From Mike Sundheim's blog:

Don't forget to tune in a little early tomorrow night for the very first edition of Hurricanes Live, the new pre-game show on FSN South. The show starts at 6:30, and will also include the debut of a fresh new look for everyone's favorite play-by-play announcer.

New hairdo for Forslund? Should be interesting!

GO 'CANES!!

So was puck_it.....

the debut of a fresh new look for everyone's favorite play-by-play announcer.
Based on the link to the St Baldrick's thing, that isn't until March 3. That "debut" is tomorrow night.

Maybe Chuck is growing hair to have something to shave?

I think Forslund is going to start wearing that salmon jacket of Tripp's.

Another BIG game, another opportunity for a BIG win for the Canes. The PP must keep on trucking. 26 games to go, 6 points back of Atlanta, 4 games head-to-head. Atlanta is heading off for the nasty of nasties road trip (at Colorado, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Ottawa) before yet another road game here in Raleigh. Here's hoping Colorado buries them in precisely the way that Kruschev did not bury us, and we take care of freaking business against a Boston team that needs to get used to the idea of watching their post-season hopes slip out of reach, and we get that much closer to seeing that Tuesday Feb. 20th game as a battle for the division lead.

Just heard Forslund on with the 620 guys- Boy you could hear the disappointment in the Babs situation, and a little disgust with the agent Jay Grossman- "this is Grossman's MO, he's difficult to deal with". Oy.

They talked about the mood among the team, Cam having a "jump" in his step, and that the return of Frankie really gave the team a lift. Said he spoke with Frank, and that Frankie said he felt good, even after the Downey hit, but he said he didn't like 'how he saw the ice' Forslund said "he fooled all of us" cause he felt Frankie was very good.

They talked about the pre-game show- also talked about Cam's new mask and that Cam could be a "walking ad for the Chamber of Commerce" - apparently Crackers has a new helmet too- "I have kids I can't talk about it, but I like looking at it" :eek2: and he said something about doing a feature of it on the pregame show tonight so everyone can get a look.

It's game day ya'll. So 620 played BEEP BEEP. ;)

IMHO this will be a telling game!

* Will the 'Canes continue with another 60-minute effort?
* Will losing Stillman be a crutch if they decide NOT to put in a 60-minute effort.
* Will the 'Canes issue a little payback for the Bruins beating them in their barn?
* Did Babchuk leave a mess in the locker room after his temper tantrum?
* Can CAM bring two "A" games in a row?
* Will Staal play with the fire he did in Montreal?
* Can Kaberle continue his goal scoring streak?
* Can we break the Bruins two game winning streak?

Silly questions if it were last year..... but

We should be able to win this game easily considering that not only are we playing the Bruins (no disrepect to the Bruins just the facts) but we are playing an injury depleted Bruins on their forward lines.

This SHOULD be a momentum building game for the 'Canes BUT, if lost, it could be devastating to a fragile 'Canes team! I am predicting a WIN

Canes 3-1

Will Chara flop around on the ice after a phantom high stick?
I'm just curious, but did the phantom high stick leave blood on his forehead too? Everyone around me was yelling at Chara, but I saw the blood and my wife saw the blood. He wiped it off with a towel on the bench too. Did he get that from something else? That was kind of confusing because I wasn't watching them when the alleged altercation happened.

puck_it
02-08-2007, 02:02 PM
i believe they meant to reference the phantom trip, wasnt that chara involved? I wasnt at teh game, trying to remember verbal accounts.

Scottie2hottie
02-08-2007, 02:14 PM
from what i saw...he ran into cole and then fell on the ice...and then there was the phantom high stick....i'm thinking he got popped when he was on the ice with cole but they didn't see the blood until he stood up:huh:

queenmerry
02-08-2007, 02:24 PM
I saw the cut over the bridge of his nose and it looked similar to the injuries you often see in some high stick incidents, but I'll be the first to admit that where I sit I have some trouble seeing the area of the ice where it happened. When the play goes beyond center ice everyone beside me glues their faces and noses to the glass like it improves the view. I have to rely on the Jumbotron which isn't always great. From where I was sitting it was hard to tell what the origination was, but the ugly man definitely had a cut and bruising on the bridge of that massive nose that wasn't there before that play.

When I saw the cut and bruising I cringed because it was in that special spot right between your eyes that can make your eyes water from just getting a hard tap! :)

Him and Cole banged, but it was Stillman I believe who was the 3rd man along the boards there, and it was his stick that caught Chara.. The stripes actually gave the penalty to the wrong guy.... right call but wrong guy. The B's broadcast caught this on one of their replays.

SouthernHockeyChick
02-08-2007, 03:12 PM
The reason most of the crowd was pissed about the call is that no ref had an arm up. No penalty was going to be called until he laid there on the ice and dressed it up well enough. No arm ever went up.....but somehow one of our guys ended up in the box.

Kinda stupid to boo Chara over it. Turned out to be a really smart play on his part. The refs deserved the booing.

What do you say about the Wizard? he rocks, he rolls, he's invaluable.

There are so many things to like about that period. keep. foot. on. gas.

