Duplin Wines Named Official Wines of Carolina Hurricanes
08-08-2007
RALEIGH NC – Duplin Winery, the oldest and largest winery in the Southeast, has been named the official wine of the Carolina Hurricanes, the National Hockey League team based in Raleigh. The winery, which is located in Rose Hill in Duplin County, North Carolina, offers a variety of wines varying in sweetness, from a dry white Carlos to sweet Scuppernongs. Duplin Winery is also home to North Carolina’s best selling wine – Hatteras Red.
“We are honored to partner with The Carolina Hurricanes hockey club,” said Jonathan Fussell, President of Retail Sales for Duplin Winery. “Many visitors to the Winery and members of our wine club love the Hurricanes, and we look forward to introducing our award-winning products to other Canes fans.”
Duplin will introduce a special Hurricanes Limited Edition Red Wine early this fall. The wine will be available for purchase in the Duplin Winery retail room, the Duplin Winery website (www.duplinwinery.com) , the Hurricanes website (www.carolinahurricanes.com), inside the RBC Center, and in all supermarkets and grocery stores carrying Duplin wines.

My wife loves Duplin wines.
I personally think they're way too sweet, although we'll probably try this one.
Actually, we're not the first--the Sabres actually have Bully Hill Winery as a sponsor, although the Sabres do have another official whine, "Injuries".

I'm always tickled at the "official" sponsors. We have an official exterminator too don't we?
And a little OT, but in the plethora of discussion about the N'ville corporate support, I always presumed it was more than just corporations buying tickets, but the partnerships that were forged in the form of advertising and mutual promotion.

Yeah, there is a lot more to it, like the Lexus Champion's Club and the St. Lawrence Homes Deck, etc. And yes, Termidor is our official exterminator. So we don't have vermin problems like at Angels Stadium.
On the Canes website, it lists the Crabtree Marriott Courtyard as the "Hotel Partner". Most, if not all, visiting teams stay at the Embassy Suites on Harrison in Cary. Not only not the partner hotel, but owned by Hilton, too. There is also a fairly extensive list of "Corporate Partners" with links to their websites.
I'm not sure I've ever tasted a Duplin wine that I wanted to buy. They're all too sweet to me, even the wines they say are dry.

I actually wanted to buy the Relentless wine during the cup run after finding out about it but the only store to carry it in Florida was about 1.5 hours away and I wasn't driving that far for it. Plus it was around $65 a bottle.

Yeah Duplin makes some pure sugar water it seems. Some of them are drinkable, some are more Boone's Farmish. I'll try some Hurricanes wine just to do it though.
Duplin had a segement on some Food Network show. I'd love to go tour their Winery and try some of their higher end wines.

I still have my Carolina Hurricanes bottle of wine that was bottled after the 2001-2002 season (and sold/used at the wine tasting the following year i believe).
I got it at the 2004 STH draft party the afternoon of the first day of the draft. It's signed by CWard, Staal, and Ladd as the last 3 first round picks of the Canes. :D Pretty cool. Ward and Ladd's sigs don't have #s with them as neither had signed a contract at that point.
I always said I'd open it if we won the Cup, and even brought it the night of Game 7 -- but decided against it.
I don't collect much of anything (most of my lithos and posters are just rolled up in a rubber band collecting dust), but I love this particular item.

Still searching for that perfect apartment.

We have a bottle as well. It's signed by the team that went to the Finals in 2002. I think we won it at some charity hockey game at the RBC....cops vs firemen maybe? I forget.
I'll never open it because I hate red wine, lol.

Duplin wines are known especially for muscadine wines and grapes and the grape seed extracts they sell to fight cancer. Many locals swear by taking the muscadine grape seeds, crushed up and put in capsules, to fight cancer. I take care of some of the grape farmers since my town is a few minutes away from the winery. Can't wait to get a case of canes wine to give away.

I'm not crazy about Duplin's regular wines, but their blackberry wine is delish. I guess that's because it's supposed to be sweet.

It's nice for the corporate sponsorship, but at every game it never failed if Linda Craft didn't wear dead animal (leather pants or leather jacket) or try and dress like an animal-- zebra print, leopard print or cow print (think black and white animals). Only thing missing was a Cruelle DeVille dalmatian ensemble.

My favorite wine description story: we were at a wine tasting at Il Palio, and were going through the line with the whites. A couple of really delicious Italian varietals, and a highly rated Sauvignon Blanc that all the wine snobs were raving about. Well, we just couldn't get into it but were ashamed to say anything because it was obviously the cool thing to like.
So the sommelier came around and asked us which ones we liked, we told him, and he asked excitedly, "Did you try the Sauvignon?" We said yes, kind of noncommittally, hoping he would drop it. But no. "So, what did you think?" Now, I had tasted a few more by then so was a little less inhibited, and I told him it had a lot of character, but I couldn't get past the smell. He nodded knowingly and said, "The cat p*ss smell? Yes, we call that 'gooseberry'."

