Way to go, Bates. Seeing it was tainted a bit for me since it was followed by Barry the Mullet taking a shot at the Canes during the highlight. Stupid *&^*%!

Story from Rocky Mountain News:

Avalanche makes it all worth wait
Battaglia aids victory in postponed game

By Aaron J. Lopez, Rocky Mountain News
March 21, 2003

Bates Battaglia, your membership card is in the mail.

Thank you for officially joining the Colorado Avalanche in its ongoing game of Catch Me If You Canuck.

Nine days after Colorado rescued him from regular-season monotony, Battaglia filled his job description to the letter Thursday night against the San Jose Sharks.

In addition to throwing his weight around in the corners, Battaglia planted himself in front of the net and scored his first goal in a Colorado uniform to help the Avalanche beat the Sharks 2-0 in a game that had been pushed back 22 hours because of this week's snowstorm.

Battaglia, acquired March 11 in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes, had not scored since Jan. 3 - a span of 35 games.

"Goals haven't been coming quite so easy for me this year as it is, so it's nice to get one," he said. "It's a little bit of a load off your mind."

The victory ended Colorado's two-game losing streak and helped it remain within six points of the Northwest Division-leading Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks routed the Nashville Predators 7-3 later Thursday night.

Colorado has nine games remaining, while Vancouver has seven left before the playoffs begin in three weeks.

"It was a solid effort," Avalanche coach Tony Granato said. "It's a win. It's one that we feel good about.

"You don't want to have to turn a switch on April 10. You want to make sure you're playing well for 60 minutes. You want to make sure all 23 or 24 guys on your roster are contributing."

In addition to Battaglia, the biggest contributors against the downtrodden Sharks were goalie Patrick Roy and the Colorado penalty killing units.

Roy, playing for the first time since Saturday, showed little sign of rust, making 29 saves en route to his fourth shutout this season and the 65th of his career.

"Somehow I felt great," Roy said. "We didn't skate (Wednesday) and nothing in the morning (Thursday). Making a few good saves at the beginning of the game put me in it. I felt great. I was pleased with the way things went."

The pleasure meter dropped slightly in the second period as San Jose took 16 shots while trying to capitalize on three power-play opportunities.

Roy and the Colorado penalty killers were up to the task, preserving a 1-0 lead heading into the final period.

San Jose's comeback opportunities took a hit when Adam Foote scored his eighth goal of the season, 2 minutes, 57 seconds into the third. After his initial shot from the slot was blocked by Rob Davison, Foote scrambled after the loose puck and fired a second shot past Miikka Kiprusoff.

"That was a big two points for us," Foote said. "Having the (snow) delay, we were worried about how we would start. We didn't have the legs or the momentum, but we hung on, and Patty made some big saves for us."

The beginning of the game indeed had a strange feeling. Because it was a 5 p.m. start, the Pepsi Center was about half-empty when the puck dropped. A lighting problem caused some long shadows on the ice for the first 10 to 15 minutes of the first period.

The late-arriving spectators who took a break from shoveling snow out of the streets perked up when Battaglia scored on a power play at 13:47.

Avalanche defenseman Martin Skoula helped set up the goal when he made a nice pass to Steven Reinprecht, who made a one-touch centering pass to Battaglia alone in front of the net.

"They were moving it all over the place," Battaglia said. "I had a hard time keeping my eye on the puck. They were moving it back and forth and I was just sitting there waiting for the opportunity."

The Sharks, playing the first of three games in three days, were fortunate to get out of the period down only a goal. Colorado converted only one of three power-play chances while Milan Hejduk failed to get his stick on a crossing pass while staring into an open net.

The Avalanche, which improved to 9-0-2-1 in its past 12 home games, then went into survival mode, killing three power plays in the first 10 minutes of the second period.
