Man... EA seems to have Massively increased the depth of all their franchise modes. (Tiger's 2004 is the same). EA's suite of sports games in 04 are ALL online (yes, hockey too. wheeeeee), and all have voice-over-broadband! let the smack-talkin commence!

check out ps2.ign.com (http://ps2.ign.com) for the other reviews, as this is mostly about the Dynasty mode.

July 09, 2003 - We saw EA's NHL 2004 just a few weeks ago and gave you the full skinny on the gameplay with our detailed hands-on impressions. The gameplay changes and presentation upgrades certainly wowed us, but EA refused to give up any details on the fully revamped Dynasty Mode. That changed at Camp EA, where beans were spilled. And what pretty beans they were. NHL 2004's Dynasty Mode is a unique, innovative, and impressive step towards the future of sports gaming. Look out Madden, this one just may give you a run for your money.

The first General Manager RPG
Where the new Madden allows gamers to play as the owner of a team, NHL's Dynasty Mode focuses on the life of a GM. Your goal in your 20-year single-team career is to be a good enough General Manager to be inducted into the GM Hall of Fame. To do this, you'll need to earn oodles of experience points by maintaining good attendance, maximizing your team's profit margin, and (of course) winning.

The experience you earn isn't just for achieving Hall of Fame status. Experience points are used to trick out your GM office with new wallpaper, furniture, posters, and numerous other accoutrements -- The best clearly being the large stuffed bear you can situate in the corner of the office. Ah, but if that's all EXP was good for, this wouldn't be any kind of "groundbreaking" franchise mode.

Upgrades
For every 100 experience points you earn, you can purchase one upgrade for your team. Upgrades range from scouting to medical to coaching and include facility upgrades for the locker room, team travel, and gym (among others). Each item has ten upgradeable levels and each upgrade has a specific effect on your team, which is noted on the Upgrade screen.

The choices you make in upgrades (which last throughout the life of your Dynasty) will sometimes greatly affect your team. Your Medical stat affects how quickly players come back from injury. After all, better medical facilities and staff make it easier to heal a player. A good Marketing stat will increase attendance and better Team Travel will benefit morale (which we'll explain in a moment). With no upgrades to your Scouting stat, you won't be able to view a single draftee ranking, meaning your yearly draft will be done blindly. The more levels you upgrade your scouts, the more ratings you'll see come draft day.

Each stat affects morale, attendance, or player attributes. This adds an interesting level of strategy to the Dynasty Mode, because, with 10 stats to choose from, which stats you upgrade first will have a major impact on the strengths and weaknesses of your franchise.

Not only must you worry about your own upgrades, but every team in the league will be earning and spending experience points throughout the year. You can check out any other team's upgrades whenever you want. You must not only contend with your biggest rivals on the ice, but you need to worry about matching their GM moves as well. This should add ample incentive to utilize every aspect of your franchise options and actually think like a GM.

Don't get me down
Okay, so you've got to sweat the details of being a GM, but what about player management? As GM, your decisions (including hiring and firing coaches) affect player and team morale. Low morale lowers a player's abilities during a game. Attributes are dynamic and change slightly from game to game. Health, fatigue, and morale all affect a player's attributes. How do you keep morale up? Winning (duh), getting a player sufficient time on the ice, signing good players, and maintaining high attendance.

The old practice of signing free agents and immediately trading them away for draft picks won't work anymore. That's because players take notice when other players are signed and immediately sent packing. It bums 'em out. A similar dilemma comes with star players. Big time players demand lots of ice time. If you load your team with nothing but top-notch players, some of them will start playing like wooden men on the ice, because the lack of play time will lower their morale and therefore lower their attributes. Time management suddenly becomes important even when you are playing shortened periods.

Practice makes for perfection
It's not all about keeping players from being pouty. In fact, much of your Dynasty Mode daily duties (aside from playing the games) involve setting up practice time. You won't actually play the practices, but you can assign practice time for any off days. You can choose from: Day off, short, medium, or long practice. Each has a statistical affect on your player attributes for upcoming games. A long practice may increase stats for the next game by two or three points, but will also lower their endurance by eight or nine points. The upgrades you purchase and your practice time management directly affects a player's overall attribute improvement at the end of the season.
At the start of your Dynasty, your facilities are sub-standard and your players therefore will play below their abilities. Purchasing upgrades and managing your personnel leads players to play above their ability level. And you thought we were lying when we said this was one impressive franchise mode!

