong said. "He had a great season and we're going to reward him handsomely for that."

The Stars report to training camp Sept. 12 in Vail, Colo.

Yeah Heroin Mike will make a good captain. He'll have to carry the stars alittle more this year I think, but they got some good young guys that might break out at anytime...

Mainly Nikko Kappanen....
