The really bad thing about this format is that now the day on which the state shuts down will sometimes be Thursday instead of the traditional Friday.

I always loved skipping school on ACC Friday.

Today is my son's birthday. He was born 5 years ago on ACC Friday. We watched the first round games from the delivery room. State won that day BTW, went all the way to the Finals on Sunday. What a great day to be born. The opening round of the ACC tournament is absolutely one of my favorite days of the year.

Talking about skipping school, I remember back in the day that even in middle school the principal would pump in the radio broadcast over the PA system.

Can we just shut down for both days now?

Go Wolfpack! Looking forward to Sid feeling the power in his red jacket.

We always watch a bit of the tournament towards the end of our classes. The teachers use it as an incentive for us to work faster. I'm pretty sure they have it on all the tvs in the cafeteria as well...

Fun ending. I had a good feeling about State when they missed those shots at the end of regulation, called the TO and Atsur walked over to the bench laughing about missing his shot. They seemed WAY loose. The same could not be said for the BDevils.

Man that red coat is RED!

State played a great game. Atsur was unstoppable after halftime.

The Wake game was pheeeenomenal. Could've swore that game was going to OT3 when that last shot went up, and it double-bounced. wow.
And yeah, Hale was something else in OT(s).

No joke! What an awesome game. I sat there yelling at the tv all evening - what a nail biter. I heard one of the announcers say " It was a Hale Storm!" Thank goodness for Harvey bringing it in overtime. Someone should have him bronzed.

State played incredible against UVA. 14 points down and the half and to win with authority. If the NCAA doesn't let them in their tourney, then I say that UNC is bribing the admins. Next opponent for State: VT or WF.

Sorry fighter ... but State needs to win the torunament to get in.

Great effort tonight. Costner and McCauley have been quite the front line, and Fells is so long ... he's becoming a shutdown defender.

Yeah, no way State gets in with 14 losses unless they nab the automatic bid.

With that said, there's no reason they can't do it.

I'll agree, they need to win the tourny to get a bid. But yeah, no reason they can't. They've been playing some pretty solid ball. Atsur needs to assert himself more at times.. seems he can go a whole half without taking a shot in games.. throw the ball up more often, it's pretty likely to go in.

Also, when their game in the paint is working, they've been quite tough to stop.

Well, I really do not give a crap about ACC basketball but, we watched the last minute or so (which took FOREVER...I remember why I hate basketball) of that game killing time until HNIC starts. Mostly because I'm always an underdog fan, I am SO glad to see State going to the championship. Now, if they could beat UNC....I'd be THRILLED!!

I know the UNC alum at my work are quaking in their boots. They're so terrified of State!

C'mon guys....one more game!

Well State played a hard game against the heels + officials. Take away the phantom fouls on Beeker, i mean Hansborough, and it wasnt a contest. UNC looked tired the whole second half yet we were the ones coming off playing four days straight, go figure.

Clearly the better team lost today and its sad that the team thats playing the best in the ACC wont be in the NCAA. Hopefully the bracketeers will look at the game today and not give UNC the token #1 seed and make them work in the tournament.

The biggest shaft of the whole tournament was not giving Costner the MVP. He was by far the best player of the whole tournament regardless of who won.

Well, needless to say I'm disappointed in the final outcome, and I really can't comment on the quality of the officiating since I was spending way too much time flipping back and forth between hockey and basketball. But I'm completely proud of Sidney Lowe and the entire team. To come back against a very talented UNC team and bring it back within 3 points with under 2 minutes to play just showed how determined they were to fight it to the end.

"By no means am I disappointed," said Sidney Lowe, N.C. State's first-year coach. "I told our guys, `You can be hurt, but don't be disappointed because there's nothing to be disappointed about."

The Wolfpack's surprising run, with Lowe wearing a snazzy red jacket for each game, was reminiscent of N.C. State's unlikely run to the ACC and NCAA titles in 1983. Lowe was a star on that team and became the first person to win an ACC title game as a player and also coach in the championship game.

"These guys were absolutely amazing. What they did this weekend, I don't think too many people thought they could do it. I really don't," Lowe said. "But there were some people in that locker room that believed in them and they believed in themselves, and with every day that we won I think the confidence grew."

Yeah!

If they had been consistently the best team in the ACC there wouldn't be a doubt they'd be in. The only way to coast in the last weekend is to win the tournament and they came very close.