Make money, make money, make...
Let's not kid ourselves. While every team wants to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup, the NHL is a business. Your team needs to make money in order to survive, sign free agents, and improve facilities.

NHL 2004 gives gamers full control over ticket prices and even playoff prices. With real player salaries included this year (using dollar amounts and not some obscure point system), virtual GM's must manage their profit margins. Get people in the seats, paying premium prices while keeping your player salaries at a reasonable level? Sure... should be easy.

To assist in both attendance and income, any player with a 90 or greater overall rating is considered a Prestige Player. Prestige Player's are the Roy's and Gretzky's who get people into the seats, even when the team's not doing so great. Of course, all Prestige Players expect plenty of ice time, meaning you run the risk of ruining morale by stacking your Dynasty full of the absolute highest talent.

EA was even bright enough to include TV contracts into the financial equation. At the start of the second season in your Dynasty, you'll sign a TV contract based on your first year performance and attendance. This contract will change over the years depending on your Dynasty's success.

Games reflect your Dynasty experience
Lastly, let's talk about how all of these things affect your experience on the ice. In just about every other sports game ever made, the choices you make as a GM merely affect the players you have on your team. However, in NHL 2004 your work as a GM has a clear affect that can be seen and heard in the game.

If your team isn't drawing any people, the stands will be half-empty, the cheers barely audible. The announcers will even make team-specific comments. They'll drop hints, like suggesting that Federov looks like he wants more time on the ice or mention that, while Selanne is hurt, he should be back on the ice soon. The Dynasty mode (and the choices you make in the menus) are now, finally being brought onto the ice as well.

Outlook
NHL 2004's Dynasty Mode looks awesome. Though we really need a chance to hunker down and run NHL 2004 through the paces, if things come anywhere close to our expectations, it will raise the bar for sports franchise modes. Though the ideas may seem almost too big to be managed, the interface is very simple. This is really what sports gamer's have asked for all along -- A franchise mode that actually matters.

Sounds awesome, I'll have to check it out. I've got PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube but always buy the game on XBOX if it's on all three platforms. I love NHL 2002 but didn't like some of the changes made to 2003 and picked up NHL 2K3 for XBOX instead which I loved (the online voice support was wonderful!). I'll definitely check out NHL 2004 and see if it gets my money this year. From the looks of the newly added features I think it will. I just wish some sports game put a little thought into the commentating and celebration after a team wins the cup though! It couldn't take too long to just program some nifty stuff... With NHL 2K3, all I got was seeing the Canes' number one line carry the cup around accompanied by the commentating of "Ooo, that game was a squeaker, but they'll take the win. That win gets them one step closer....to Lord Stanley's Cup". Ummmm...I just won the damn thing. At least say something.

I'm definitely looking forward to a new NHL Hitz game as well. I have logged 842 games played on the XBOX version of NHL Hitz 2003 and hear that 2004 will have online support. I can only image how much fun that will be...

Heatley on the cover of EA Sports game
Canadian Press
8/20/2003

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (CP) - Atlanta Thrashers star winger Dany Heatley will be featured on the cover of EA Sports NHL 2004 video game.

The 22-year-old from Calgary follows Flames star Jarome Iginla, who was the cover boy for NHL 2003.

``I'm thrilled to be working with EA on NHL 2004,'' Heatley said in a statement, adding being a cover athlete for an EA Sports game ``is quickly becoming one of the biggest honours in sports today.''

NHL 2004 is the 12th version of the EA NHL hockey franchise, and is being developed by EA Canada's Vancouver studio.

The game will be available in September on PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and PC.

Toronto Raptors star Vince Carter will be on the cover of EA's NBA 2004 game.

