Is today the deadline? I know JR said that there a great #of them who were safe, but with all the bomb's that have been dropped in the past, I never let me guard down. Has anyone heard of any recent signings?

Do you think JR is waiting to make sure all RFA are safe before aggressivley persuing any other deals, eg. Tevrdovsky(sp) in place of Markov, etc.
Any news leaks on Markov?

I've been out of town a LOT lately.....have I missed us signing Cole?

Last I knew, Erik hadn't signed yet. I did hear that a letter of intent (of something of that nature) was signed, but am not sure of the details. I do know that he was at a hockey camp at Clarkson last week enjoying the short New York State summer. It's going fast.

I will be scared to check nhl.com or the Canes website until AFTER midnight...JR has a way of being sneaky sometimes...
I hope all our guys will stay put and we can sign Markov and get this show on the road!!

Jeff O Rocks, I agree. Remember what he did just before the trade deadline this spring. Although I had my suspicions that Bates would get traded after Sammi, I somehow had some sense of (false) security when nothing happened for so long. We know how that turned out.

Losing Cole would be a Huge disaster. I would be devastated. I really don't think JR is that dumb though (go ahead and flame me now for that one ;)). Crap, I forgot to check out 850 on the drive home.. did they have a special front office access or anything?

I would be extremely depressed if we do not sign Cole. He is the one guy I hope gets at least a three-year deal. I think it would be worth it even if there is a lockout.

I too would like Cole sign a multi-year contract, but do not think that will happen. Like many players in the previous weeks, I think he'll be signing a one year contract. I would love to see something in writing to see that he has been signed, sealed, and delivered.

I really think JR may try to sign Cole to a two or three year deal, but most players in Cole's category (up and coming with bigger money potential) probably don't want to sign long term and see what comes out of the CBA in '04.
I think our season tickets are going to be extremely cheap in '04, unfortunately.

Actually isn't the deadline the 15th?
So we have untill midnight tonight! But unless some bad stuff is going on I'm sure signing Cole and some of the others is just a matter of putting the name on the paper.
If not I might start pulling for the Avs, or Rangers next season :D

No, it is just annoying. The Markov article had this at the bottom:
Restricted free agents Erik Cole, Josef Vasicek, Jeff Heerema and Jaroslav Svoboda remain unsigned, although none has arbitration rights.

These guys only have two options, sign or hold out. The power in the equation lies with the GM. If a player holds out it's a PR nightmare for the player 'cause he comes off looking greedy. JR can pretty much offer whatever he wants as long as its a qualifying offer. Sigh, I really want all those guys to be at training camp happy to be back and not annoyed at management.

so, the deadline WAS last night at midnight...not tonight, correct? *confused*
as for not signing yet, what would be the reasoning behind the delay? is that usually a sign that they're going to hold out for more $ or what? should we be concerned?

Seriously, I hope Coley gets inked ASAP. Next year is coming up quick!

NO the deadline is tonight at midnight. According to the markov article, it is dated the 15th, and says the deadline is tonight.

Tonight at midnight is the 16th. All other dates such as free agency (July 1) seem to start the second it turns to that date. None of the articles on free agency make a big deal about the July 15th deadline though, as it is mainly the deadline to file for arbitration for a Restricted Group II free agent as the guys in question are, but none of them are eligible for arbitration. A team can submit an offer sheet for any of those guys but the cost would be high.

Me three. I know when midnight came around last night, I was thinking "Ohhhh boy...". But then found out here this morning that we have today, still not a lot of time for comfort. IMHO, we definitely don't need Markov as much as we need Cole...

I don't have any doubt they will sign Cole, but he's not eligible for arbitration yet, right? I think JR intends for Cole to be a big part of this team for a long time. I just hope that's what Erik wants.

I think Erik would be very happy to continue being a Hurricane. Not only for "hockey" reasons, but also to enjoy his new house and some family in the area.
Still waiting to see something on ch.com about this though.
