I'll keep this in the international thread so as we get closer we can just add to the discussion-
Canada Adds to Worlds Roster
A second wave of players has been added to the Canadian roster in preparation for the upcoming World Men's Hockey Championship.
Last year's Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes will have at least four players on the team.
Goaltender Cam Ward along with forwards Eric Staal and Justin Williams and veteran defenceman Mike Commodore have accepted an invitation to play for Canada.
"(Carolina's misfortune) was some good fortune for the Canadian national team because the guys were all willing to come over," GM Steve Yzerman told The Canadian Press on Friday. "They've just been through the highest pressure situations and responded well.
"Their experience in those situations will be invaluable to us."
The St. Louis Blues will also be well represented as defenceman Barret Jackman and forward Jamal Mayers have also been added to the team along with Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jason Chimera.
The new additions bring the current roster to 12 players. Defenceman Eric Brewer, goalie Dwayne Roloson and forwards Rick Nash, Shane Doan and Mike Cammalleri committed last week.
Canada plays an exhibition game in Tampere, Finland, on April 24th and opens the world championship four days later against Germany. It's all coming together quickly.

According to USAHockey
2007 IIHF Men's Worlds - Team USA to be named Monday
But according to Luke
Team Canada was not the only outfit looking for few Hurricanes with some extra time to kill this spring.
Forwards Erik Cole and Chad LaRose and goalie John Grahame all were selected to play for the U.S. men's national team for the IIHF World Championships, scheduled to start later this month in Moscow.
Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg also may play for the German national team, coach Peter Laviolette said Tuesday.

If memory serves, there's no way to actually watch these games, is there? I can't remember ever seeing those World championship games.

One year you could watch them on your computer for a price. I would presume that's probably an option.
It would be nice for VS to air, but I suppose being in Moscow (it's 3am there now) that it would have to be tape delayed or something. I'm not expecting anything (sadly).

I recall a couple years ago, some World Championships games were actually on Center Ice- I think we were playing Canada- and during the lockout we ordered up the package online to watch on our computer. It was easily the most entertaining international hockey ever. It was in Latvia, and they were singing and dancing and just carrying on in the stands, and the announcer (only one announcer for int'l hockey apparently) had a major Doug Weight fixation- just poured on the adulation, praising his hockey sense and passing ability every time he had the puck, and we hooted every time. Little did we know Doug Weight would become a Hurricane..... lol.
Here a nice bit of irony from USA Hockey's website:
On Monday at 3 p.m EDT, USA Hockey will announce 17 players to the 2007 U.S. Men's National Team that will compete at the 2007 IIHF Men's World Championship in Russia, where Team USA opens April 27 against Austria. Among those participating in a Monday conference call: Mike Sullivan, defenseman Jack Johnson (above) and forward Erik Cole.
I had read a bit in the Orange County Register, that JJ would not go to Manchester to help the Monarchs playoff push, but would go to Moscow (better for his development say the Kings brass) and I wondered if EC was going to go over how that would be- just kind of funny that they'd become team mates in another way......

Here's the press release from USA Hockey:
:usa: :usa:
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey today named the first 18 players to its U.S. Men’s National Team that will compete at the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in Moscow, Russia, April 27-May 13.
“We’ve got a good mix of players with World Championship experience and younger players who will likely be a part of our program for years to come,” said Jim Johannson, senior director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. “Our National Team Advisory Group has done an outstanding job in selecting players who we feel will excel in international competition.”
USA Hockey’s National Team Advisory Group consists of National Hockey League general managers Brian Burke (Anaheim Ducks), David Poile (POY-uhl) (Nashville Predators), Ray Shero (SHEER-oh) (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Don Waddell (Wah-DEHL) (Atlanta Thrashers).

Rounding out the first group of players named to the U.S. roster are defenseman Brian Pothier (New Bedford, Mass./Washington Capitals) and forwards Tyler Arnason (Oklahoma City, Okla./Colorado Avalanche) and Toby Petersen (Minneapolis, Minn./Edmonton Oilers).
Team USA will play an exhibition game against Sweden at Globe Arena in Stockholm on April 25 at 7 p.m. (local time)/1 p.m. (EDT) before beginning competition in the IIHF World Championship on April 27 at 4:15 p.m. (local time)/8:15 a.m. (EDT) against Austria. The United States will play two additional preliminary-round games against Belarus (April 29) and the Czech Republic (May 1) before the qualification round begins.
NOTES: Additional players will be named to the U.S. roster in the coming days … Cole, Esche and Grahame were all members of the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team that competed at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy … The average age of the first 18 players named to Team USA is 25.1 years old … Mike Sullivan, former head coach of the NHL’s Boston Bruins and an assistant coach with the 2006 U.S. Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team, was named head coach of the 2007 U.S. Men’s National Team on March 26. Well, it'll be available online:
http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=300162
And on TV if you get the WCSN channel. I've never heard of it (and I doubt it's carried anywhere)
How I'd love to be able to DVR the games, but alas no.
Edit:
Okay - I guess it's available (some of the time?) on
REGIONAL SPORTS NETWORKS
Altitude Sports and Entertainment - Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Idaho, Montana and parts of Nevada, New Mexico and South Dakota
SportsNet New York - New York Metropolitan area
Comcast SportsNet West - Northern California and Western Nevada
Comcast SportsNet Detroit - Detroit Metropolitan Area
Comcast SportsNet Chicago - Chicago Metropolitan Area
Comcast Charter Sports Southeast - Southeastern United States