Why are they re-running the stuff they showed in the pre-show? I hope that's not how it's gonna be all the time. keep the original material flowing!

Nice crowd shots of all the Caniacs up in Beantown. And way to represent and throw the hat (s?I thought I saw two) on the ice for the Wizard.

Unbreakable: these are the NHL records that should stand for all eternity

MOST GOALS IN A GAME: JOE MALONE, 7

"The Phantom" is more myth now than man--a specter from the early days when hockey was still played on outdoor rinks in frigid temperatures. His seven goals powered the hometown Quebec Bulldogs to a 10-6 victory over Toronto on January 31, 1920, establishing a record that has stood for over 80 years. What's overlooked is that in the final game of the season, he almost tied his record, notching six goals against the original Ottawa Senators. Six other players have recorded double hat tricks, but the last one to do it was Darryl Sittler in 1976.

FASTEST THREE GOALS IN A SINGLE GAME: BILL MOSIENKO, 21 SECONDS

Mosienko's third period hat trick on March 23, 1952--the final game of the season--propelled the Blackhawks to a 7-6 victory over the Rangers. The 30-year-old right winger shattered the old record by 43 seconds. In fact, no team, much less an individual, had notched a hat trick that quickly. New York goalie Lorne Anderson, who was on the wrong side of destiny that night, never played in the NHL again.

Give it up to Scottie for kicking that guys arse. Lit a fire under his team arse.

Awesome 2nd period. Just awesome. 20 more minutes. Keep this pressure going and don't sit back on your lead, push, push, push.

Can't be good for Cole if he's still being looked at per Coach Daniels.

Hopefully he didn't end up breaking his hand. I know that's a reason Lavi doesn't like his guys to fight in case they get injured.

I liked the fight, but hopefully his hand is just a bit bruised and with us up by 3 keep him out. We can't afford to have Stiller, Colesy and Scottie out.

SHC- Yeah, I was sick when I saw that Alberts replay. I knew Scotty wasn't just going crazy on someone for a jump start. Alberts did this before against the Sens- (think it was Redden he clipped) I don't like it at all. I'm sure that tape is going straight to the league office.

So what the heck did Savard do to get the book thrown at him?

From Luke's blog:

The Hurricanes have been completely healthy for ... drum roll please ... less than 40 minutes this season.

And after reaching that apex in the first two periods of Tuesday's 2-1 win in Montreal, finally getting Frantisek Kaberle back as well as the other four defensemen who were injured in January, the Canes started going the other way Tuesday when Cory Stillman sprained his right knee and it only got worse in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Bruins.

First, Erik Cole slid awkwardly into Glen Murray's right knee with his right hip, suffering a likely hip pointer — a painful contusion to the exposed hip bone. Cole missed one game last week with a similar injury and wasn't able to put much weight on the leg when he left the ice.

Then, not five minutes later, Scott Walker jumped Andrew Alberts after Alberts led with his leg into a hit and, in the process of beating the stuffing out of Alberts, managed to injure his right arm.

X-rays on both were negative and Cole and Walker will be re-evaluated Friday, which the team is taking as an off day to travel to Minnesota for Saturday's game against the Wild. Barring an unexpected setback overnight, both will make the trip with the team. Stillman, meanwhile, is expected to miss at least a week.

LTD, Brindy got a double minor for high sticking (w/ blood) and then another penalty in the 3rd (I don't remember what it was).

Whitney didn't just break Ron Francis's franchise record he destroyed it. The Bruins broadcasters said Ron got the record in the 80s when they were the Whalers and that his hat trick was like 8 minutes.

The Walker fight sounded good too, the Bruins radio guys were talking about how great a fighter he is for such a small guy.

Great win! Lets get another one in Minnesota! GO CANES!!

N&O sez this morning that Cole's right hip is the problem. His hip hit Glenn Murray's knee when they collided. Walker hurt his right arm in the fight, although I thought I heard last night his knee was also a concern. X-rays show no major problems, so that's a good thing.

SoCalcaniac

Here's the full game article from this morning's N&O including the update on the injuries:

