View Full Version : Pre-Season Game Thread..... @ Columbus, 9/27/07

Let's see.... pre-season record, so far isn't too shabby: 2-1-1
Pre-season team leaders:
4 pts: Staal (4 A)
3 pts: Williams (3 G), Cole (3 G), and Stillman (3 A)
So, the boys are off to Columbus -- named after one of the discoverers of the New World, Christopher Columbus. But... did you know his real name is actually Cristobal Colon? We should all be glad his real name wasn't Cristobal Anus!
There's your trivia for the day.

Well I know I haven't kept up on the various (and seemingly infinite) possibilities that the games are brought to us, but last night - at least during the 1st period, I didn't find the game. SoCal - I know you didn't try 99.9 last night, were you able to find it on XM?

nccanes, I know this question was directed to SoCal  but XM has been doing one preseason game a night I think. I think the Canes get lucky tomorrow (or maybe it's Friday  ) and get "that" game on XM. Now SoCal am I right? :D

From the N/O
* Winger Ray Whitney (groin) did not practice with the team Wednesday but worked out and skated individually following the Canes' team practice. Whitney and fellow veterans Rod Brind'Amour, Glen Wesley and Bret Hedican were not scheduled to make the road trip to Columbus for tonight's preseason game.
Guess at least one of the D kids gets another game.

G-Vegas - I see the game listed at nhl.tv now.
It also shows 7:30 as the game time, but the Canes and Jackets sites say 7pm.

So at the end of the first, 0-0. Us 7 Shots on Goal to their 6. And we're 0 for 4 on Power Plays, CBJ has taken all the penalties so far.
Chuck says he'll try to find some highlights to replay during the intermission.
And still no sign of a video on NHL.tv.

I remember someone mentioning Grahame and 'sprawling' earlier in the week. So I'm in the car Tuesday night and turn on the Caps game. Within the first two minutes of listening, Cam made a "sprawling" save. ;)

Ok, things are far better than when I got in my car to drive home from dinner with a friend. (5 minutes left in the first and a bazillion PP's and no shots) I agree with whoever said the description of Staal is far better than any we've heard. I'm listening to the Jackets play by play team on XM - (that George Matthews is an excitable sort, he's killing me) and they have fawned on the Canes alot.
Stillman sounds like Stillman of old too. So there are some very positive things going on, except my hot headed favorite D-Man Tim Gleason takes a penalty.
Now I'm flashing back to last preseason when we played CLB- didn't that Ole Kristoff-Tolefson (sp) dude get into it with someone a few times in the preseason? I'm thinking someone threw down with him.
OMG the CLB announcer is freakin' on all this activity. "GRAHAM a DIVING save- a sprawling save!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" LMAO.

Sounds like it was a good game. I missed it as well. :(
Good for Grahame, especially considering how many people were ready to ship him out last week...
the one game Stillman does something we don't get to see it! can anybody in Columbus confirm it was Stillman!?!
and john grahame dont get me started! this guy is so inconsistent, one night he has a bad game and then comes back with a shut out!?! you just dont know what you're getting with this guy...

I think there are very few goalies that are truly consistent in the NHL. It's a highly scrutinized position that gets over-analyzed way too often.
Cam's form is so textbook and controlled, he makes the specator feel more relaxed and confident. That doesn't always result in wins and great performances though (hopefully it will this year). Personally I like to watch Grahame play (not that I prefer him to play) because I find it kind of fun to watch, and I definitely appreciate his puck handling.
Have any of us even seen Grahame much yet? I mean - actually seen him in person? He played 20 minutes of the first preseason game - the game that was held after 2 days of training camp. He lost in N'ville in a game that none of us saw. He posted a shutout tonight.
So how on earth can you judge him after seeing him (presuming you went on 9/16) play for 20 minutes?
I was just being sarcastic, I think Grahame actually should have been given the nod more last season but I'm hoping that Cam will be forged by the flames he was thrown into last year so many times when he was struggling. I think we'll see good things from both net minders this season. Having said that, I think Leighton shows some promise and could be Cam's backup next year depending on how Grahame plays this one - since it's a contract year for him. Does anybody know if Leighton cleared waivers? How long does he have?
nccanes
09-28-2007, 05:41 AM
He did clear waivers.
(and sorry for misinterpreting your post! :) )
livinthedream
09-28-2007, 07:54 AM
Twas good to hear that Leighton cleared waivers.
Now I'm no hockey expert (I know that comes as a big shock to everyone  ), and I love Cam Ward and his composure, but for me, watching Grahame is exciting and scary all at the same time. I like that he's aggressive with the puck, and in the Caps game he made some really great outlet passes which is a good thing if he helps us move the puck up the ice and generate scoring changes. But at the same time he scares the bejesus out of me when he's not in position and has to sprawl to make a save or gets burned. He's definitely a risk-taker, I just hope he's consistently taking the right risks for us this season!

He did clear waivers.
To me, the bigger concern is going to be if we need to recall him. If we lost him now, oh well, move on. But if we have to recall him and he gets taken, then a) we're in trouble since presumably we needed him here due to injury and b) the Canes just got stuck paying half his salary for him to play for someone else.
That is a blast from the past. That guy had the ugliest pads too.

Injury recalls are not subject to waivers, IIRC. Although I could be wrong:

I believe it's emergency recalls that are not subject. Now as to what officially constitutes an emergency recall, I don't recall. ;)
But yeah, maybe we're covered if it really is due to injury. That would make sense.

Well I tried to search through the CBA, but it's just too much lawyer-speak for me.
However, it seems an emergency recall is one in which a team needs a player in order to maintain 2 goalies, 6 defenseman and 12 forwards. And evidence of injury or illness must be provided. But I could find no explicit wording that an emergency recall was waiver exempt (but admit it could easily be in there somewhere).