E- Where did you get that listing of channels? I get a bunch of them on satellite so I can probably cobble some stuff together......
Who bailed on Mediazone.com? They had all the games online in 2005 and even though they price was originally a little high, I think we ended up paying $9.95 for unlimited games, and they archived stuff that you might miss due to the time difference in Vienna. Anyway, it was like watching TV.
I just clicked on the wcsn.com site, and I guess it is similar to MediaZone. We don't have World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) on DirecTV yet, (although we now seem to have alot of other wierd sports channels I've never heard of) so I guess, if I can't cobble together all the games via Altitude and Comcast Mid Atlantic/New England/Chicago, then maybe we'll pay the $4.95 "monthly pass" so we can see everything. I might not need them though, we'll see what turns up on the channel guide.....
Someone tell me what would be so hard to put this stuff on the so-called "world wide leader in sports?" Yeah, I know- not glamorous enough.

I might have messed up with that list.
It's on this page
http://web.wcsn.com/schedule/broadcast.jsp
But now looking at it, I'm guessing it's just a list of networks that broadcast the show listed at the top of page?
Maybe a false alarm....

Do you really think the NHL would go for this?
While the idea sounds great, I'm not so sure I like the idea of the Stanley Cup champion winning it in mid-June, then having to play meaningful games right off the bat in September. Maybe if these games could be played as the Cup champion's exhibition games?

And......Staal and Staal will be together on the Canadian team:
http://www.pittsburghpenguins.com/team/features/arts/2471.0.php
Staal, only 18, is eager to represent Team Canada in Russia.
“I am really excited to play,” he said. “There’s no question about it. I’d love to be a part of Team Canada and I am definitely honored being named to it. I am really excited.”
Staal will join his brother, Eric, on the Team Canada roster.
“I already knew he was going. It’s kind of neat,” he said. “It should be a lot of fun.”
Side note, Malkin and Gonchar are added to Russia's roster. Hope Evgeni finds it easier to get back here from Russia this time around.

There's a new article about the Worlds on ch.com, with some comments from the guys who will be playing.
http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=300419
“You want to compete for the Stanley Cup, but we’re not doing that, so it’s the next best thing,” said Staal, an alternate for Team Canada’s entry in the 2006 Olympics. Besides his Hurricanes teammates, he will also be playing alongside his younger brother Jordan, whose Pittsburgh Penguins were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
“It’s always good to do something competitive even though you’re not in the NHL playoffs and playing for the Stanley Cup,” said Williams, who will be appearing in his third World Championship. “You’re playing for the gold medal and you’re playing for your country. Five and a half months would be a lot of time off not to do anything competitive, and it’s an honor to be selected.”
While team USA features a few of the usual suspects in Cole and Grahame, who were both on the 2006 Olympic Team, surprise inclusions Hutchinson and LaRose will be representing their country for the first time.
“I think it’s a great experience to play in international hockey,” said Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford. “It’s a different style of hockey, and a whole different experience. You get to play with different players on other teams, and the other part is that they don’t get five months off, now they get more like four months, which is better for them. It’ll be a great experience.”
Also interesting:
In a strange twist of fate, the other goaltender selected by Canadian GM Steve Yzerman was Dwayne Roloson, who was Ward’s opposite to start last year’s Stanley Cup Finals for Edmonton.

After a quarterfinal loss at the 2006 Olympics and missing 23 playoff games for Carolina that year due to a late-season injury, it was an easy decision for the Panther's Cole to join the team.

From Luke's blog:
One late addition: Hurricanes goaltending prospect Daniel Manzato, who is expected to return from Europe to play for Albany (AHL) next season, joins Martin Gerber on the Switzerland roster.
You think he meant Aebischer? (too lazy to look up the Swiss roster)

Actually, Gerber and Aebischer are both on the Swiss roster. Looks like most teams have at least 3 goalies on the roster.

My point was that Gerber is in N Amer now, playing backup for his NHL team. I guess Manzanto "joined" him on paper.
