McCabe furious over diving fine
Canadian Press

3/20/2003

TORONTO (CP) - An angry Bryan McCabe of the Toronto Maple Leafs is among the first NHLers to be fined $1,000 US by the NHL for diving.

In only its second week of penalizing players who ``cross the embarrassment line'' when it comes to flagrant dives, McCabe is on a list of five players that the league decided were a little too light on their skates last week.

On the list with McCabe are New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro, Darius Kasparaitis and Matthew Barnaby of the New York Rangers and Shaun Van Allen of the Ottawa Senators.

McCabe was called out for an incident with the Canucks' Todd Bertuzzi in Vancouver during the Leafs' 1-0 win last Saturday. The two became entangled in front of the net and then exchanged gloved pushes with McCabe eventually flopping to the ice. Bertuzzi was given a two-minute minor for holding. McCabe escaped punishment until now.

And he was furious when told by a reporter that he was now wearing the NHL's version of the scarlet letter.

``I am? For what? For Bertuzzi pushing me? You can quote me on this. Did I dive when he speared me in the (private parts) and they didn't call a penalty? They had a picture of it in the paper,'' said a steaming McCabe, a player who does not have a reputation for diving.

``They didn't call a penalty and now I'm a (expletive) diver because he punched me in the head and I went down?''

Before the exchange with Bertuzzi, in a graphic exchange caught by a Canadian Press photographer, the Canuck was clearly testing the strength of McCabe's protective cup.

If the league's intent is to remove flagrant diving from its game by publicly humiliating players - the lists are supposed to be posted in team dressing rooms - it doesn't wash with McCabe.

``They can put me down (on their list) ... whatever. They don't call half the (crap) that goes on. I get speared in the (groin) the play before, then I get punched in the head and I go down and it's a dive? So (expletive) them.''

After McCabe's rant, he went back into the private area of the dressing room, but he could be heard loudly cursing as he told his teammates that he'd been listed as a diver.

McCabe put on quite a show 45 minutes ago in his game with Columbus.

When called for hooking near the end of the 2nd, in the middle of Columbus's PP, meaning that Columbus now had a 5-3 advantage McCabe really mouthed off to the ref. Looked like he said, "You're a f*ckin' joke! F*ck you!" Suddenly that 2 min. penalty became 4 minutes, with that extra 2 min. for unsportsmanlike.

That little outburst led to Columbus scoring on their 5 on 3, and another goal 5 on 4! Still a little frustrated McCabe??!!!

It's still 3-2 Columbus.. . . . this has been a fun one to watch.

just edited: Stupid Leafs! They just tied it on a PP!

I'm so glad you posted about this game. I caught the OT and was so happy to see the Leafs lose. Sorry Wes (he did have a great stop on a breakaway.)

Then I turned the channel in time to see Jose Theodore go ape-sh*t after a player.

How fun! I'll have to remember that! :D

Usually, I'm one of the first people to say you win as a team and you lose as a team, but boy McCabe really screwed up tonight. As a direct result of his actions, the momentum of that game changed, and swung in Columbus' favor. Columbus deserved to win, every bit as much as Toronto deserved to lose.

I'm thinking it would be great to repeat it like they do "aaairball, aaairball" for a b-ball player. "Diiiiiiver, Diiiiiver, Diiiiiver".

That's going to be really awesome come Tuesday! I wish I could be there to chant it with you guys! I've always loved going to Devils games and booing Scott Stevens these past couple seasons. Perhaps along with yelling "DIVER" each time Mccabe touches the puck, the crowd could boo everytime a Leafs player other than Wesley touches the puck!!!

Nah, that'd get annoying.

Speaking of hecklers, two of the six season tickets my dad shares with his ticket group are in 301 Row A. The rest being in the first row of 304. I meant to ask you this earlier based on some of the things you posted here raleighcanesfan a bit back but I forgot. Are you the guy with the big booming voice that sits on the left side of row A there? Guy that yells "Way to go Yamaguchi!" etc.? If so, I just wanted to say your heckling really adds to the experience. I can't remember any more of the things I've heard you say but they usually crack me up. I haven't sat over there in those seats in months though, I think the last time I sat over there was at the New Jersey Devils home game and before that the Atlanta 5-3 loss. I was a few seats to the right of you if you're who I'm thinking you are. The way your voice booms down there I think the players can probably hear you down there!

If you're not who I'm thinking about, oops!

Are you in 304, RCF? We are in 304 Row C (seats 15-18), and will be there on Tuesday, so you should come say Hi. There is one guy in Row D and over some, that always woofs with the "Who let the dogs out?" song, and says some really loud funny things during the game. He has a short crew cut. Makes me laugh every time.

Our fans are quick...they will be doing it right away! The guys I sit near are great hecklers! They'll be on it!

Well, next season at a Thrashers game, see if you can get them to the do the tomahawk chop along with the O-o-O-o-o-ooo, like they do for the Braves. I always thought that would be funny, but maybe I'm warped. :spin:

That is and would be brilliant...especially considering that the people who own the Braves also own the Thrashers, am I correct?

Excellent. I hope Canesluver is paying attention. She likes to make signs and she sits in a good place to get them caught on camera. :D
