Joseph waives no-trade clause as Hasek makes his comeback official

DETROIT -- Curtis Joseph has accepted his fate, realizing Dominik Hasek has replaced him as the starting goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings.
From Our Advertiser

Joseph has agreed to waive the no-trade clause in his contract and is prepared to move on, his agent said. But he'll only accept a trade to a city and team that meets his criteria.

"He's very disappointed but he's realistic," agent Don Meehan said Tuesday, several hours after Hasek announced during a teleconference that he was returning to the Wings after his one-year retirement. "(Joseph) understands you have to be flexible and move around in your life. He's resigned to the fact that it's Detroit's intentions to trade him."

While the Wings upgraded the position by bringing back Hasek, who has six Vezina Trophies (top goaltender), two Hart Trophies (NHL MVP), an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup championship, they're also in a quandary with Joseph, who has two years and $16 million remaining on his contract and won't be easy to trade.

"Ideally, as quickly as possible we'd like to get a goaltender moved. That's easier said than done in today's climate in the NHL," Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "Both (goalies) are well-paid. I'm going to have to be creative in order to put (a trade) together."

The Wings have been shopping Joseph for more than two weeks. Owner Mike Ilitch said last week that the club has received some offers for him.

Only a few teams -- the New York Rangers, Boston, St. Louis and Colorado -- are believed to be in the market for a goalie. The New York Post reported that the Rangers, possibly as a prelude to a trade for Joseph, are trying to deal goalie Mike Dunham to Boston.

Meehan said Joseph will consider several factors before approving a move, including the quality of schools in that city. He would also prefer to play for a Cup-contending club. Meehan said the Wings have discussed some potential trade destinations with him but it doesn't appear they're close to making a move.

Meehan said Joseph would prefer that a deal gets done quickly, but added, "Only if the conditions are right. Timing isn't an issue."

It is an issue for Holland, who doesn't want to head into training camp in September with the distraction of having both Joseph and Hasek on the roster.

Hasek, 38, hasn't strapped on his goaltending gear since the night the Wings clinched the Stanley Cup championship nearly 13 months ago. What little recreational hockey he's played since then was as a defenseman.

But he insists he's in excellent shape, that he's even lost eight pounds from his playing weight. And he said he's regained the desire to be the best and the hunger to win another title.

Hasek has no doubt he's ready for perhaps the biggest challenge of his Hall of Fame career.

"I wouldn't say to the Red Wings that I want to come back if I wasn't sure," Hasek said. "My batteries are recharged and I have the fire to compete again. I believe I can compete at the same level. I want to be 'The Dominator' again."

Hasek, so adamant about his retirement one year ago, said he first got the itch to come back while watching the playoffs on TV. He made his final decision about three weeks ago, when he met with Wings coach Dave Lewis in Austria. But the club told him to take some more time to be absolutely sure. After vacationing with his family in Spain last weekend, he informed the Wings on Monday that he's positive he wants to play.

"My primary motivation is to compete again," Hasek said. "I'm looking forward to competing with my teammates every day in practice."

Neither Hasek nor Holland believes the year off will have an adverse effect.

"Since I retired I've lived an active life," Hasek said. "In the winter, I played squash three or four times a week. I played hockey once a week as a defenseman. I played a lot of soccer. I feel I'm in good shape. That's also a reason I feel good about my decision."

At the end of the teleconference, Hasek was asked if his rival, recently retired Colorado goalie Patrick Roy, might return. Hasek's agent, Rich Winter, said Roy has filed his retirement papers with the NHL, preventing him from playing until after this upcoming season.

I wondered what the big sigh of releif I heard from the north as I walked my puppy today was! I guess detroit is releived as if he didn't wave it, he would have been hard to get rid of!

But he still gets to pick his team, if the team is willing to pay him and trade detroit somthing for him. I bet his trade is pretty cheap as detroit basically has to trade him to someone.

I'm not surprised. I'm sure he has no intentions of playing backup to Hasek if he can avoid it. I wonder if any of the teams on his list are willing to pay his price considering the CBA situation? Detroit may still find itself with the highest paid goalie tandem ever :eek2:

I think the Rangers will go for it. I'd have said Philly two weeks ago, but they signed Jeff Hackett. The price to get Cujo will probably be steep, but I think they'll pay it. Whether it gets them closer to a playoff berth is anybody's guess.

Meehan said Joseph will consider several factors before approving a move, including the quality of schools in that city.

How quaint. But aren't there quality private schools in every NHL city? Unless Cujo is a big public school supporter? ;)

Poor Cujo...what a *****y way to treat him...I hope he kicks butt and shows the Wings what they are missing!! Hasek will probably be a bust!! (wishful thinking)

I agree with you two...i hope that Hasek leads the wings to a losing season with no chance for the cup and that cujo goes on to accomplish greater things.

....yes, i am still a little bitter about the 2002 season finals...

Dude(s), don't hate on Hasek because of the Finals. He is one of the best goaltenders to play. I am excited that he's back. (But he's been one of my hockey idols since I was little.)

I won't believe this til I see it.

Report: Holland thinks of waiving Cujo

DETROIT - Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has thought about waiving goalkeeper Curtis Joseph, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

The paper said that Holland believed Joseph would be picked up by another team, despite his $8 million contract for each of the next two seasons. If another team picked up Joseph off of waivers, the Red Wings would be relieved of Joseph's contract.

However, the paper also said that Holland's preference continues to be trading Joseph, so Detroit gets something in return. Holland told the paper he has had some "interesting conversations" with other clubs regarding Joseph, but did not elaborate.

Joseph became expendable when Dominik Hasek announced his return to Detroit last month after a one-year retirement. Hasek helped lead the Red Wings to their third Stanley Cup in six years in 2002.

