CHeck this out. Yesterday I was signing up for new Car Insurance. I answered all of the questions, and then got a quote. The lady ran my driving record, and said that she could not give me full coverage until I took care of my suspended license. I said "what!". She said it was suspended September 15th 2002 for failure to appear in Wake County Court. The thing is that I did not know about any court date. Here is what happened.
I had an expired inspection sticker in May 2002. I went to court in June 2002 and showed the DA that I had gotten it taken care of, so the charges were dropped. She apparently forgot to record that in the records. I got a new court date that I actually never received from anyone, and missed it. My license was then suspended. After talking to the DA's office on the phone yesterday, they found their mistake and the fees, and the suspension was overturned. The DA told me, it will take up to a week to go through the system, so I can not drive. If I drive and get caught, I will end up downtown, since it has been 10 months since my license was suspended, even though I did not know. I can not make it to work in Apex at the YMCA now in the mornings, since I can't drive. Luckily, I can walk to my Full Time job off of Harrison Avenue. Someone should pay for that.
This is the second time something like this has happened. A few years ago, I was supeoned to court for some court case I can not remember now. Anyway, it said go to the Apex Courthouse on Friday. I went in there and did not see my name anywhere on the list. I talked to the clerk there and no one could find me. After about 1 hour they told me to call Wake County Clerk of courts. The clerk told me the case had been moved out of Apex and to Wake County court. I told her I would not make it there in time. She told me that there would be a new court date, and I would get a new supeona. About 3 weeks later, on a Sunday morning a Cary Police officer showed up at my door. She asked for me, and I went to the door. She said she had an arrest warrant for me for failure to appear. I explained to her what happened, and she said would not take me in, but I had to go to the Cary Police station by 7:00 Monday night to see the magistate. I went and told him what happened, and he said that there is no court house in Apex and that I was making it up. I went to my car to find my original suponea, but I could not. I told him it said court is held the fourth Friday of every month in Apex. He still did not believe me. I ended up getting a new suponea, and when I went to the case, all charges were dropped against the person. That cost me about 2 days of work.
The third thing happened about 3 years ago too, but this brought back memories.
When I switched jobs, I had to get a criminal records check. I went down to the courts, and paid my 10 dollars. I got my records check and started reading it. It had a probation violation on it. That was weird since I have never been arrested in my life. I talked to someone about it, and he typed a note on the report that said it was a mistake so I could show them at work. I asked him why he could just not delete it from my file, and he said it could never be done. I still do not know why it can't be taken off, but I need to get that taken care of. If someone goes to 123nc.com or something and runs my name, I wonder if it will show up.
I am just wondering how many other people have things on their records that they do not know about.? I am thinking about talking to WRAL 5 on your side to make people aware that these things happen, and people should check out their files.
O.K. that was long! :D
