Defenseman Played 18 Games With Carolina in 2002-03
Bruno St. Jacques, who came to Carolina in a February trade, signed a one-year contract on Wednesday.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has signed defenseman Bruno St. Jacques to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

“We look for Bruno to solidify his place in our lineup this season based on his play last year,” said Karmanos.

In 18 games with Carolina, St. Jacques (6’ 2”, 204 lbs.) notched two goals, earned five assists (7 points) and accumulated 12 penalty minutes. He also played eight games with Carolina’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Lowell Lock Monsters, recording one goal and one assist. The Hurricanes acquired St. Jacques, 22, along with right wing Pavel Brendl from Philadelphia on Feb. 7. Prior to the trade, St. Jacques played in six games with the Flyers and 30 with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL where he earned seven assists.

Philadelphia selected St. Jacques in the ninth round, 253rd overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. The Montreal native has played in 31 NHL games and 141 AHL games since turning professional at the end of the 1999-00 season.

Carolina signs young defenseman to one-year deal
July 10, 2003
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Bruno St. Jacques to a one-year contract worth $375,000 on Thursday.

St. Jacques showed promise at the end of last season after being acquired Feb. 7 from Philadelphia. He had two goals and five assists in 18 games with the Hurricanes.

The 22-year-old St. Jacques could move into the lineup if Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford can't sign Danny Markov, who was acquired in a draft-day trade from Phoenix. Markov, a restricted free agent, is threatening to play in Russia if he doesn't get a contract he likes from the Hurricanes.

St. Jacques played 20 or more minutes in seven of his 18 games with Carolina.

Defense was one of the Hurricanes' weakness last season. Carolina allowed 240 goals, third-worst in the Eastern Conference.

The team signed veteran free agent Glen Wesley, who played with the club last year before being traded to Toronto, to a one-year contract worth $2.75 million Tuesday.

small personal rant: there are those (at ch.com specifically) that keep harping that the defense isn't/wasn't an issue. Um - 3rd worst GAA in the Conference? And that was with a pretty healthy defensive corp.

well done for St. Jacques and the team. keep the signings coming, JR.

and nccanes, I swear there are people at CH.com who sound like they don't think we even need a defense, just a couple more offensive players and we'd be set

Glad to see Bruno signed! I understand the rationale for all the one-year contracts but at the same time wouldn't we be better off offering some of the less expensive players longer contracts? I mean salary cap or no, $375,000 for an NHL quality defenseman is a good price. I hope all these short contracts won't mean huge pay raises in the future in order to keep our team together.

As long as JR is aware of where the problem lies (and he is), it doesn't matter much what anyone else thinks. The interesting part is that 'defense', in this case, means 'defensemen', not 'goalie'. Management doesn't seem to blame Weekes for last year.

Bruno for Sami was a pretty even trade for the Canes and Flyers, based on team needs, even if Pudge never decides to show up.

I think I missed something. Who is 'Pudge'?

I am glad you said something about all the 1-year contracts. I dont understand the rational of that either....The longer they play together a better chemistry they will have..

Im sure hes reffering to Brendl, but I completely disagree that a Kappy for Bruno trade is even.

But, I am very happy to see Bruno locked in for another year.

Well This is good! Bruno is a good young D-man who seems like he may have a slight offensive touch.

Now lets get Markov!

I don't know with a salary cap I'm sure most everybodys salary is going to go down probaly.

The reasons for one year deals is because nobody is going to know what will happen after the end of next year. There may not be a 04/05 season! SO why take a uneeded risk with players like this who will mroe than likely be easy to resign after the CBA is done? Now I really don't know what risks there are in the CBA but apparently the owners do as alot of one year contracts are getting signed all over the NHL.

I totally agree....when I think about Bruno, I remember him bringing the puck right up the middle..NO dump and chase...and fire that thing right at the goalie...how refreshing it was to see that!! :spin:

I completely disagree that a Kappy for Bruno trade is even.

I love it when people completely disagree.

First of all, it would help to decide which 'Sami' we're discussing.. the 2002/3 Hurricanes Sami (43 games, 18 pts, .41 ppg), the 2002/3 Flyers Sami (28 games, 13 pts, .46 ppg), or the career average Sami (548 games, 361 pts, .65 ppg).

Career average Sami would rank sixth among Canes forwards.. 2002/3 Sami would be seventh, or eighth. All of them will be 30 years old in August, and then are only one year from unrestricted free agency. All of them have dynamic young players in the Canes system that occupy the same position.

Bruno St. Jacques had 7 pts in 18 games as a defenseman, for .38 ppg. Although certainly a small sample size, the PPG does rank highest among any Canes defenseman, and indicates an offensive ability that is desperately needed by the team. It also lines up nicely with his career minor league numbers (344 games, 110 pts, .32 ppg). That's just comparing offensive numbers.. defensively he showed us every reason to believe that he will be a top four defenseman quite soon, and good reason to hope for better results than that. The -4 P/M rating was quite respectable on a team whose starting defensemen had ratings of +4, -24, -27, -19, and -23.

Bruno turns 23 in August, and plays a position that will likely see a realignment towards youth after the new rules are decided during the upcoming lockout. Tanabe is gone, Markov is uncertain, Wesley is temporary (most likely), Hill is 33, Hedican is 32, Ward is 30.

As I said, based on team needs, the Bruno for Sami deal was pretty even.

From today's N&O article. Congrats to Bruno for getting his first non-two way contract. :)

The Canes have re-signed restricted free agent Bruno St. Jacques, who impressed in an 18-game audition with the Canes at the end of the season.

St. Jacques signed a one-year, $375,000 contract. He'll earn the same salary whether he plays in the NHL or AHL -- a bonus for a 22-year-old with 31 games of NHL experience.

"We got a long look at him at the end of the year last year and feel pretty confident he'll fit into our defense," Carolina assistant general manager Jason Karmanos said.

St. Jacques had two goals and five assists with the Canes after he was acquired in the Sami Kapanen trade with the Philadelphia Flyers in February.

Just a couple of thoughts here.......

1. I'm glad he's back, as a young player who has as much up side as he seems to have and is eager to learn is always a good thing.

2. I too understand the rationale for the 1 year deal, but I am the optomist and would have liked to have seen all our guys who re-signed this year to 1 year deals signed to longer deals because I see the CBA being done sooner than later and there being no lockout.

3. Bruno is young and eager to make the team and I hope he keeps that enthusiasm. You can look at our system over the last few years and see a few guys (y'all know who I mean) who appear to have had all the same markings as Bruno, but never panned out. Keep up the effort and he will be gold.

4. How long before our youngin's (like Bruno) start getting noticed for their potential by the collectibles companies? Malec, Bayda and Kurka are JUST getting some exposure, and while it may seem a bot soon to be asking this, but look at the history of our team in the card and collectibles market... and you see my point. We have quality young players who may one day be the elite in the league, and it's time the "experts" begin to look past the logo on their jerseys and see them for the players they are.

Just my 2¢.