I highly doubt that Cujo will be waived. Detroit does not want him on a Western Conference team, specifically Colorado. I think that this may be some type of ploy by Holland.

couldn't agree more. I think Detroit will want as much control over the situation as possible, to try and steer him eastward. letting him hit the waiver wire could be catastrophic for them.

Gord Miller: Where does Cujo go?

While Red Wings' general manager Ken Holland has said it's possible that goaltender Curtis Joseph could be at the team's training camp in September, don't bet on it. That's the worst-case scenario for Detroit.

And that's why Holland has been lighting up switchboards aorund the National Hockey League this week, trying to move this Joseph deal along.

As it stands right now, three scenarios have emerged as front-runners. The first is a straight one-for-one deal with the Boston Bruins that would see Joseph go to Beantown for forward Martin Lapointe.

The deal would make sense on a number of levels. Joseph would address the Bruins' gaping hole in net, while Lapointe - a former Red Wing - would be welcome back in Detroit. But there's a stumbling block, and as usual with the Bruins it involves money. Boston is not willing to take on all of Joseph's $8 million a year salary, so it's likely the Red Wings would have to eat some of it - maybe as much as half of it. If they're willing to do that, there's a deal there to be made.

The other hitch? The Bruins are also talking to the Phoenix Coyotes about goaltender Sean Burke who would come at a much cheaper price.

The second scenario is a three-way trade between the Red Wings, Bruins and New York Rangers. This one would see Joseph go to New York, goaltender Mike Dunham go to Boston, and Lapointe go back to Detroit.

This deal makes sense on a number of levels as well. The Rangers are better equipped to take on all of Joseph's salary, while Dunham - a native of New England - would fit in nicely with Boston's salary structure. And of course, Lapointe would be a natural fit with the Red Wings.

But there's a hitch here as well. Rangers general manager Glen Sather is notoriously hard to trade with one-on-one. A three-way deal is difficult to make even in the best of times. A three-way deal with Sather is considered next to impossible.

That brings us to the third scenario - a trade with a Western Conference team. No, not Colorado. Don't expect the Red Wings to do the Avalanche a favour anytime soon.

It would actually involve Joseph's very first team the St. Louis Blues. Joseph would be a great fit there even with the team's money problems. They could, however, alleviate that problem by sending some of their high-priced players back to Detroit. Michigan native Doug Weight, for instance, has been rumoured to on the move for several months now.

Even when Holland finds that perfect fit, there's one hurdle that still has to be cleared - Joseph's no-trade clause. So once the Red Wings boss has that deal that makes sense for everyone, it has to make sense for Joseph as well. Only then can it be done.

Bruins indicate interest in Joseph

The Boston Bruins have had discussions with the Detroit Red Wings about goaltender Curtis Joseph.

General manager Mike O'Connell confirmed he has spoken with Red Wings GM Ken Holland last Friday about Joseph, who is the odd man out after Dominik Hasek announced his return from retirement. However, the Bruins were told to hang tight for at least the next couple of weeks.

"I talked to Detroit on Friday," said O'Connell. "They said we'll make sure we stay in touch."

O'Connell added that Joseph is a potential "big piece" to the Bruins' goaltending picture.

Following the loss of Jeff Hackett to free agency, the Bruins appear set to enter training camp with Steve Shields and Tim Thomas as their goaltending duo.

The St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers are also reportedly interested in Joseph, who carries with him a hefty $8-million price tag in each of the next two years.

Apparently it's really fun to lose 5-6 after an underachieving effort, not be worth your paycheck, fulfill a quarter of your potential, and miss the playoffs..

Maybe that's why he wants to go to New York.. Likes to play golf.

Joseph could be a 'big piece' for Bruins

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

DETROIT -- The Boston Bruins are interested in obtaining Red Wings goaltender Curtis Joseph, according to Boston's general manager.

Mike O'Connell confirmed the team has approached Detroit about Joseph, who became expendable when Dominik Hasek last month decided to come out of retirement to rejoin the Red Wings.

"I talked to Detroit on Friday. They said we'll make sure we stay in touch," O'Connell said during a conference call.

Calling Joseph a potential "big piece" to the Bruins' goaltending situation, O'Connell said he didn't expect to hear back from Detroit "for another couple of weeks."

Detroit signed Joseph, 36, last summer to a three-year, $24 million deal as Hasek's replacement. That contract includes a no-trade clause.

Detroit General Manager Ken Holland has said he hopes to have a deal to trade Joseph done before training camp starts in September.

Phone messages left with the Red Wings and Don Meehan, Joseph's agent, were not immediately returned.

Meehan: Cujo would not reject a trade
TSN.ca Staff

If the Detroit Red Wings were to work out a deal to send Curtis Joseph to Boston, it seems the veteran goaltender would not object.

Joseph's agent, Don Meehan, told the Boston Globe on Sunday that there is no list, per se, of the cities for which his star goalie would waive his no-trade clause.

"If you are asking me if Curtis would have an initial objection to playing in Boston, then the answer is no," he told the paper.

The Globe added that Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell expects to talk to Detroit GM Ken Holland again late this week about a deal to bring Joseph to Beantown.

The Bruins have been rumoured to be one of several teams with an interest in the $8 million-a-year goaltender. Reports have said that the Bruins wouldn't take on that salary without somehow stripping money out of the projected payroll for each of the next two or three years.

Joseph became expendable when Dominik Hasek announced his return to Detroit last month after a one-year retirement. Hasek helped lead the Red Wings to their third Stanley Cup in six years in 2002.

All arrows are pointing towards Boston...especially after them getting Sandy Macarthy and making LaPointe more expendable
