Didn't Canesvision/Gale Force Media/Whatever used to do all the ads?

From Staff Reports
RALEIGH - Communications firm Genesis Marketing Partners won the Carolina Hurricanes' advertising and public relations account. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Genesis, a Cary-based firm with 15 employees, will be crafting an ad and marketing campaign for the professional hockey team's coming season.

Genesis' other sports clients include five Division I NCAA universities and the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic.

Well let's hope they get their money's worth (unless they paid them in pucks and free hot dogs).

Holy crap, they finally are trying something new with marketing & PR?!?!

Shocking.
Can't be any worse (but please don't take that as a challenge Canes!!)

Can't be any worse

Well it is a local, Cary firm of 15 employees. It's not like they went full out New York marketing firm. We'll see.
For all we know, it's a company started up by former CanesVision employees.

Well they're web savvy. ;)

ETA: To be fair, I need to give them a chance. It's just that the marketing side of the Canes has been so horrid over the years that I'm just highly skeptical.

Right, they've been so horrid over the years that they're Finally trying to do something differently. That in itself should be cause to be at least a little glad.

10th season, wow, doesn't seem that long ago that we were inaugurating the ESA.

oh yeah, the 10th season in the Hurricanes existence. For some reason immediately went to "years in the building", not years in the state. :)
Thanks for pointing it out. I don't have the ability to hit the normal vices at work that usually help keep me sane.
Damn work.

I'll defend you, Guy! You said "season"--not years in the building. I knew what you meant!

So... Toast.... take this: :p (yeah!! That'll please Guy, 'cause once he told me I talk smack like an old lady! )

And... it's actually been delayed a year, becuase of the poopy lock-out. This season should really be the beginning of the 11th.

Yeah...? And I talk smack like an older lady! So don't you come over here and --

... what were we talking about?

And... it's actually been delayed a year, because of the poopy lock-out. This season should really be the beginning of the 11th.

And if you count the 742-game road trip with which we started our Raleigh-based inaugural season, and factor in the 2 leap years (2000 and 2004), then the Canes have really only been here... about a week and a half.

Quiz: what is the name of the day that is tacked on (ie, Feb 29) every fourth year? A: Bissextile (I sh** you not).

"increasing day" is the legal phrase, see North Carolina General Statutes, derived from an act of Henry III:
http://www.ncleg.net/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/bysection/chapter_12/gs_12-3.html
"(4) Leap Year, How Counted. – In every leap year the increasing day and the day before, in all legal proceedings, shall be counted as one day."

48 21 H. 3 (Act of Parliament during the reign of Henry III):
Ordained, That, to take away
from henceforth all Doubt and
Ambiguity, that might arise
hereupon, the Day increasing
in the Leap-Year shall be ac-
counted for one Year, so that
because of that Day none shall
be prejudiced that is implead-
ed, but it shall be taken and
reckoned of the same month
37* wherein it groweth; and
that Day. and the Day next go-
ing before, shall be accounted
for one Day. And therefore we
do command you, that from
henceforth you do cause this
to lie published afore you, and
be observed. Witness myself
at Westminster, &c.

tate anni predicti, & compute-

hoc coram vobis publicari, &
de cetero faciatis observari.
Teste me ipso apud Westm.
&c. Anno regni regis H.
quadragesimo quarto.

