Hopefully those that want to remain unspoiled won't go into the other thread discussing the very need for them. lol.
USA up 5-2 early in the 3rd. Cole with a goal and assist. Grahame in goal. Unfortunately, he's allowed 2 goals on 10 shots.

Are you listening? watching?
I can't do either at work, but I was hoping to find a live scoreboard. Can't find one..... or ... at least, I can't devote anymore time to trying to find one. Is there such a thing anywhere?

The Americans celebrate one of their six goals against Reinhard Divis

By Andrew Podnieks
MYTISCHI--The 2007 edition of the IIHF World Championship kicked off with a matinee victory by the USA to the tune of 6-2 over Austria. The win in regulation time gave the Americans three important points in the Group B standings and ensures they control their own destiny to advance to the next round of play. The Austrians will now play the Czech Republic on Sunday with the meagre hope of not starting their first elite division appearance since 2005 with two straight losses.
Nineteen-year-old Phil Kessel got the ball rolling for the Americans less than two minutes from the opening faceoff, coming out from behind the Austrian net and firing a quick shot over the glove of Reinhard Divis for the early 1-0 lead. The Americans upped the lead midway through the first period when Toby Petersen mishandled a pass from Ryan Suter on a two-on-one, but the puck bounced off his skate and between Divis's legs anyway.
After producing little in the way of good shots over the course of two extended 5-on-3 situations, the Austrians got back into the game thanks to some nice work behind the American net by David Schuller. He displayed some fine dipsy-doodling, twisting and turning to avoid several checks and then coming out in front with the puck. He calmly passed across the crease where Raimund Divis redirected the puck into the open side past goalie John Grahame.
The USA pulled ahead by two goals again with a two-man advantage of their own, Erik Cole making a nice pass and Lee Stempniak one-timing the shot past a helpless Divis.
The USA upped the lead to 4-1 in the first minute of the second courtesy of Chris Clark, but midway through Oliver Setzinger beat Grahame with a bad-angle shot the goalie would have liked to have had back. The rest of the period was surprisingly evenly played, the Austrians playing a sound defensive game and the Americans unable to mount much of a sustained attack. Although shots were 35-10 for the Americans, most were long-range or relatively harmless.
Any remote chances of an Austrian comeback were squashed just 14 seconds into the final period when Brian Pothier sent Erik Cole in alone on Divis with a nice pass right up the middle of the fresh sheet of ice. Cole beat Divis to the stick side, and the 5-2 margin was too much for Austria to overcome. :D
Brandon Bochenski rounded out the USA's scoring midway through the period.
Here's another picture. Hopefully, this isn't one of the ones he let in!

The Carolina Hurricanes players representing Team U.S.A. in this year's International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championships got off to a fine start in their first tournament game in Russia.
Winger Erik Cole (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8467396) had a goal and an assist, defenseman Andrew Hutchinson (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8467927) added an assist and goaltender John Grahame (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8460715) had 14 saves for the American team, which easily defeated the underdog Austrian team 6-2 on Friday.
It was the second convincing win in as many games for Team U.S.A., which dispatched Sweden 6-3 in its lone exhibition game on Wednesday.
Cole stood out in a solid all-around team effort for the Americans, as he joined the St. Louis Blues' Lee Stempniak and the Colorado Avalanche's Paul Stasny as the only players to record more than one point. Cole's goal came on a breakaway only 14 seconds into the third period, when he used his trademark speed to split the Austrian defense before firing a shot over goaltender Reinhard Divis' shoulder.
That was the second such breakdown in as many periods for the Austrians, who also allowed Washington Capitals captain Chris Clark to score seven seconds in to the middle frame. Austria does not have any current NHL players on its roster.
Hutchinson, who played 41 games for the Hurricanes this season, assisted on Brandon Bochenski's goal in the third period. Hutchinson last represented the United States as a member of the national under-18 development program.
Grahame wasn't tested too often in goal against the Austrians, who are expected to be in a tough fight to avoid relegation from the 16-team "elite" division of international hockey. There may not have been much he could have done to stop the second Austrian goal, as a centering pass from a bad angle deflected off of an American defenseman and into the net.
Chad LaRose (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8469812) was also heard from, as he came ever so close to joining his teammates on the scoresheet in the second period. His slap shot from the right circle clanged off the post behind Divis, with the puck eventually landing perilously close to the goal line. Only a last-ditch clear from the Austrian defense prevented the puck from going in.
Team U.S.A. returns to action Sunday against Belarus, which, besides Austria, is the other relegation candidate from Group B. Hurricanes players Mike Commodore (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8467915), Eric Staal (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8470595), Cam Ward (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8470320) and Justin Williams (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8468508) will be in action for Team Canada on Saturday.

Team USA coasts to opening win
By Steve Keating / Reuters
MOSCOW -- The United States got goals from six different scorers to open the ice hockey world championships on Friday with a 6-2 thrashing of Austria.
Returning to the A Pool for the first time since 2005, Austria received a rude welcome back from the Americans, who were never really threatened.
They took a 3-1 first period lead on goals from Boston Bruins' Phil Kessel, Edmonton Oilers' Tobias Petersen and St Louis Blues' Lee Stempniak and then cruised to the easy win.
The U.S., chasing their first world championship title in 47 years, scored early in each period to keep the Austrians in a hole they could never climb out of.
"The U.S. team is very skilled and they got timely goals at the start of each period that always put us behind the eight ball," Austrian coach Jimmy Boni told reporters.
"I thought we tried the best we can but with the way the U.S. was playing it was very hard for us."
Washington Capitals Christopher Clark provided the U.S. with a three goal cushion when he tallied just 24 seconds into the second improving the U.S. lead to 4-1.
Carolina Hurricanes' Erik Cole added another 14 seconds into the final period to end any thoughts of an Austrian upset before the Bruins' Brandon Bochenski closed out the scoring with a powerplay marker.
Raimund Divis and Oliver Setzinge scored the Austrian goals. The victory sends the U.S. to the top of the Group B standings with the Czech Republic and Belarus schedules to meet later on Friday.