Wow...that sounds awesome. Finally...a salary cap. No more having an all-star roster on the 'Canes... :spin:

ugh. I wish they didn't release nhl and madden so closely. add to that beta testing for eqoa expansion (til end of sept probably), and the final release of expansion in november.

if only I could play games for money... lol.
there's just not enough time.

I gotta echo the sentiments of the close release date of madden and NHL. Madden should be 2 weeks earlier and NHL 2 weeks later...I just bought Madden last week, and I have a feeling its gonna get dusty really quick when NHL 2004 comes out...

NHL 2004, there goes my social life!! Looks too good.

Well I loved EA NHL 02. It is although alittle to arcadeic now for me. The Debacle of EA NHL 03 isn't worth mentioning. They will have to change alot of things for me to buy it. Fighting was terrible, camera views sucked, commentating was the same as 02, glass broke 3-4 times a game the zoom in modes really weren't adding anything for me need I go on? Although the Dynasty mode sounds pretty cool for 04.

I took 03 back after about 2 days, and got NHL 2k3. I loved this game from the get go! My only complaint is that some of the players retire to early and the fighting really sucks as well not to mention dang near impossible to win. I expect 2k4 or whatever it will be called (segas changing their names on some of the sports games) to be very good. I've been reading about it, then fighting is supposed to be much improved. Graphics are supposed to be better, and the game play is supposed to be basically the same with a few improvements.

The only thing is that the Carolina Hurricanes will probaly be a below average team on all the 04 games because of our terrible season last summer.

Did you read the article by an EA Dev about 04? You can probably still find it on ps2.ign.com. good read. the short of it was, they knew they were letting the game get away from them. 04 was time to go back to basics. decide what you want to do, then revolve around the ABC (3 button, old school) game. like I said, good read.

as for hockey games not having a decent fighting element. can't remember the last time I had fighting on in a hockey game. man, boxing (for video games) is hard enough to get right.... what makes you think hockey will have anything even as good as a boxing engine? not likely.

last time I had serious fun fighting in hockey was Blades of Steel.
so, I could care less. fighting = off is one of the first options I hit.

I can't wait for 04. gonna be a blast :)

Ah now your bringing back memories. I rember wearing out controlers playing blades of steel!

I loved that the loser of the fight went to the box not both guys! I wish it were that way in real hockey

Fighting was terrible,
Don't like rock'em-sock'em robots? :) They say it will be better now...)
commentating was the same as 02
Entertainment-based commentating is gone for 04
This info is from an interview I saw a few weeks ago about the PC version...but for the life of me I can't find it again...

I've had it on pre-order from ebgames.com for a while and have to agree -- this one looks good.

But some of the vehemence toward NHL 2003 is surprising considering how much I enjoyed the game. What was so wrong with it that everybody hated? The manual deke with the C-stick was a great new feature, and it doesn't hurt that O'Neill, Cole and Vasicek are freakin' awesome in that game, either. I hope that the poor team showing last season doesn't hurt the 'player ratings' in NHL 2004... and I'm curious to see who EA has making the roster :D

The canes would be the ONLY reason I'd buy 03... and I still chose not to.

why? I've given EASports hundreds and hundreds of dollars over the years for games. 03 was nothing more than a token roster update, imvho.

when so many of us have been waiting on online play (which they could've done last year), they basically just slapped together a game that was almost identical to 02, and expected all of us monkeys to run out and drop $50 on it. PLEASE. Not me. I LOVE the NHL line from EA. always have. But, I'm not going to buy it just because it's got updated rosters.

This year, they'll get my money.... they deserve it.

I suggest you try out ESPN NHL Hockey (2k4) from Sega. It's an improvement from NHL 2k3 (was that even possible?!?), like adding a SKILLS COMPETITION, taking out the "S" Move, making the goalies a little eaiser to score on, etc. Just check out some game websites, and most of them can't wait for ESPN. You won't regret picking it up. :D

Did I mention historical teams....
A mini rink....
Pond hockey...

That sounds great canefan...here's to hoping that they make it for PC in the future. I'd love to be able to play with historic teams, etc. The EA series really lacks stuff like that...