Canes have a ball
Whitney leads way with 5-point effort

Luke DeCock, Staff Writer
BOSTON - In a season in which the Carolina Hurricanes have been barraged by questions, whether asked of them by outsiders or themselves, there were more questions Thursday, albeit of the kind that are just plain fun to answer.
"Did you enjoy the Ray Whitney show?" Eric Staal asked.
"How long did that take?" Craig Adams asked.
"Am I the first star?" Whitney asked.
There were other, less pleasant questions -- "How badly are Erik Cole and Scott Walker hurt?" foremost among them -- but on a night when Whitney scored three goals in 100 seconds to turn a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead, the Canes weren't lacking for answers. And they had a 5-2 win over the Boston Bruins, too.
Trevor Letowski, making the most of an opportunity to play with Rod Brind'Amour and Whitney, set up the first goal of Whitney's five-point night. Staal set up the second, and Whitney did the work himself on the third, cutting from behind the net to slip a backhand between Tim Thomas' legs.
"It was one of those nights," Whitney said. "I was the beneficiary of some hard work by the other guys."
"You were on fire," Staal interjected as he walked past Whitney's locker.
"I was on fire," Whitney said. "Let's be honest."
Whitney scored so fast he broke one of those Ron Francis franchise records that looked like it would be around forever. He started by tying the score 1-1 with 4:24 to play in the second period; his third, with 2:44 to play, was greeted by one lonely hat and a cascade of boos.
"Things happen quick in this game," Boston coach Dave Lewis said, "but normally you don't want them to happen that quick."
By the time the second intermission rolled around, Whitney had picked up an assist on Justin Williams' power-play goal. Even after play ended, Whitney was piling up points, given a belated assist on Brind'Amour's empty-net goal that originally was credited to Frantisek Kaberle.
The hat trick was the fastest in the NHL this season and more than four times faster than Francis' Hartford/Carolina franchise record of 8:05. More important, the Canes won consecutive games for the first time in almost a month to open a critical three-game road trip, rebounding from a dismal first period.
"Ray definitely gave us life," Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward said. "He took it upon himself to take his game to another level."
But the Canes lost Cole midway through the second period when he collided with Glen Murray, sliding into Murray's right knee with his right hip -- a likely hip pointer, a painful contusion of the hip bone and the aggravation of a hip injury Cole has been playing through lately.
Walker missed the third period after injuring his right arm pummeling Andrew Alberts during a second-period scrap.
X-rays found no major injuries for both Hurricanes. They are expected to travel with the team to Minnesota today and be re-evaluated by doctors there. On Tuesday, the team lost Cory Stillman, who will miss at least a week with a sprained right knee.
The Canes struggled early, but Ward stopped 11 shots in the opening 10 minutes and the first 13 he faced. The Bruins scored late in the first and could have had more in the second when Brind'Amour picked up a four-minute high-sticking penalty, but the Canes survived.
And then Whitney took over.
Whitney's final assist gave him not only the first five-point game of his career, but also 21 points in the past 14 games.
He now has 246 NHL goals, so here's another question: How was that only his second career hat trick? "I pass a lot," Whitney quipped on a night he had a natural hat trick and all the answers.

Couple of questions since I missed the whole damn thing:

2. Did Tim Thomas make any comments this time about the Wizard padding his points so he could get a bigger contract?
Bwahahahaha :D

You were on to something there LTD- I saw him actually say these words on the NESN "Overtime" show last night, and gosh he had steam coming out of his ears- just like he always does when we play them-lol; so here goes:

I guess the feeling is shellshocked, but it's also mad," said Boston goalie Tim Thomas, whose defense left him to be picked apart by the sharp-shooting Whitney (24 goals for the season). "If a guy tries to turn into a hero like that, let's at least try to put the body on him."

and this was just a funny bit that made me laugh:

Whitney skated around as if he were sporting a red shirt, denoting that he was not eligible for contact. He scored his first at 15:36, and his second at 16:45, and in the old NHL, it was right about then that someone would have knocked him three rows back into the loge (plenty of seating there last night, by the way). Instead, the game rolled on, without the Boston bench waving a white flag or asking for a time out.

pretty safe to assume Tim Thomas is glad we're done with the B's this year.

and this was just a funny bit that made me laugh:

pretty safe to assume Tim Thomas is glad we're done with the B's this year.

God I hate Boston....hate hate hate em! This win was BETTER THAN BEATING THE RED SOX!!!!!!!!!

Wait a sec...nothing compares to beating the Red Sox....okay, but THIS WAS DAMN CLOSE to it!! :D

I liked this little comment in the boston globe's write up:

the Boston defense scrambled like the three-egg special at Denny's

Congrats to Whitney on the Hat Trick, and I hope Walker and Cole are alright.

"It was one of those nights," Whitney said. "I was the beneficiary of some hard work by the other guys."

"You were on fire," Staal interjected as he walked past Whitney's locker.

"I was on fire," Whitney said. "Let's be honest."

Comedy. Gold. Staal performs the jedi mind trick on Whitney and everything. All they need now is to sneak into an opposing team's locker room using the wookie prisoner ruse.

By the time the second intermission rolled around, Whitney had picked up an assist on Justin Williams' power-play goal. Even after play ended, Whitney was piling up points, given a belated assist on Brind'Amour's empty-net goal that originally was credited to Frantisek Kaberle.
official score sheet says Kaberle... wtf?

and stats page has whitney with 41 assists (saying he got 2...)

They gave that empty net assist to Frank originally, then they changed it to Whitney puck_it...... the official score sheet was changed to reflect Whitney with 3G/2A 5pts..... ;)

Atlanta is heading off for the nasty of nasties road trip (at Colorado, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Ottawa) before yet another road game here in Raleigh. Here's hoping Colorado buries them in precisely the way that Kruschev did not bury us, and we take care of freaking business, and we get that much closer to seeing that Tuesday Feb. 20th game as a battle for the division lead.

Well, since Tampa's start time is 7:30, if we are able to put a beat-down on the Thrash, we will tie for the division lead (3-way, Tampa would have 2 games in hand at that moment including the game they would be in the 3rd period of).
