Just checked the scoreboard.
Team Canada won their first game, 3-2 over Germany.
Staal scored one of the goals, with an assist from Justin! :D
Cam was not in goal.

MYTISCHI—Canada was made to work hard by the Germans on Saturday afternoon in a narrow 3-2 win for the prohibitive favorites. Clearly a work in progress, the Canadians nonetheless earned three valuable points in the Group C standings thanks to a tie-breaking goal by Jamal Mayers midway through the third period.
The game began with controversy. Just 1:19 from the opening faceoff, Canada's Shea Weber hit Yannic Seidenberg to the head with a shoulder coming through centre ice with his head down, but although there was no initial call by referee Jyri Petteri Ronn, the player was slow to get up, and then Weber was given a five-minute major and game misconduct. On the ensuing power play, though, it was Canada's Eric Staal who had the best chance, being stopped by Dimitrij Kotschnew in the German goal.
The Germans got on the board first thanks to a nice first and second effort by Christoph Ullmann. He drove to the net on his off wing, and Dwayne Roloson made a fine save but couldn't handle the rebound. Ullmann didn't give up on the play and stuck the puck in the open side at 9:51.
Playing patient hockey, Canada slowly worked itself into the game and tied the score late in the period when Cory Murphy made a great pass from the corner after chasing a loose puck down. He put it right on the stick of Jamal Mayers, just outside the crease, and Mayers had only to redirect the puck past Kotschnew to the far side.
Staal made up for his first-period miss early in the second when Barret Jackman found him alone in the slot. Staal faked a shot to draw Kotschnew out of position and then tucked the puck in the far side to put Canada up 2-1.
Less than a minute later, Robert Dietrich tied the game when Roloson whiffed on a long shot from near the center red line at 1:23. The goal settled the Germans down and had the Canadians reeling, and the rest of the period was evenly played with few scoring chances, just the way the Germans liked it. Ronn doled out his fair share of penalties in the middle period, eight in all, the most deserving to Michael Bakos for slashing Rick Nash when the Canadian scoring star was on a partial breakaway.
As the Canadians established a greater presence in the German end, though, they were thwarted by some fine goaltending from the Kazakhstan-born Kotschnew. The fate of the goalies changed in the deciding period, though, when Roloson made a fine save off Petr Fical on a 2-on-1 and then Kotschnew mishandled the puck behind his own net. Jason Chimera was right there and he tossed it out front to Jamal Mayers, who put the puck into the open net. The goal, at 11:42, restored Canada's one-goal lead and proved to be the winner.
The best line on the ice was the threesome of Rick Nash, captain Shane Doan, and teenage star Jonathan Toews. If they keep up their fine work, a suitable nickname will be needed--perhaps the 619 Line in honor of their sweater numbers (Nash is 61, Doan, 19, Toews 16).

MOSCOW (CP) - Mike Commodore made sure his first visit to Russia's most famous landmark was memorable.
The big defenceman had a couple of his Canadian teammates howling with laughter on Sunday when he purchased a traditional Russian hat near the entrance to Red Square and pulled it tightly over his curly mop of ginger hair.
The black fur cap was complete with a small hammer and sickle pin and Commodore posed proudly as complete strangers took pictures of him wearing it.
It was a light moment on a cold, grey afternoon as Team Canada took some time to tour the Russian capital.

That's called a "ushanka." There's your trivia injection for the day!!
I've been to Moscow. There are street vendors EVERYWHERE trying to sell those. He's got one of the cheap, mass-produced fake fur ones.
The real deals are usually mink and extremely expensive.
My husband had to buy one, too, while we were there. It screams TOURIST to me!!