I wouldn't hold your breath. I'm sure a lot of people would like for the game to come to PC, but I think Sega is focusing on XBOX and PS2 right now. BTW, here is an interview (http://www.espnhockey.net) (Click on Interview) that Thunderpuck had with Sega/VC/Kush.

Anyone who isn't stuck at work today run out and snag this yet?

I'm verrrry curious.

If we don't have volleyball tonight (depends on weather) I'll stop and grab it. But if we play, they'll be closed by the time I get done, and it'll have to wait until tomorrow.

*Edit* --- hmm... seems like today is the ship date. two of my local stores said available tomorrow. bah.

Yep, today is the ship date. Sometimes Target will put games out a day early though.

I love my ESPN 2k4, but the only thing bad is that there is not a good camera angle to play with. They are either too close or too far away. They took out last years great zoon mode on the ice cam. BOOO!!

I was thinking about getting this too, but I think that I will get hitz.

I got 2004 today and I love it, Dynasty is awesome and they have improved alot of aspects I hated from 2003. No Staal, but they have Bayda, Kurka, Defauw, Heerema, Ziggy and a few others. So far I am impressed.

The EA Bio feature is pretty cool. I've been playing Madden 04 for a few weeks (57 games according to my bio), and as soon as I logged onto NHL, I had a couple of features unlocked because of my madden experience. pretty nice :)

Dynasty mode is interesting. No matter what team you pick, all of your facility and staffing ratings are very poor. You have to build them up by gaining experience points... then you can upgrade stuff.

I never bought 2003, so this game is a fair bit different than 2002. It's going to take a little time getting used to using the right stick for big checks, manual dekes, manual poke checks...
but I do really like how it works. By moving the stick right, then left (with the puck), if you have a good player carrying... you can pull off a very nice inside-out move, and quite often free yourself for a shot.

I think they increased the difficulty of the game a bit from past years, which is what most of us EA'ers have been screaming for for awhile. Well, that and online play. And... we got both.
I'm pretty damn happy. :)

Brendl is pretty good in this game. Not too sluggish, and has a few goals in a few games. I play him with Jeff and Ron a lot. (also Bayda sometimes)
2nd line is Cole, Brindy, Vrbata
3rd line is Jaro, Joe, rotating spot-- Kurka/Brendl/Bayda
4th line is K Adams, Murray, Jesse/DeFauw

I haven't played C Adams much, nor JD at all. CA could pickup some time on the 4th, when I don't need a bruiser in. Joey T isn't as good in the game as Jesse is- though I've fought with neither.

I've dropped the gloves a few times, mainly with Markov. Fighting is better in this than most hockey games. I almost always turn it off, because it breaks the flow of the game when play just stops for a fight. But in this, you have to accept the fight. I like that a lot.

I was a little bummed not to see Staal... maybe I'll just create him and pick him up. lol

beat NJ on our opening night... but for some reason Florida has had my #. ;)

UPS brought this baby home today. EBGames.com shipped it on Monday. First reaction: this is by far the most realistic NHL game I've played. Passing, checking, deking, everything plays so fine and the animations are fantastic -- especially on the checks!

Erik Cole is a BAD MAN in this game -- charging to the net, open-ice checks, he is a one-man wrecking crew. I played 1 game so far, (Dynasty Mode, Medium difficulty) drawing 4-4 in the season opener at Florida. I went down 3-1 as I struggled to learn the new controls, but Cole charges to the rescue.

I have the GameCube version, and I am very very thrilled with the way the first game went. The only things I wish were changed are (a) more current rosters (Harold Drukken still on the team?), (b) Bob Boughner is very underrated (#7 on the Canes D?), and (c) more rookies, NHLPA status be damned.

In short, this only whets my appetite even further for tomorrow night's preseason home opener. I can't wait.

"LET'S GO CANES!".

NHL 2003 had the manual dekes with the right analog -- it was great, but the control is even better in NHL 2004.

Florida is pretty good in this game for one reason -- Jay Bouwmeester is very very highly rated in this game.

At least on the GameCube version of NHL 2004, the "create a player" has a list of numbered faces. Which "face" are you guys choosing for Staal? There are a lot of chocies (50+) and a couple looked like they might be an okay fit.
