Saw JR on the evening news holding court, and found that they posted the whole transcript of the presser on the website. Verrry interesting:

RUTHERFORD HOLDS END-OF-SEASON PRESS CONFERENCE
Carolina Hurricanes
Apr 10, 2007, 4:36 PM EDT

Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford held a press conference on Tuesday, April 10, to address the media for the final time this season. Read on for a complete transcript as Rutherford addressed the media about this season and his plans to improve the team over the summer.

On the letdown from last year
RUTHERFORD: We expected a letdown for a period of time, but we certainly didn’t expect a letdown for 82 games. The fact that we were inconsistent for most of the season, we still put ourselves in a strong position even with a few weeks left in the season. When you look at it all, we had 88 points, I’m sure easily with our core play and inconsistency you could look at a minimum of five games or six games that would have got us to 100 points in a year where we were inconsistent and not focused from the start. We can look at this on a negative side, which it is, we can take as many positives out of it and move forward, which I think that’s what we intend to do. We intend to prepare ourselves, prepare ourselves for the first day of camp like we did the year we won and have a chance to win again.
On the New Jersey Devils being the last team to win the Stanley Cup and miss the playoffs the following year
RUTHERFORD: We have a similar structure, I believe, to the Devils. I don’t want to start comparing player to player, but a lot of their success was built around having such a great goalie. This was a year where we were in a transition year of a young goalie becoming a number one goalie. Unless you’ve been a goalie and been through that, you really don’t understand what that means.

Both our goalies are good, John Grahame (http://javascript<b></b>:void(0)) gave us some games, he’s a good goalie. Cam Ward (http://javascript<b></b>:void(0)) is going to have a great career, but his toughest year of his career is behind him, that transition year. So if you carry that over into your question about the Devils and where this team can go with the need to have great goaltending to win the Stanley Cup again, your answer is yes, we could do that. The nucleus of this team is very strong, we have a lot of good players, and we have the structure in place to win again.

On his meetings with the players Monday
RUTHERFORD: The player meetings for me are more fact-finding meetings as to their thoughts of how they played and some of their thoughts as to what went wrong during the season. Peter had his meetings also, so he’ll have some information from the players. We’ll gather this information and put it all together to see if that can help us make some decisions going forward.
I think if you go back in general, the year we won the cup, there was a focus from the first day of camp, and it was all business. The players were anxious to play, and anxious to win. We might as well not have even had training camp this year. Not anybody’s fault, but the players were still tired. They weren’t rested. There wasn’t the focus on that camp that there needs to be, and that’s one thing that we’re going to be able to do this year, unfortunately. We’ll have five months to prepare for it. But we’ll have the same focus at the start of next year’s training camp as the year we won the cup. We’ll get off to a better start, we’ll have more team togetherness, and the players will be more hungry. That’s basically the general message I’m getting from the players.

JR really hit the nail on the head.

JR seems to have a real good perspective on the season. He does not sound like he is in a panic and ready to blow things to bits. Changes yes, but not mass (fire at will) changes. I also like his take on Whitney & Walker. I really want both to stay but not if it totally breaks the bank.

good interview\press conference

I hope the meetings are as productive as they sounded - and in a postive light, as they sound. They absolutely could not have had a training camp that even resembled the post lockout camp. Good grief - they were still attending Cup parties during it. Gotta lost some perspective (and sleep).

That's got to be edited. He didn't say "season's ticket holders."

I really hope the Canes get a new radio station. They need to find a couple that span most of the state. 102.9 just doesnt cut it. They range on 102.9 is limited. I can get Boston, Toronto, and Philly games on the AM but, am unable to hear the Canes game once I pass over 95. Also, the Canes should put some more commercials out on the TV. The only commercials I ever see are on FSN during the game. Put some on WRAL and other stations during the peak hours.

I've seen little Ma & Pa shops market themselves better. That's nothing new though, lot of us have been griping about that for years. Incredibly inept marketing dept.

I listen to WRAL FM 101.5 all day every day in my office and all during the season - even well before the season started - they ran Canes commercials about 4 or 5 times a day. It was Chuck Kaiton and the commercial was advertising tickets.

Gee, and we're about to enter into contract negotiations with Cam? What do you do now that you've basically called him the next Brodeur? Go in and low-ball with "well this season was pretty tough..."? Heh.

I'm pretty sure that's right... something about not being able to sign a new contract until the rookie contract has officially expired... same thing with Staal this past off season..... I think they can work out the details (or at least they will with a wink wink, nudge nudge to the rules), but it can't be signed officially until 7/1 when the old one expires...

or my mind is completely failing me and I'm imagining that..... :)

No you're not imagining ss or puck_it, it's July 1; if ya'll recall when JR re-signed #12, it was basically already worked out with his agents at Bobby Orr Group and then boom, signed. ;)

Yeah, it was pretty early on July 1 when the Staal contract was announced on line. I think that Commie's was next - or he might have been third - but Commie's was announced around 12:00 noon. That's the one I was looking for and the first mention on the internet was on the French-Canadian TSN website - in French. I had to call up my high school French to translate it to know if he would be back.

But, anyway, it was clear to me that all the details had been worked out already and all that remained for July 1 was signing and announcing.

I spent all day on July 1 looking for announcements and drafting a spreadsheet of who had signed and how much they got and who was left to be signed. Yeah, I get a charge out of the business end of the sport.

...and on the topic of TV commercials, I really wish the marketing department were a little more creative. How about the Bobby Granger commercials for the Rangers? They're hilarious. :)

Ours are excruciating. ...and don't get me started on the TWC commercials with poor Staal reading the cue cards! Could someone please help the poor boy muster a little more enthusiasm??? ;)

.....and again on the topic of TV commercials, though I realize [sorry] I'm starting to veer this thread off-course. Ya'll probably remember these team ads but I think they were originally broadcast before I moved to town. They just recently got posted to YouTube. These are good, catchy, creative ads.

QM those Bobby commercials are seriously hilarious. I love the ones with the Czech Models w/Jagr & Prucha feeding him lines and he ends up telling the girls they are fat cows (or something like that) and they flip Bobby over the boards. I also liked that preseason commercial they had with Al Montoya and a bunch of the Ranger youngsters getting a lesson in NYC "attitude" and him teaching the kids how to say fuggedaboutit. Totally hilarous, the newer one with him trying to hang with Henrik is funny (and creative) too.

I really didn't like the Here to play, here to stay campaign. I just didn't think it was the right theme to come up with out of the lockout. (e.g. feeding the mentality that if things don't turn around, we're leaving)

Yeah, SHC- you hit it on the head MARKETERS. Big time NYC type marketers.

I mean do we even have one marketer? or is marketing considered Canesvision?

We brought in a new guy about two months ago, Curt Johnson. He was the GM for the Kansas City Wizards (MLS). They had a great record and great attendance under his watch. A + for the Canes is that he's from Raleigh so he knows the area. Hopefully he can talk Rutherford in spending a little more to get quality advertising/promotions.

Yeah, there was quite a lot of discussion here when we hired him. I was sorta hoping we might notice he was here before the end of the season, lol.

Maybe we would have if we were gearing up for a game tonight or tomorrow night.

You never know - maybe he was responsible for snagging the (surprisingly good) ChevyCanes hats for us :)