Brae. 359.
The Bissextile is the day added every fourth year to the month of Feb-
ruary in order to make the year agree with the course of the earth round
the sun. In the Roman Calendar it was fixed on the sixth day before the
calends of March, and this day was counted twice. The first was called
bissextus prior and the second bissextus posterior, the latter, however, be-
ing properly called the bissextile day. This import of the word is now ob-
solete, for we intercalate the 29th day of February every fourth year
which is called leap-year, but the term is still retained.
The astronomical year or period of the earth's revolution around the sun
is composed of 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes and a fraction. The civil year
consists commonly of 365 days. But, as just observed, every fourth year
we intercalate the 29th day of February, though for greater accuracy -we
make only one leap-year out of every fourth centenary year; thus the
years 1700 and 1800 were not leap-years nor will 1900 be a leap-year, but
the year 2000 will be a leap-year. These leap-years therefore consist prop-
erly of 366? days. By this statute however the increasing day in the leap-
year together with the preceding day shall be accounted for one day only,
and the year thus becomes in law a determinate period of 365 days.

sooo, this article is about the blues marketing... but read the bolded part...

what a friggen rip-off

By Frank Cusumano
NewsChannel 5 Sports

(KSDK) - Members of the St. Louis Blues were shooting commercials on Wednesday at a Creve Coeur, Mo., home.

There were scenes one doesn't often see -- Doug Weight bearing flowers, Barret Jackman playing guitar and David Backes getting makeup.

The 10-hour shoot was held at the home of Mike and Lenwood Anthon. Ten production people were on hand and three cameras were in use.

But the mission was quite simple.

St. Louis Blues Sponsorship Services Manager Lisa Kampeter said "our campaign is whatever it takes."

"What we are doing is basically showing up at this household and we are wooing them back. We are saying, 'Hey we'll do it whatever it take for you guys to come out and see a game this season,''' Kampeter said.

So players put on makeup, read cue cards and acted up a storm.

"You have to do what you have to do to make the big show," said defenseman Bryce Salvador.

Well - I guess we can be comforted in the fact that they are doing 'whatever it takes' to woo fans back, not to do Whatever It Takes to win the Cup. ;)

How embarrassing! Poor Dougie. :)

Hmm...Whatever it takes...back in the day, the Hurricanes org ran a special buy one get one free season ticket campaign with some of the local companies, mine included.

For every discounted seat in specific sections bought, my company paid for a second seat. Ahhh...the good old days. That got butts in the seats though and helped build a fanbase. Maybe the Blues should think about that.

Just heard on XM the 39 Hour Special commercial that they are playing in St Louis.

An amazing deal (wonder how many STHs they piss off) to get LL seats for $999 per seat for the whole season. Only 250 seats available. A Doug Weight signed stick with every purchase too. The deal is available for 39 hours.

That's a sweet deal - wonder if they are letting STHs move to these seats. I can't imagine they are - if they did, they'd end up LOSING money. That's less than I pay for my UL seat.

Guyute
08-29-2007, 09:26 AM
Can you imagine the people that paid way more than that for worse seats? I'd possibly even be pissed enough to write my account off.

I know these clubs want to try and draw in non-STHs... but, you just CAN'T do that to your STH's who've been supporting you for God-knows-how-long.
Man. I'd be p.i.s.s.e.d.

The Blues need WAY more than a slogan to fill their building. At least they're trying. Maybe that should be the slogan.

If they start wearing Relentless wristbands, we all need to go there and kick some @$$.

Since Doug Weight already has his name on the Cup, I'll bet he dosen't give a crap what ads St. Louis runs, as long as they keep the paychecks flowing.

Aren't the Blues the oldest active NHL franchise never to have won the Cup?

Guyute

Yes and No. They are, but they share that with the LA Kings. Both franchises started in 67-68 and have never won a Cup. (39 seasons)

I don't know. Name on the Cup or not, Weight strikes me as the type that would like nothing more than to a) bring the Cup to a long-suffering city like St Louis and b) leave that franchise in better shape than when he arrived. He's just one of those rare guys, IMO.

puck_it

yeah, dunno where the paycheck comment came from. he's never given off a vibe that he's doing anything but being the guy who only cares about the money. through quotes in the paper and interviews and the like, its apparant he loes the game, loves his fans, loves the Cup, and does anything for his team. I think you hit the nail on the head, SHC. He's a rare type of guy, and fortunately for us, most of those kinds of guys are hurricanes :D