I figured it was a major touristy thing to do. But it's funny to think Commie was the one Canadian that was willing to do it.
I do think it's funny that he had lots of people taking his photo. I guess a big redheaded N American wearing a "ushanka" (thanks CL!) is a sight! lol
Here's another article with quotes from our guys and a little more info:
MOSCOW -- Mike Commodore made sure his first visit to Russia's most famous landmark was memorable.
The big defenceman had a couple of his Canadian teammates howling with laughter yesterday when he purchased a traditional Russian hat near the entrance to Red Square and pulled it tightly over his curly mop of ginger hair.
The black fur cap was complete with a small hammer and sickle pin and Commodore posed proudly as complete strangers took pictures of him wearing it.
A LIGHT MOMENT
It was a light moment on a cold, grey afternoon as Team Canada took some time to tour the Russian capital.
"It's nice to get out and get around," said Commodore, who won the Stanley Cup with Carolina last June. "It gets tiring just sitting in the hotel all day. Guys want to get out and see things - you never know if you'll get back here.
"It's nice to walk around and experience things as a team."
Commodore is in Europe for the very first time and has been shocked by the size of sprawling Moscow, which has a population of roughly 11 million.
The chance to spend time in a foreign place is one of the benefits for those who join Canada at the IIHF world championship. The tournament lasts almost three weeks and the early games are often against weaker nations.
Canada plays Norway today (TSN, 10:15 a.m.).
A slow start to the event gives players the chance to ease in and have a little fun, something Commodore's teammates were clearly doing while he hammed it up.
"I know his style," said fellow Hurricanes player Justin Williams. "He's looking for a laugh all the time.
"He's probably a favourite in every dressing room he's ever played in."
The Canadians had a late morning practice at suburban Mytischi Arena before grabbing lunch downtown and visiting Red Square, where they walked past such landmarks as the Kremlin, Lenin's tomb and St. Basil's Cathedral.
The morning hadn't gone exactly as planned. Canadian defenceman Shea Weber was suspended three games by the IIHF after hitting Yannic Seidenberg with a hard inadvertent elbow in Canada's opening 3-2 win over Germany.
Weber was understandably disappointed with the ruling.
"He came a long way to play for Canada and wants to be in the lineup," said coach Andy Murray.
However, even Weber looked to be enjoying himself later in the day while walking through the heart of Moscow with his teammates.
Another happy player was goalie Cam Ward, who like Commodore is visiting Europe for the first time. Last year's Conn Smythe winner was a notable late cut at two world junior training camps and will get his first start for Canada today.
"I'm ready to go," Ward said. "I've been waiting for this chance and looking forward to it."
He'll go home with at least one souvenir as Team Canada gathered for a group photo in front of the famous multi-coloured spires of St. Basil's.
WORLD JUNIOR
Mike Cammalleri, Dan Hamhuis, Nick Schultz and Barret Jackman have already been part of a similar shot. They were members of the Canadian world junior team in 2001 and did some sightseeing during that tournament in Moscow.
"This is the first time Russia has felt familiar again," said Cammalleri, pointing in the direction of the hotel where the junior team had stayed. "I remember all of this area as clearly as if I was here recently.
"It's been six years but it's still fresh in my mind."
Teenager Jordan Staal carried a camera and took some pictures yesterday afternoon just in case his memory isn't as good. The 18-year-old had earlier skated in the same colour practice jersey as Shane Doan and Rick Nash - an indication he'll see more ice time against Norway.

Actually it's now 3-2 Canada- with the troika of Nash, Doan & Toews tearing it up out there; and right on cue for the fretting E- it's now 4-2 with JWill getting the PP goal ;) could be a Staal goal as they're debating it right now, but Canes had a hand in it. :)
So 4-2 Canada at the 10:23 mark.....

Final score Canada 4 Norway 2- Goal scorers for Canada- Chimera, Doan, Nash, JWill;
Cam looked sharp in net; the debate was on at the end if Chris Mason would get the nod vs Slovakia in a couple days...
Lots of Canadians in Moscow- cheering, dancing and shirtless with C-A-N-A-D-A spelled out on several young mens chests. Getting into the spirit, eh?
Rick Nash got the player of the game for Canada- and Pal Grotnes the goalies for Norway rec'd the award for his team. The awards were presented by V. Tretiak; Ya'll remember he was sitting with Bettman here in Raleigh at game 7. ;) He's Minister of Sport.
Canada looked good after they started to shake the cobwebs off; Looks like Murray is auditioning JStaal, Matthew Lombardi and J. Towes on the Doan/Nash line. Fun game....

Yannic is Dennis' baby brother.
Is there a reason that Dennis isn't on the Germany squad? Surely on a team with 0 NHL defensemen he'd at least pique the interest of Mr. Krupp? At first glance it appears that Germany has 0 NHL players on the entire roster, though, so maybe it's a country-specific decision not to use NHL players? Obviously Hecht and Sturm are a bit busy right now but...