I like champagne with Chambord -- I imagine the taste is somewhat similar.
He nodded knowingly and said, "The cat p*ss smell? Yes, we call that 'gooseberry'."
Hmm. There were gooseberry bushes (shrubs? trees?) at Mom and Dad's house and Mom would make Dad a gooseberry cobbler every year. I just remember them being twist-your-face-off tart, but no cat p*ss smell and I know there's not a chance in hell Dad would have eaten it if it did. Nothing makes him gag faster than the smell of cat pee.
Btw, speaking of wines, the husband of one of the attorneys I worked for (she's still there, just in a different department) opened a winery near Siler City a couple of years ago. http://www.horizoncellars.com/ Don't let the fact that Guy looks like an older Ryan Miller and is from Buffalo turn you off! =.)

There are signs on I-40 for the exit. I don't remember the exit number. It's a little more than half way to Wilmington.
I do know, that coming from Raleigh, you make a right off the exit, take that road down to the first light, make a right, and the winery will be on your left.
Unfortunately, the town it's in looks pretty depressed.

Greetings from Carolina Beach! (yes-- arrived today for a week's stay)
Since we were passing right by it, we decided to stop at the Duplin Winery and take the tour and sit for some tastings. It's a great place to visit.
"Bill" greeted us for a tour. He saw our 'Canes license plate, and said, "I bet you're here to try "Ten," aren't you?" We said that we were, but we really wanted to tour the winery, too, and taste their other wines, too.
Tour was really very interesting, and it's harvest season, so we were right there when a truckload of freshly picked grapes arrived. We watched as they were dumped into the hopper for pressing.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, Duplin's wines are made with the muscadine grapes, and they also use catawba and scuppernong grapes, too. These, by nature, produce sweeter wines, but I was pleasantly surprised to find they weren't sugary sweet like a dessert wine. If you like Riesling, they really aren't much past that as far as sweetness goes. I myself do like pinots and chards, but I do enjoy Rieslings when it's hot outside.
In the tasting room, they have a regular menu of 10 different wines you can taste. They're all pretty light, but I did discover that I definitely preferred the muscadines and blends over the scuppernong wines. The scuppernong wines are definitely a bit too sweet for me. "Ten," since it's a new limited edition, isn't on their regular tasting menu-- you have to ask for it, but they're glad to give you a taste.
"Ten" has a medium blush color and silky smooth finish-- pretty light, but not too sweet. It's made from a blend of muscadines and something else (which I can't remember). It's really very drinkeable. I was pleasantly surprised.
Their wines are very young, though. They don't age them in barrels, or anything. You either need to buy a bottle as a conversation piece to keep, or drink it immediately. If you opened that bottle in a year, it'd probably be pretty crappy-- they're not meant to be aged. Two other kinds I liked were "Carlos," which is white and seemed very Riesling-ish-- and then "Bald Head Red," which included in its blend a grape variety from New York.
Bill said they sold 80 cases of "Ten" at the Caniac Carnival, which really exceeded their expectations. They hope it does well for them. They're a family-owned and operated business, so it felt good to give them some of our business.
It was a nice side-trip on our way down. I highly recommend it. We had lunch in their restaurant, The Bistro, while we were stopped, and the food was good. Really big gift shop/wine store, too, and "Ten" is prominently displayed right when you walk in the door.
Guess that's it--- walked out with a few bottles and hit the the road to the beach.
Oh.... and my husband only sipped a little of each wine during the tasting, 'cause he was pacing himself. But not me!! I finished every pour in my glass--- so..... I actually got a bit buzzed, and he was annoyed 'cause it was my turn to drive, but he had too!!

The prize is a bottle of Magnolia, a bottle of Hatteras Red, and an extra-large bottle of Ten signed by the entire team!
Woot! :toocool:

Congrats. But that just means I didn't win :(
Oh well glad to see someone from the board win.

heck yeah, congrats Wade. Apparently the luck of 328 is starting to be shared, rather than horded by the Spencer.

You could always pass it around with the board. I mean they do pass the Cup around. ;) ;)

For anyone in the Charlotte/Rock Hill area, do they have 'Ten' available at the HP's down there? We are heading to RH to spend Christmas with my parents and would be great to pick up some. I just have to pack it in a TON of bubble wrap to put in my suitcase to go back to Oregon.

My wife found it in Food Lion of all places here in Charlotte. They'd likely have it at the Total Wine as well, there's one in the Park Road Shopping Center.

I know the price has been reduced on it too...noticed that at the HT when I got my 12 bottles w/the 15% disc :D

Which brings me to my next question... is it any good? I'm thinking to get 2 bottles- one for Christmas dinner and one to take home to put on the shelf.

CHC- At the Apex HT they've marked it up to $10.99; we were about to buy a case of it for hub's nephew up in Pittsburgh who absolutely loves the stuff, with that 15% discount but noticed they we $10.99 not $9.99 like they were when we bought them originally, so that 15% discount is negated with the higher price. Or maybe the Apex HT is trying to get over?

SoCal, The Harris Teeter on Edwards Mill/Duraleigh is selling it for $7.99. Of course, today was the last day for the 15% off on cases.
Caniac369, its not bad, but it is sweet and IMO, should not be eaten with or after a meal but, before or just to chill.

caniac369,
For Charlotte, I found some at the Harris Teeter in Cotswold. It took a while for it to get there, but it should be there now.
I tried some a few nights ago. It's not bad. It's not exactly good wine, either. There's just not a lot to it, but that doesn't mean it's bad to drink.

I'm with CHC-- it's not the best thing to actually drink with a meal. I have an empty bottle, I could dump some Cranapple juice in it and mail it to you--that's about what it tastes like. Seriously!
