OTTAWA (CP) - The Ottawa Senators re-signed star defenceman Wade Redden to a multiyear deal Wednesday, avoiding a potential nasty salary arbitration case.
The signing gives Senators fans more assurance that the team's new owner - Canadian billionaire Eugene Melnyk - will allow the GM John Muckler to spend the money necessary to protect the club's top talent. In past years fans worried the team would lose its biggest stars such as Redden, Marian Hossa, Martin Havlat or Daniel Alfredsson as soon as they became free agents, or watch them hold out ahead of training camp, demanding trades.
Melnyk, who has talked about the possibility of a Stanley Cup ``dynasty'' in Ottawa, said last month that the team's payroll would increase depending upon recommendations from Muckler. He indicated the team's payroll could expand from its near $30 million US annual player payroll last season.
The Senators also re-signed backup goalie Martin Prusek on Tuesday and now only have star winger Martin Havlat left to re-sign. Veteran forward Bryan Smolinski was re-signed in June before he could have walked away as an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Redden, 26, was one of the NHL's top defenceman last season, recording 45 points (10-35) and a plus-15 rating while playing over 25 minutes a game. He was fourth in team scoring in the post-season with nine points (1-8).
In seven seasons with Ottawa, the native of Lloydminster, Sask., has recorded 61 goals, 182 assists and 338 penalty minutes in 548 career games. Redden ranks third in the Senators' all-time games played (548), 10th in goals (61), fourth in assists (181), sixth in points (243) and seventh in penalty minutes (338).
He's also tied for second in the Senators' all-time playoffs games played (54), tied for sixth in goals (6), third in assists (17) and third in points (23).