Canada is up 5-4 on the Slovaks in a VERY wild game. Roloson is in net for Team Canada and Jaroslav Halak from the Canadiens is playing for Slovakia. Cam is backing up Roloson- I thought they'd get Mason in there but not yet.
Rick Nash is playing well in this tourney- 3 points today; they've got a kid line of Colby Armstrong/JStaal/JToews playing really well together and creating- Murray has been switching Toews up to play with Nash & Doan. JWill/EStaal/Camelleri have created chances lots of crazy chances but not on the score sheet yet. Willy is very fiesty in this game, lol.
Hossa scored a nice one on Roloson.
Winding down with about 3 minutes to go......

Team Canada worked out their issues and get the win- 6-3 over Belarus; good for Shane Doan for rising to the challenge after all this garbage from his own government about something that allegedly happened 2 years ago; Here's the write up- from one of the IIHF correspondents in Moscow. I hate that I missed the game- the Belarussians were chanting my favorite all time chant- "SHAIBU, SHAIBU" which I first heard when I attended the World Cup preliminaries in Columbus- and attempted to get a translation from the fun Russian kids sitting behind us at USA v Russia game. Something about "the puck" lol.
Oh, and calling the Chicago Blackhawks- ya'll need to find a way to get young Jonathan Toews outta North Dakota, the kid is ready to play now and seems to be enjoying playing with another kid, JStaal ......
O Captain, My Captain: Doan leads Canada past Belarus

By Lucas Aykroyd
KHODYNKA--Canadian captain Shane Doan's actions spoke louder than words on Friday afternoon in Moscow, as he led his team to a 6-3 win over Belarus with a natural hat trick in a span of 6:35 in the second period. His goals came shorthanded, on the power play, and at even strength. The win leaves Canada atop Group F with nine points.
"It was a game we needed to win," Doan said.
"It shows you the level of professional [Doan] is, by shelving everything that was going on and going out and leading us by example tonight," said Canadian forward Mike Cammalleri, alluding to the recent controversy in the Canadian Parliament about Doan's appointment as team captain. "We have a live feed of the Canadian media at our hotel, so we've been aware of what's going on."
"He's one of those guys who comes through when there's pressure and criticism," said Jonathan Toews. "He's proved that he's a real leader in our locker room."
"That's what a captain's supposed to do," said Head Coach Andy Murray.
Belarus, which has never beaten Canada at the Worlds, remains pointless in last place in the Qualifying Round group.
Canada got off to a shaky start but asserted its dominance over time, outshooting Belarus 40-21.
Toews and Matthew Lombardi added a goal and an assist apiece, Cammalleri scored once, and Rick Nash had a pair of helpers.
Nash did not play in the third period due to the stomach flu, but said afterwards that he was feeling better.
For Belarus, Dmitry Meleshko scored a goal and an assist, Aleksei Ugarov and Aleksandr Ryadinsky chipped in singles, and Oleg Antonenko had two assists.
Cam Ward made 18 saves in goal for Canada, while Stepan Goryachevskikh, appearing in his first-ever World Championship game for Belarus, recorded 34 saves.
Next up for Canada is the Czech Republic on May 6, while Belarus faces Slovakia that day.
Canada established an early edge in shots on goal, but faced the game's first real adversity when Belarus got an extended two-man advantage. The Belarusians capitalized, opening the scoring at 8:43 when Aleksei Ugarov picked up the rebound from Oleg Antonenko's center point shot and barely snuck it in past Ward's outstretched right leg. The goal was video-reviewed and deemed good.
During a mid-period Canadian power play, Toews put a close-in shot off Goryachevskikh's left post, and the Belarusian goalie foiled Nash several times from in tight. Next, Antonenko attempted to give Belarus a two-goal lead with a quick wrister from near the hash marks, but Ward picked it off with his glove.
Shortly after the one-minute mark of the second period, Jason Chimera broke in off the left side and got a breakaway, but Goryachevskikh pokechecked him before he could get off a shot, and the Canadian forward took a slashing penalty after the whistle. However, Canada tied the game while shorthanded, as Nash burst down right wing to grab a loose puck in the neutral zone and fed Doan perfectly for a 2-on-1 one-timer at 2:38.
"That first goal set the tone in a lot of different ways," said Lombardi.
At 5:15, Canada went up 2-1 on the power play when Toews charged off the goal line and tried to wrap the puck past Goryachevskikh, who stopped it with his goal stick handle but couldn't stop Doan from collecting the puck and roofing it into the open side.
It was 3-1 Canada at 8:32 when Toews went hard to the net to tip in the final pass on a give-and-go play off the rush with his linemates Chimera and Jordan Staal.
Just 41 seconds later, the Canadians took a four-goal lead when Matthew Lombardi circled the net and centered the puck to Doan for an easy tap-in from the crease, completing the Canadian captain's hat trick.
With 3:40 left in the middle frame, Mike Cammalleri made it 5-1 Canada with a cheeky backhand tip of Dion Phaneuf's shot from the blueline. Ward put on a brief goaltending clinic as Belarus peppered him with shots during a late-period power play, which included another 5-on-3 sequence.
Halfway through the third period, Belarus cut the deficit to 5-2 when Aleksandr Ryadinsky's shot from inside the blueline beat Ward along the ice through traffic with the teams playing 4-on-4.
Lombardi restored Canada's four-goal edge with 3:15 left, tipping (with his hip) Mike Commodore's shot from the line past a startled Goryachevskikh. Belarus made it 6-3 at 18:54 on the power play when Dmitry Meleshko walked in from the bottom of the faceoff circle to Ward's right and zinged a wrister high glove side, but no miracle comeback was in store.
A handful of happy Canadian supporters attended, including some family members and friends of the team, while Belarus fans enlivened the proceedings with chants of "Shaibu!"
"The guys have been incredible, and Hockey Canada has been incredible," Doan said. "I've gotten calls from people back home, and they've been so phenomenally supportive. It's fun to come over here and compete and try to win, and that's what you focus on."