Hopefully the bracketeers will look at the game today and not give UNC the token #1 seed and make them work in the tournament.
Very few teams cakewalk through the tournament. UNC no doubt has a tough road ahead of them as they've been slotted into probably the hardest bracket matchups of the top 4 seeds. I think they'll have plenty of work cut out for them.

The only part of your post I agree with. He definitely deserved it.

Yeah, if Atsur had played the way he did the past month or so all season....oh thats right he couldnt. (Feel like an 06 Sabre pulling out that argument) Duke is coasting in, State busted ass beating ranked teams day after day in the tourney and during the season.

Agreed, few teams cakewalk but being a #1 seed gives them basically an easy draw to get further than a different seeding would. Their play in the season and how State exposed them today should have put them out of #1 and would have if it were anyone else other than the name UNC.

Not that I think State should be in but there's a lot better argument for them over Duke after the tournament based on the coasting comment.

Actually the NCAA wasnt on my mind in these posts, Im basing my opinions ACC tournament. State by far is playing better basketball than anyone else in the league. Its just too bad they're not on the radar as a team allowed to win by the refs.

As a State fan, I have to congratulate UNC for a great game. State played amazing, but I honestly don't think that any team in the NCAA could have beaten UNC today, although State probably was the only one that could come close. As for the NCAA not letting State in, that is completely ridiculous. I mean, really, put the beginning of the season aside because of the coaching change and State was as good as any other ACC team that advanced. The dismantling of Duke, UVA and VT proved it. The NCAA tournament lost a great asset by snubbing State. Costner not getting the MVP was also terrible, as he clearly was the biggest story of the tournament (ok, so maybe the MVP should go to Hainesborough's mask, but not the player, cause all people cared about was that mask). I do think that the ACC tournament should have a bigger impact on the selection because it seems that Duke and Maryland's terrible play was completely ignored. Oh well, State for NIT Champs.

dakuwan
03-11-2007, 08:55 PM
I agree with your post except the no one beating UNC part. They were worn out in the second half, you could see it in their play. They expected State to fold because they had played four days straight and because of that UNC played a tempo they couldnt maintain in the second half.

The calls made a huge impact in the game, there was only one or two legitimate fouls on Beeker yet he went to the line five or six times. There were reach ins almost every single time on State and even one wrestling russian cicle on Atsur. I guess McCauley and Fells magically left their feet and landed a few feet away from the ball those few times. The clear block when State got all ball and was within 1 point of UNC which was called a foul was a big swing in the momentum back away from State.

Im just saying that it should have been a one possession finish at the end going either way if the calls had been consistent.

I was excited to see us still in the game til the end. Carolina's depth clearly helped win the game for them, but almost wasn't enough to win. Had State hit another shot or two when it was down to a one point game, could of turned out different.

I'm very excited for next years, much needed depth!

As for the refs, they where consistantly bad as usual. They missed a number of calls on us too. I did think they were better then in years passed in that they were calling a fair amount on unc. Just a quick look at carolina's message board and it's covered in threads discussing how biased the refs were against their team. They afterall never commit any fouls. That and nobody respets unc when doing the seeding. Would they really be happy with a bye in the ncaa tourny though.

Fantastic fight by State. UNC is truly a juggernaut of a team on depth alone. Too bad State didn't play the whole season like the played the last month or so, or they'd be playing with the big boys.

Stellar tournament though, from start to finish, that's what basketball is all about.

Whoa - how did this thread get resurrected?

This was in N&O Sports today and too good to pass up:

RALEIGH - Seated on the podium in front of more than 1,400 Wolfpack Club members and N.C. State fans, men's basketball coach Sidney Lowe took a lighthearted crack from one of his newest coaching colleagues Monday night.

State football coach Tom O'Brien noted drily that Lowe was not among the hundreds underneath the tent for the Wolfpack Club Caravan dinner who raised their hands to identify themselves as State graduates, a reference to the degree Lowe finished at Saint Paul's College after playing four years at State.

O'Brien's quip drew laughs, but Lowe's comeback drew roars minutes later.

"I may not have raised my hand earlier, but I know how to beat Carolina and Duke," said Lowe, a reference to two of his first-year team's crowd-pleasing successes en route to a 20-16 finish. "I know how to raise my hand on that one."

Yeah baby! :smoke:
