No way? It took them 16 years of video review to figure this out?

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/flyers/20070824_NHL_verdict_goes_against_goal_judges.html

When the NHL instituted video replay in the 1991-92 season, the idea was to help the referees determine whether a goal had been scored.

Few probably considered that it might make goal judges all but obsolete. Yet improvements in technology have achieved just that.

I know atleast one goalie won't be dissapointed

i dont like it. if the red light goes off its an automatic goal review.. There was a situation in st louis where the video guy didnt buzz in time to stop the game for a review... now, the goal judge also missed it, but what i'm getting at is, the video isnt infallible. at the RBC they dont interfere, they sit in the zam area and the aisle. so, i'm guessing they'll stay.

I've read a little about this recently, but haven't clicked on these new links. Can someone just answer these questions because frankly it confuses me.

Are they still going to have SOMEONE semi-official to light the red light? I think it's a mistake to move them. I realize that "officially" they offer little in the goal/no-goal, but I think it's unfair for the fans that are present at the game to not have the light light up as soon as it goes in. In some seating (particulalry down very low) you don't always see it go in -- at least you can rely on the light being close to immediate.

Sounds like they are moving them somewhere to look at a monitor or somthing and they will still be there somewhere to activate the light.

Thanks.

I find that inferior to the guy that's sitting behind the goal. I get that goal can be determined via replay and that is the deciding factor, but I can't imagine someone who is watching on a monitor (like anyone at home) is gonna see it better than the guy behind the net in a live setting.

I'm not one of these nostaglia sympathizers, I just think it screws people that don't have a perfect sight line to realize it's gone in the moment it actually does.

Wonder how the horn-blowers will work w/o the light too.

I've heard them discuss this on XM and how the goal judge is basically worthless in deciding goals, but sometimes I think the talking heads forget what it's like to sit in some corner of an arena and get blocked by people, players and w/o a TV monitor connected to their spot in the press box.

Maybe I'm mistaken about how quickly the light can be lit. I just think about certain goals and how the immediate light brought the house to their feet instantly. If someone was watching on a monitor for the Devils Game 2, 3 seconds left Staal goal and didn't hit the light immediately, it woulda just been odd I think.

agreed. and while they may not be used often, the fact remains theyve got a phone line and are trained to give a report to the proper authorities on what they saw.