Shaibu (in Cyrillic: шайбa/шайбy* ) is the Russian word for puck. When used as a cheer, it means "put the puck in the net". It's a contextual thing.

Hmm, somehow lost a post.
Staal's the hero today!
Eric Staal scored at 0:23 of overtime to give Canada a dramatic 4-3 win over the Czech Republic at Mytischi on May 6. The overtime result means that the Czechs advance to the quarter-finals, avoiding the ignominy of recording their worst result since 1930.
And CL - I love your little blurbs/updates. I haven't been able to listen or watch and barely keep up with the score (new job and traveling will do that). I really like seeing your (and others) comments. So thanks! :D

WOOOO ! I just watched the replay of the game and the goals by Staaly were FANtastic!
E- the Baby Bird celebrated that first goal with Baby Bro #10 Jordan; totally cool-(Andy Murray is playing the brothers together.) Eric completely had Checmanek beat on it and Camalleri made a sweet pass in to Eric who was all by himself.
The end in OT was crazy- The Czech coach took Checmanek out for some other dude- and 23 seconds in and basically the first shot - Staalsy scores- a real great play to end it. You'd think with 2 goals he would have gotten the Canadian player of the game plaque thingy they give out- but they gave it to Jay McClement.
So the matchup tommorow afternoon is USA v Canada- we'll have 8 of our boys playing for both USA & Canada, and it could be a Crackers v Cam showdown.:eek2:
Shaibu (in Cyrillic: шайбa/шайбy* ) is the Russian word for puck. When used as a cheer, it means "put the puck in the net". It's a contextual thing.
Oh SS- I knew I could count on you! I spent over a period plus part of an intermission trying to understand the Russian kids next to us in Columbus who I now realize were trying to tell me that is what Shaibu meant when they were cheering. I knew it was "puck" but the one kid seemed to want to tell me more, but just couldn't quite get it out, so a tap on my shoulder had to suffice for trying to understand him. ;)

Is it really USA vs Canada already?
Luke must be getting bad info, lol.
The Canadians play the Czechs on Sunday. Cam Ward has appeared in two games for Canada, both wins, allowing five goals on 44 shots, while Eric Staal and Justin Williams each have two points in four games. Mike Commodore has one assist in four games. Staal is 10th in the tournament in faceoff percentage at 59.2 percent.
A win over Canada might move the Americans past the Canadians for first place in the group, setting up a quarterfinal matchup with Switzerland instead of the Russians, Swedes or Finns.
Nevermind. USA/CAN is just the last game of the qualifying rounds. They've already got a spot in the quarters. Cool.
